PHOENIX, Ariz. - Julie Ann Westhoff, 47, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away Dec. 26, 2013 in Phoenix, Ariz. Julie was born on Oct. 16, 1966, in Hays, the daughter of Earl and Carolyn Westhoff. She lived and worked in Phoenix, Ariz.
PITTSBURG - Patricia Catherine Wheat, 82, formerly of Great Bend and Pittsburg, passed away Jan. 3, 2014 at Via Christ Hospital in Pittsburg.
GENESEO - Franklin Dean Gustus, 80, died Jan. 7 at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home, Little River. He was born July 17, 1933 at Geneseo, the son of Cyril and Olive Roby Gustus. He was a lifetime Geneseo resident.
MCKINNEY, Texas - Rachael (Jarmer) Green, 41, of McKinney, Texas, passed away on Dec. 29, 2013 at McKinney, Texas.
ELLINWOOD - Cheryl L. Whiting, 52, died Jan. 5 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born Feb. 6, 1961, she was the daughter of Robert C. and Janice (Luft) Brandt. On Nov. 11, 1978, she married Terry C. Whiting in Great Bend. He died Sept. 5, 2010. A resident of Ellinwood since 1978, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker.
LARNED – Lawrence Schneck Jr., 83, died Jan. 3, in Wichita. Born Oct. 7, 1930, in Larned, he was the son of Lawrence I. and Lydia Schultz Schneck. On Aug. 18, 1949, he married Janice H. Younkin. She predeceased him in 2012. He was a farmer for more than 40 years.
HAYS - Vickie J. Cole, 67, passed away Jan. 2, at Hays Medical Center. Born May 12, 1946, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Donald A. and Dorothy (Rinker) Bowsher Sr. On July 3, 1966, she married Tom O. Cole in Great Bend.
ANDOVER - Ernest "E.B."Shawver II, 88, loving husband and father, World War II Army veteran, rancher, oilman, philanthropist and conservationist, passed away on Jan. 1 at his home. Born on May 6, 1925, in Wichita, he was the son of Ernest Blaine and Stella Mae (Barr) Shawver. E.B. married Bettie (Cocking) Cordes in 1946 and they were later divorced. He married Virginia (Ferrell) Oetken on June 13, 1986 in Butler County.
HOISINGTON - David Paul "Pete" Barnard, 79, died Jan. 4, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born April 15, 1934, at Wayne County, Ill., he was the son of Ralph and Ruth (Peddicord) Barnard. On Oct. 13, 1956, he married Joyce Hosselton at Johnsonville, Ill. A Barton County resident since 1963, coming from Oklahoma, he was employed for over forty years in the oil industry until his retirement. He served on the city council in Hoisington and Susank, and drove the trolley in Hoisington. HOISINGTON - Helen L. Jonas, 81, died Jan. 5, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born Feb. 29, 1932, in Pawnee, Okla., she was the daughter of Cecil Cleeve and Elsie Mae ( Feaster) Richmond. A lifelong Hoisington resident, she graduated from Hoisington High School and attended Salt City Business College in Hutchinson. She was a school bus driver for the Hoisington Public Schools for 13 years and later worked at the Great Bend Senior Center until her retirement. She enjoyed making wedding cakes, sewing, gardening, and cooking.
Michael Anthony Halseth, 51, died Jan. 3 at his home in Great Bend. Born April 29, 1962, at Topeka, he was the son of Henry "Hank" and Jane (Wilson) Halseth. On May 12, 2006, he married Utonia Bowman in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 2002, coming from Meriden, he was a school district custodian and worked in construction.
Douglas Lorson, 55, died Jan. 3 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born April 9, 1958, at Abilene, he was the son of James Francis and Inez Esther (Strutt) Lorson. A Great Bend resident since 1983, coming from Hays, he was a sous chef for Five Oaks Club and various restaurants.
COLBY - Phillip Eugene Powell, 61, died on Jan. 1 in Colby. He was born on March 1, 1952, at Flagler, Colo. Bateman Funeral Home in Goodland is in charge of arrangements.
CONCORDIA - Phyllis A. Winter, 74, died March 5 at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia. Born on Nov. 20, 1939, in Concordia, she was the daughter of James and Mary (Cote) Breen. She graduated from Notre Dame Catholic High School. On Feb. 24, 1958, she married Willis "Willie" D. Winter. She was a secretary/bookkeeper for Palmquist Drug Store, Associate Financial and various other businesses.
PAWNEE ROCK - Norma Pauline Kasselman, 96, passed away March 5 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born July 17, 1917, in Columbus, she was the daughter of Emma (LeCleff) and James Argyle. She was a lifetime resident of Pawnee Rock. On June 5, 1937, she married Emmett "Johnny" Kasselman in Ellinwood. He preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2001.
ELLINWOOD - Bernice Ida Koch, 99, died March 6 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. She was born March 16, 1914, at Alden, the daughter of Claud E. and Emma Louise (Reiser) Parker. She graduated from Alden High School in 1932. On March 10, 1935, she married Harry Koch at Alden, he preceded her in death. A life-long resident of Barton and Rice counties, she was a retired secretary and agent with Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. as well as a homemaker.

WILSON - Michael Lee Stevenson, 66, died March 3 at his home in Wilson. He was born Aug. 11, 1947 in Great Bend to Harold and Helen (Read) Stevenson.
LINCOLN, Neb. - Kenneth E. Kaiser, 91, passed away Jan. 13, in Crete, Neb. He was born Nov. 21, 1922 in Shaffer, the son of John and Rachel (Hanhardt) Kaiser.
HOISINGTON -Merle Steiner, 81, of Hoisington died Monday, March 3 at Golden Living Center in Wakefield. He was born Nov. 14, 1932 at Odin, the son of Louis and Lenora (Ummel) Steiner.
LARNED - Barbara J. Erway, 70, died March 2, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born April 5, 1943, in Sumiton, Ala., she was the daughter of Houston and Lilly Fortenberry Greathouse. Moving from Alabama in 1956, she was a longtime area resident of Larned and a Registered Nurse at Larned State Hospital. On June 13, 1962, she married Leonard L. Erway in Larned. He survives. She loved spoiling her grandchildren, going on camping trips and traveling.
LINCOLN - James William Grandy, 63, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully on March 1, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina. He was born Dec. 29, 1950, in Great Bend, the son of the late Iva Mae (Vesper) and Harold Lee Grandy.
Barb Schumacher, 74, died Feb. 27 at the Hays Medical Center. Born Jan. 8, 1940, in Ness City, she was the daughter of Charles W. and Pearlann (Reynolds) Petersilie. On Dec. 5, 1981, she married Ken Schumacher in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1957, coming from Bazine, she was co-owner and operator of Kansas Door, worked in several flower shops, was an administrative secretary at Fuller Brush and was an Avon representative for 20 years. She enjoyed fishing, water sports and traveling, especially, wintering in Texas. Her true love was spending time with her grandchildren.
Neuell G. Nicolet, 91, formerly of Great Bend, passed away Feb. 27 in Augusta. Born Oct. 2, 1922, in Great Bend, he was the son of the late Ed and Inez (Gaunt) Nicolet. In 1941, he graduated from Great Bend High School. He was a retired farmer.
John E. Taylor, 85, died Feb. 27 at Great Bend Regional Hospital.
Orval E. Weeks, 86, died Feb. 26 at Sterling House in Great Bend. Born May 16, 1927, in Russell County, he was the son of Marion B. and Edith I. (Ross) Weeks. On March 20, 1949 Orval married Virginia L. Campbell in Hoisington. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2005.
