LARNED - Mary Louella Wratil, 103, passed away Feb. 5, at Diversicare of Larned. Born Oct. 17, 1910, in Pawnee County, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Lena Unruh. On Oct. 30, 1931, she married Theodore Wratil in Pawnee County. He passed away Oct. 30, 1970. A lifetime area resident, she was a homemaker.

LARNED - Albert George ( A.G.) Crane, 82, passed away Feb. 2, at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born Oct. 8, 1931, in Larned, he was the son of Edgar H. and Agnes Stockwell Crane. On May 27, 1949, he married Gloria Umberger in Syracuse. She survives. A lifetime area resident of Larned, he was a farmer.
CAMERON, Mo. - Genola McCarter, 90, a long-time resident of Great Bend, passed away on Jan. 31 at the Missouri Veterans' Home in Cameron, Mo. Born July 2, 1923, in La Crosse, she was the daughter of David Nelson and Esther (Searl) Sankey. After graduating high school in La Crosse, she attended Grace Hospital Nursing School in Hutchinson. STERLING - Joe R. Clayton Sr., 84, died Jan. 30 at Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. He was born Sept. 20, 1929, at Gatewood, Mo., the son of John and Myrtle Cleo Brown Clayton. He married Maryann Marmul on Sept. 20, 1954, in Arkansas. A resident of Sterling for 60 years, he was a road maintenance operator for Atlanta Township and most recently Victoria Township in Rice County.

CYPRESS, Texas - Kenneth D. Unruh, 82, died Jan. 27, 2014 at Kindred Hospital Northwest in Houston, Texas. Born Jan. 17, 1932, in Larned, he was the son of Ernest W. "Pete" and Gladys (White) Unruh. On Nov. 24, 1957 he married Darlene M. Lofland in Great Bend. He graduated from Radium High School, attended Kansas State University, and completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Fort Hays State University. RUSSELL - Vernon Dean Flegler, 83, died Jan. 27, at the Hays Medical Center. Born Jan. 24, 1931 in rural Russell County, he was the son of Jacob, Jr. and Hannah (Deines) Flegler. He grew up south of Russell near the Smoky Hill River and attended local country schools.
Don Whelan, 94, died Jan. 27 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Oct. 19, 1919 in Sharon, he was the son of Joe and Florence (McKeever) Whelan. In 1938 he graduated from Great Bend High School. In June 1947, he married Phyllis Kay Niswonger in Great Bend. She died on Feb. 10, 2008. A lifetime resident of Great Bend he was Vice-President of the First National Bank, was a partner in the JoDonCee Skating Rink, and was involved in ranching in Barber County.
HAYS - Lois Charlene Herrman, 64, formerly of Hays, died Jan. 26, at the Hays Medical Center. Born Aug. 28, 1949, in Russell, she was the daughter of Albert E. and Doris A. (Ochs) Karst. In 1967, she graduated from Plainville High School. She received her nurses aid and LPN degrees from Colby Community College, and her RN degree from Barton County Community College. CHICKAMUGA, Ga. - Ella Louisa Bridgman Going, 83, passed away Jan. 24th. Born in Hutchinson, she was the daughter of Otis and Iva Redhair Bridgman. A longtime resident of Great Bend, until 2005 when she moved to Chickmauga, Ga., she was a former employee of Woolworth's and Great Bend High School. She enjoyed fellowship with her friends at The Chickamauga Senior Center.
HUDSON - Juanita S. Mawhirter, 90, died Jan. 25 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born in rural Stafford County on June 15, 1923 to Henry and Anna Siefkes. She was a lifetime Hudson area resident and member of Trinity Community Church, Hudson. She also owned the liquor store in Hudson for many years. ALBERT - Celeste Catherine (Mermis) Vonfeldt, 89, died Jan. 23, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 21, 1924, in Walker, she was the daughter of John A. and Anna (Kisner) Mermis. On Jan. 8, 1946, she married Raymond J. Vonfeldt in Walker. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1997. A long time Albert resident, she was a homemaker. She enjoyed making quilts and was a reading grandma at Albert Elementary School.
CLAFLIN - Mary Hoffman, 99, died Jan. 24, at Clara Barton Hospital Hoisington. Born Dec. 7, 1914, in Dubuque, she was the daughter of Venzel and Mary (Kvapil) Blazek. A lifelong area resident, she attended the Dubuque schools through the eighth grade. She worked as a cook for the Dubuque schools and later worked for Buehler's Grocery Store in Claflin. On May 12, 1936, she married John Hoffman in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on Oct. 24, 1978. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, crocheting, and spending time with her family.
CONCORDIA - Phyllis A. Winter, 74, died March 5 at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia. Born on Nov. 20, 1939, in Concordia, she was the daughter of James and Mary (Cote) Breen. She graduated from Notre Dame Catholic High School. On Feb. 24, 1958, she married Willis "Willie" D. Winter. She was a secretary/bookkeeper for Palmquist Drug Store, Associate Financial and various other businesses.
PAWNEE ROCK - Norma Pauline Kasselman, 96, passed away March 5 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born July 17, 1917, in Columbus, she was the daughter of Emma (LeCleff) and James Argyle. She was a lifetime resident of Pawnee Rock. On June 5, 1937, she married Emmett "Johnny" Kasselman in Ellinwood. He preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2001.
ELLINWOOD - Bernice Ida Koch, 99, died March 6 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. She was born March 16, 1914, at Alden, the daughter of Claud E. and Emma Louise (Reiser) Parker. She graduated from Alden High School in 1932. On March 10, 1935, she married Harry Koch at Alden, he preceded her in death. A life-long resident of Barton and Rice counties, she was a retired secretary and agent with Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. as well as a homemaker.

LINCOLN, Neb. - Kenneth E. Kaiser, 91, passed away Jan. 13, in Crete, Neb. He was born Nov. 21, 1922 in Shaffer, the son of John and Rachel (Hanhardt) Kaiser.
HOISINGTON -Merle Steiner, 81, of Hoisington died Monday, March 3 at Golden Living Center in Wakefield. He was born Nov. 14, 1932 at Odin, the son of Louis and Lenora (Ummel) Steiner.
LARNED - Barbara J. Erway, 70, died March 2, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born April 5, 1943, in Sumiton, Ala., she was the daughter of Houston and Lilly Fortenberry Greathouse. Moving from Alabama in 1956, she was a longtime area resident of Larned and a Registered Nurse at Larned State Hospital. On June 13, 1962, she married Leonard L. Erway in Larned. He survives. She loved spoiling her grandchildren, going on camping trips and traveling.
LINCOLN - James William Grandy, 63, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully on March 1, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina. He was born Dec. 29, 1950, in Great Bend, the son of the late Iva Mae (Vesper) and Harold Lee Grandy.
Barb Schumacher, 74, died Feb. 27 at the Hays Medical Center. Born Jan. 8, 1940, in Ness City, she was the daughter of Charles W. and Pearlann (Reynolds) Petersilie. On Dec. 5, 1981, she married Ken Schumacher in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1957, coming from Bazine, she was co-owner and operator of Kansas Door, worked in several flower shops, was an administrative secretary at Fuller Brush and was an Avon representative for 20 years. She enjoyed fishing, water sports and traveling, especially, wintering in Texas. Her true love was spending time with her grandchildren.
Neuell G. Nicolet, 91, formerly of Great Bend, passed away Feb. 27 in Augusta. Born Oct. 2, 1922, in Great Bend, he was the son of the late Ed and Inez (Gaunt) Nicolet. In 1941, he graduated from Great Bend High School. He was a retired farmer.
John E. Taylor, 85, died Feb. 27 at Great Bend Regional Hospital.
Orval E. Weeks, 86, died Feb. 26 at Sterling House in Great Bend. Born May 16, 1927, in Russell County, he was the son of Marion B. and Edith I. (Ross) Weeks. On March 20, 1949 Orval married Virginia L. Campbell in Hoisington. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2005.
