PAWNEE ROCK - John Leslie Fitzsimmons Jr., 58, died Dec. 23 at his home in rural Pawnee Rock, surrounded by his loving family. Born Sept. 28, 1955 in Kingman, he was the son of John Leslie and Ella Marie (Tetrick) Fitzsimmons. On Dec. 2, 1983 he married Loretta Kay Stetler in Great Bend. A long time rural Pawnee Rock resident, coming from McPherson, he was the quality systems manager for Size Wise Wheelchairs of Kansas in Hays.
Betty F. Shoaff, 84, died Dec. 22 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born May 1, 1929 in Wilson, she was the daughter of Edward and Emma (Chrudimsky) Hanzlicek. On May 22, 1955 she married Samuel C. Shoaff in Wilson. A resident of Great Bend since 1949, coming from Wilson, she was employed by Unified School District 428 Food Service.
NORTON - Marietta Gilmore, 88, died Dec. 21, in Norton. Born Jan. 19, 1925 in Cairo, she was the daughter of Leslie (Judd) L. and Mabel Dale (McGaffin) Fitzsimmons. She attended rural schools and graduated from Pratt High School. She married Richard Leslie Webster. In 1960, she married William Edward Gilmore. He died in 2001. She was a resident of Parkwood Assisted Living, later moving to the Andbe Home in Norton to be closer to her daughter. She was employed at a laundry mat, a chiropractor's office, as a homemaker and as a domestic helper for several elderly Pratt residents.
Christian Wesley Hale "Bean" born 8:05 a.m. Dec. 18 died at 12:15 p.m. on Dec. 18. He was the infant son of Montara Johansen and Clinton Hale. Bean's story began at 19 weeks when medical complications were discovered while he was still in utero. Against the odds this little fighter survived to 34 weeks and was delivered at Children's Mercy in Kansas City, Mo. He lived for a few hours after his birth. Grace Marie Denman, 101, died Dec. 19 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 23, 1912 in Pueblo, Colo., she was the daughter of Charles and Agnes (Krebs) Watkins. She grew up and attended schools in Scott County, where her family moved shortly after she was born. On June 19, 1969, she married Gordon Knox in Reno, Nev. He died on May 12, 1972. Moving to Great Bend in 1989 from San Jose, Calif., she was a retired sales clerk.
GREENWELL SPRINGS, La. - Lisa Burks Strecker, a native of Baton Rouge and a resident of Greenwell Springs, passed away on Dec. 17, 2013 at the age of 55. She was known in the community for breeding and raising boer goats and livestock and being an active East Baton Rouge Parish 4-H club leader. Lisa was an amazing cook, but her true passion was her family. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother who will be missed dearly by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
HOISINGTON - Hazeltene "Babe" (Driscoll) Schremmer died Dec. 19, 2013, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington after a long illness. She was born Nov. 16, 1922, in Dorrance, the daughter of Daniel Joseph Driscoll and Hazel Etta (Sinclair) Driscoll.
ELLINWOOD - Eric "Butch" Muehleisen, 54, died Dec. 19 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Feb. 25, 1959, at Seattle, Wash., the son of Eric E. and Dolores (Selby) Muehleisen. He married Sharon Choitz on March 30, 1979, at Ellsworth. He worked for Golden Belt Printing, Great Bend, as a graphic artist.
HOISINGTON - Eldon Mayford Myers, 92, died Dec. 8, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 6, 1921 at Little River, he was the son of Oscar W. and Grace (Clark) Myers. A lifelong Hoisington resident, he graduated from Hoisington High School. On Sept. 15, 1946 he married Dorothy Tullis in Ellinwood. He later married Ida Neal on March 14, 1974 in Great Bend.
Walter N. "Walt" Fleischmann, 70, longtime Great Bend resident, passed away at his home on Dec. 15 in Great Bend. Born Feb. 27, 1943, in Salina, he was the son of Roland and Esther Mae (Bender) Fleischmann. He attended elementary school in Great Bend, attended high school in Hutchinson, and later lived in Wichita. On April 30, 1966, he was united in marriage to Darlene M. Haberman in Timken.
