ELLINWOOD-Theresa Schartz, 73, died Aug. 19 at her home in Ellinwood. Born May 15, 1939 at Great Bend, she was the daughter of Wendelin and Dorothy (Herl) Herrman. She grew up in Great Bend, but would later move to Ellinwood after she married LeRoy G. Schartz on Dec. 31, 1955. He died May 26, 2010. Mrs. Schartz was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Ellinwood. She also served with the Altar Society and attended the Prince of Peace Parish of Great Bend. She was a long term active member of Curves.
ODIN - Bernard "Barney" J. Prosser, 88, died Aug. 16 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born July 14, 1924, in Mt. Angel, Ore., he was the son of Joseph A. and Eleanor (Ficker) Prosser. In 1951 he married Gladys Utne in San Diego, Calif. A resident of Odin, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 31 years and retired as a major. He also served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. HESSTON - Iris June (Wetz) Banman, 86, died on Aug. 14 at Kidron Bethel in North Newton. Born May 26, 1926, at Wichita, she was adopted soon after birth by Herman and Myrtle (Ray) Wetz. Raised on a farm near Kiowa, Iris went on to graduate with a degree in music education from the Wichita University and played with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. She taught in Wichita, Clearwater and Ellinwood elementary schools and for many years gave private piano and violin lessons.
Diana Collins, 57, died Aug. 15 at her home in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 19, 1955, at San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Richard and Eulalia (Salazar) Mendez. She married Dickey Collins on Jan. 13, 1973, at Syracuse. They later divorced.
TIMKEN - Jeanette Holopirek, 27, died Aug. 13 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City. She was born June 22, 1985 at Great Bend, the daughter of Terry and Alice (Penka) Holopirek. She was a longtime resident of Timken. Ms. Holopirek was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken and a 2003 Otis-Bison High School graduate. She was active in Rush County 4-H.
LYONS - Mary Elizabeth "Bette" Kennedy, 93, died Aug. 14 at Sunflower Estates, Lyons. She was born Sept. 6, 1918 in Guthrie Okla. the daughter of Carl and Hazel Del (Smith Madden). She lived in Lyons since 1940 and is the former owner of Porter Abstract of Lyons.
HOLYROOD - Vernon K. Bednasek, 85, died Aug. 14 in Salina. Born June 8, 1927 in Ellsworth County, he was the son of John and Rose A. (Borecky) Bednasek. A lifetime resident of the Holyrood area, he was a retired farmer and stockman. On May 20, 1956, he married Alice Wachs in Ellsworth. She survives.
EUREKA - Junior Raymond Watts, of Eureka, died at his residence on Aug. 13, at the age of 84. Born in Quincy on Feb. 3, 1928, he was the son of Charlie Otho and Ruby Marie (Crouch) Watts. Junior was raised in Quincy and attended school there. After his schooling, he went to work in the oil fields as a truck driver. His truck driving nickname was "Big Iron." He retired in 1990, due to poor health.
ST. JOHN - Kenneth T. Siebert, 85, died Aug. 11 at South Wind Hospice House in Pratt. Born June 14, 1927 in rural Pawnee County, he was the son of Theodore R. and Mildred (Kerns) Siebert. A graduate of Radium High School and life-long resident of St. John, he was owner of Siebert Automotive since 1969. On June 12, 1951, he married Mildred M. (Steiner) at Great Bend. She survives.
LAWRENCE - Ervin Francis Huslig, 67, and Mary Ann Huslig, 62, Lawrence, died April 20, 2015. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 27, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence is in charge of arrangements.
HOISINGTON - Ethel Jonas, 91, died April 20, 2015, at Hays Medical Center in Hay. Born on June 1, 1923, in Barton County near Susank, she was the second child of Lora Retta (Gardner) Jonas and Edmund "Edd" G. Jonas. Her brother, Walter was born in 1920. He passed away in 2005.
Theresa Stanley, 73, of Great Bend, died April 19, 2015, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. She was born Oct 3, 1941, at La Crosse, to Henry and Mathilda (Heronema) Basgall. She graduated from La Crosse High School and was united in marriage to William Stanley in 1961 at La Crosse. She worked as a cook for many Great Bend area eating establishments, including JC Penney, A & W, Central Kansas Medical Center, the Petroleum Club, Barton Community College, Black Angus and the Great Bend Senior Center prior to her retirement in 2000.
