SALINA - David C. Gardiner, 54, died Sept. 20. Born Jan. 11, 1960, in Larned, he was the son of Gordon A. and Mary Anne (McConahay) Gardiner. In 1978, he graduated from Salina High School South. He joined the Army after he graduated from high school and was stationed in Europe for many years as a food inspector for the Army. He graduated from K-State with a degree in food science. He worked at the Great Bend Packing plant in Great Bend before retiring in Salina.
Carolyn A. Sheets, 79, died Sept. 15 at her home in Great Bend. Born Oct. 3, 1934, in rural Rose Hill, she was the daughter of Earl and Esther (Hall) Showalter. She married Gerald Skeels. On Nov. 9, 1979, she married Donald Eugene "Gene" Sheets in Dighton. He died July 25, 2012. A Great Bend resident since 1963, she was an office manager for Great Bend Appliance for 13 years and was a former secretary at Security State Bank and First National Bank. She enjoyed her family and friends and playing golf.
Peggy Lynn Crowe, 58, died Sept. 16 at her home in Great Bend. Born May 4, 1956, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Johnnie Douglas and Marie (Griffith) Crowe. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was an occupational therapist at Clara Barton Hospital.
Lester Leo Achatz, 65, died Sept. 14 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born Oct. 21, 1948, in Great Bend, he was the son of Milton and Bertha (Birzer) Achatz. On Dec. 27, 2011, he married Kimm M. Lewis in Great Bend. He grew up in Great Bend and lived in Virginia before moving back to Great Bend. He was employed by H-2 Trucking.
ALBERT - Virginia Marie (Amerine) Bird, 91, gently journeyed from this world to a new beginning on Sept. 14th. Though she was a life-long resident of Barton County, she spent the final years of her life with her daughter providing precious companionship in Wichita and then Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Ellsworth. Virginia is survived by her daughter, Lisa Riedel, and her husband, Bert, of Ellsworth and their son, Bret, of Kansas City; her son, Lynn Bird, and his wife, Pat, of Broomfield, Colo.; their children, Joshua Bird, and his wife, Alison Cashman and their daughter, Josie; Stefanie Bird Stafford and ...
