HAYS - Lois Charlene Herrman, 64, formerly of Hays, died Jan. 26, at the Hays Medical Center. Born Aug. 28, 1949, in Russell, she was the daughter of Albert E. and Doris A. (Ochs) Karst. In 1967, she graduated from Plainville High School. She received her nurses aid and LPN degrees from Colby Community College, and her RN degree from Barton County Community College. CHICKAMUGA, Ga. - Ella Louisa Bridgman Going, 83, passed away Jan. 24th. Born in Hutchinson, she was the daughter of Otis and Iva Redhair Bridgman. A longtime resident of Great Bend, until 2005 when she moved to Chickmauga, Ga., she was a former employee of Woolworth's and Great Bend High School. She enjoyed fellowship with her friends at The Chickamauga Senior Center.
HUDSON - Juanita S. Mawhirter, 90, died Jan. 25 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born in rural Stafford County on June 15, 1923 to Henry and Anna Siefkes. She was a lifetime Hudson area resident and member of Trinity Community Church, Hudson. She also owned the liquor store in Hudson for many years. ALBERT - Celeste Catherine (Mermis) Vonfeldt, 89, died Jan. 23, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 21, 1924, in Walker, she was the daughter of John A. and Anna (Kisner) Mermis. On Jan. 8, 1946, she married Raymond J. Vonfeldt in Walker. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1997. A long time Albert resident, she was a homemaker. She enjoyed making quilts and was a reading grandma at Albert Elementary School.
CLAFLIN - Mary Hoffman, 99, died Jan. 24, at Clara Barton Hospital Hoisington. Born Dec. 7, 1914, in Dubuque, she was the daughter of Venzel and Mary (Kvapil) Blazek. A lifelong area resident, she attended the Dubuque schools through the eighth grade. She worked as a cook for the Dubuque schools and later worked for Buehler's Grocery Store in Claflin. On May 12, 1936, she married John Hoffman in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on Oct. 24, 1978. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, crocheting, and spending time with her family.
PRATT - Howard Michael Schnittker (Brother Michael, C.Ss.R.), 76, died Jan. 20, at St. Clement Health Care Center in Liguori, Mo. from an injury sustained in a fall. He was born July 24, 1938, at Pratt the son of Joseph A. and Elsie A. (Glenn) Schnittker.
HAYS - Vickie J. Cole, 67, passed away Jan. 2 at Hays Medical Center. Born May 12, 1946, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Donald A. and Dorothy (Rinker) Bowsher Sr. On July 3, 1966, she married Tom O. Cole in Great Bend.
Marian Weathers, 87, died Jan. 22 at Rehabilitation Center of Independence in Independence, Mo. Born May 20, 1926, in Pawnee Rock, she was the daughter of William J. and Alvena Mary (Koehn) Mull. On June 2, 1946, she married Russell Kenneth Weathers in Great Bend. He died on Aug. 23, 2008. A lifetime resident of Great Bend and Pawnee Rock, moving to Independence, Mo., in 2009 to be closer to family, she was a homemaker.
RUSH CENTER - Helen L. Appel, 83, of rural Rush Center, passed away on Monday morning, Jan. 20, at Hays Medical Center. Born on June 22, 1930, in Hargrave, she was the daughter of Jacob and Mollie (Ickes) Reifschneider. In 1948, she graduated from La Crosse High School. On Nov. 18, 1948, she was united in marriage to Delmer D. "Bud" Appel in La Crosse A homemaker, Helen enjoyed gardening and taking care of her chickens, as well as cooking, baking, and sewing.
LARNED - James Francis Kaeberle, II, 61,died Jan. 19 at Hospice House of Reno County, Hutchinson. Born July 20, 1952 at El Dorado, he was the son of James Francis and Rosalyn Elizabeth (Snyder) Kaeberle.
Helen Lucille Sanders Hazen, 75, died Jan. 18 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 20, 1938 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Clarence and Catherine (Clawson) Heckens. On Sept. 6, 1958 she married Leon F. Sanders in Great Bend. He died on Jan. 3, 1997. She then married Paul D. Hazen on Jan. 19, 2002 in Great Bend, He died on Dec. 20, 2012.
