HUMBOLDT - Anna Mae "Anne" Tinkler of Humboldt, passed away on May 21 at Diversicare of Chanute. She was born Anna Mae Nickey on Dec. 1, 1922, in Haxtun, Colo., the daughter of Carl A. and Agnes Mae (Hulse) Nickey.
LYONS - Maxine Idell Battershell, 95, died May 22 at Good Samaritan Center, Lyons. She was born Jan. 29, 1919, at Larned, to the Rev. Thomas F. and Lelia Goforth Swanson. She graduated from Stafford High School, and from Beauty College in Hutchinson in 1939. She married Lee Howard Battershell on Aug. 12, 1943, at Lyons. He died July 17, 1967. A longtime Lyons resident, formerly of Sterling and Erie, she was owner and operator of Maxine's Beauty Shop for over 50 years.
SYLVIA - Carl Marks, 77, died May 22 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was the son of Herb and Nellie Marks and was raised in the Zenith/Stafford community. Carl was a 1954 graduate of Stafford High School and Hutchinson Junior College. He proudly served in the United States Army for three years and went back to the "Oil Patch." On June 8, 1963, he married Jeanette Kueck at Stafford. Carl was an avid hunter and wildlife enthusiast having helped establish Sunflower Mallards and had raised Greater Canada Geese to be released back into the wild for many years.
KATY, Texas - Dixie Lee Stein, 66, died May 20 at her home in Katy, Texas. Born July 25, 1947, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of Eldon Howard and Fern Marie (Folkerts) Harper. Raised on her family's farm in Albert, she graduated from Fort Hays State University. On June 15, 1968, she married Dean LeRoy Stein in Albert. The couple lived in Duncan, Okla., Enid, Okla., and Oklahoma City, Okla.; Springfield, Mo., Paducah, Ky., and Lubbock, Texas, prior to moving to Katy, Texas, in 2013 to be closer to their daughters and grandson.
Gilbert Francis Penka, 66, died May 17, 2014 at his home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 25, 1948, in Great Bend, he was the son of August and Agnes (Rziha) Penka. A resident of Great Bend since 2009, coming from Hoisington, he was a farmer and delivered propane for Mid Continent L.P. Services. He also later was employed by Moeder Oil Company.
MIDLAND, Texas - Monte Dean Jamison, 52, died May 19, 2014 at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas. Born Sept. 20, 1961, in Chickasha, Okla., he was the son of Harold Dean and Carol Jean (Burgess) Jamison. He was employed by the County of Midland, Texas as a Procurement Manager.
WAGNER, S.D. - Gertrude Mae (Stratton) Dressler passed away on May 19, 2014 at her home under hospice care, as a result of a long respiratory illness. She was born Nov. 30, 1930, in Madison, S.D. to Howard and Bernice (Cline) Stratton. In 1941, she moved with her family to Marion, S.D. and graduated Salutatorian in 1949. HOLYROOD - Robert L. Siemsen, 75, passed away May 20 in Lyons. He was born Nov. 14, 1938 in Ellsworth to Henry and Leora (Johansen) Siemsen. A lifetime resident of Ellsworth County, he was raised on a farm in rural Holyrood. Robert attended grade school and high school in Holyrood, graduating in 1956. He was a farmer and stockman and a member of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Holyrood. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy for three years aboard the USS Gunston Hall.
COLLEGEDALE, Tenn. - Barbara Louise Knupp Lucas passed away Wednesday, Jan. 1, at Life Care of Collegedale, Tenn. She was 83 years old. She was born in Larned on Nov. 21, 1930, to E. V. and Irene Hall Knupp. She graduated from Larned High School with the Class of 1948. She married Jon K. "Pete" Lucas in Larned. They lived in Kansas, Maryland, Colorado, Michigan, Tennessee and Louisiana. She was a resident of Slidell, La., for over 30 years before moving to Collegedale, Tenn., in 2010.
LARNED - Troy Lee Fox, 50, died May 18, at Emporia. Born Oct. 29, 1963 at Hastings, Neb., he was the son of Galen and Charolette "Sue" Cambron Fox. He was a Larned resident for 25 years moving from Garden City. He was a Diesel Mechanic for Doonan Truck. He was a member of The Fathers House, Larned.
Blanche Opal Rea, 92, died May 17, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Oct. 30, 1921 in Hoisington, she was the daughter of Charlie "Chase" and Stazie (Novotny) Hejny. On Aug. 22, 1943 she married Kenneth "K.E." Rea in Hoisington. He died on Nov. 14, 1998. A Great Bend resident since 2001, coming from The Ozarks, Mo., she also had resided in Otis; Hoisington; Sweetwater, Texas; Abilene, Texas; Mozambique, South Africa; Libya; North Africa; Denver, Colo.; London, Ky.; Tehran; Iran; and Vincennes, Ind. She was a self-employed cosmetologist. She devoted her life to her children and grandchildren.
