OTIS - Richard L. "Monte" Landers, 83, died June 25 at home in Otis. He was born March 12, 1931, at Osawatomie, the son of John A. and Annie (Fouts) Landers. Monte married Marilyn Stewart Dec. 30, 1951, at Garnett. She died Feb. 9, 2010.
HOISINGTON - Virgil Earl Hogan, 89, died June 23 at Hospice House of Reno County in Hutchinson. Born April 25, 1925, in Hoisington, he was the son of Dennis and Elsie (Jones) Hogan. On June 25, 1946, he married Dolores Jean Lutschg in Hoisington. She died on May 18, 2011. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, living in Buhler since 2010, he was a roughneck for Woodman-Iannitti Drilling Company.
COLDWATER - Kay Ellen Shaffner, 80, passed away on June 24 at Western Plains Regional Medical Center in Dodge City. She was born on April 21, 1934, in Russell, to Gordon Shaffner and Ruth (Griffith) Shaffner. Kay was a resident of Pioneer Lodge in Coldwater. She began living in Pioneer Lodge in 1971. She was a part of Pioneer Lodges family for over 40 years.
DENVER, Colo. - Jason Lee Nolte, 31, of Denver, Colo., formerly of Seneca, was killed on June 21, while at work at Manko Window Systems, in Aurora, Colo. Jason was born March 5, 1983, in Seneca, the son of Robert and Kathleen Nordhus Nolte. Jason grew up in Seneca and attended Sts. Peter and Paul Grade School. OMAHA, Neb. - Thomas P. Seidel, 78, died June 8. He was born on Dec. 24, 1945, in Pratt. A former Great Bend resident, he grew up in Omaha, Neb., and Mitchell, Neb., graduating from Mitchell High School in 1953, and Iowa State University in 1957. He served in the U.S. Navy as a supply officer and then worked for Northern Natural Gas for 27 years, retiring in 1987. During retirement, he volunteered for several grade schools in the Omaha Public School system and for more than 20 years at the Omaha Police Department.
MUENSTER, Texas - Florence Lorraine Williams, 95, died June 17 at a hospital in Denton, Texas. Born March 14, 1919, in Otis, she was the daughter of Samuel and Martha Moore. On Aug. 12, 1937, she married the love of her life, Arthur Warren Williams. Due to Arthur's job in the oil fields, the family moved to many places including Garnett, Great Bend and Albert, and Tonkawa, Okla. Roberta J. Welch, 70, died June 19 at Hays Medical Center. Born Dec. 29, 1943, in Bronx, N.Y., she was the daughter of Robert and Florence (Frank) McCoy. She married Vince Latona in New York; they later divorced. On July 30, 1984, she married Jerry Welch. A Great Bend resident since 1986, coming from Nevada, Mo., she was a bookkeeper for the State of Missouri Department of Revenue. She loved God, family, golf, and her flowers.
DODGE CITY – Arlie "Walt" Redburn, 89, died June 19 at the Kansas Soldiers Home, Halsey Hall, Ft. Dodge. He was born April 21, 1925, at El Dorado, the son of Arlie M. and Mertie D. Wilcox Redburn. A Dodge City resident since the late 1940s, moving from El Dorado, he was a mechanic for John Stickney Inc. for 30 years and a maintenance supervisor at Arrowhead West in Dodge City for 10 years, retiring July 16, 1993.
GREAT BEND - Weldon M. Brozek, 73, died June 16, 2014 at the Newton Medical Center. Born March 12, 1941, in Lucas, he was the son of James A. and Agnes (Rezabek) Brozek. On Oct. 16, 1965, he married Mary "Paula" Hipsher in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1962, coming from Lucas, he was a service technician for Southwestern Bell and AT&T.
