TUCSON, Ariz./LARNED - Kathleen Marie Stiles, 69, passed away Oct. 20 in Tucson, Ariz. at home surrounded by her family and friends. Born April 26, 1943, in Greensburg, she was the daughter of Don and Ella Wells Byer. A longtime resident of Larned area, moving to Tucson, Ariz. in 2003, she was a retired Licensed Mental Health Technician at the Larned State Hospital. On July 6, 1960, she married Lonnie Stiles. He died April 17, 1985.
LORRAINE - Wayne D. Mehl, 79, passed away Oct. 21 at his home in rural Lorraine. Born Sept. 25, 1933 in Ellsworth County, he was the son of Ethel (Splitter) and Delmar Mehl. A lifetime resident of the Lorraine area, he was a farmer and stockman. On Feb. 6, 1952, he married Donna Kempke in Junction City. She survives.
MCCRACKEN - Ivan Dale Janke, 56, passed away on Oct. 20 at his home in rural McCracken. Born Jan. 20, 1956 he was the son of Alvin and Ruth (Moore) Janke. They preceded him in death. Ivan graduated McCracken High School in 1974 and attended Fort Hays State University where he met Peggy Stude of Garfield. They were married Oct. 7, 1978 in Larned. He raised cattle and operated the family farm of McCracken.
STERLING - Virgil T. (Grandpa Silly) Sillin, 84, passed away Oct. 19 at Sterling Presbyterian Manor. Born May 6, 1928, in Stafford County, he was the son of Earl and Lucile Krum Sillin. He graduated from Sterling College and Kansas City Mortuary Arts School. He was a funeral director, and had owned and operated Porter and Sillin Funeral Home in Sterling, Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons, and Sillin Funeral Home in Ordway, Colo. RUSSELL - Whilmetta Marie Horn, 91, died Oct. 19 at Vintage Place in Russell. Born on Oct. 7, 1921, on the family farm southeast of Russell, she was the daughter of Emanuel and Mary Elizabeth (Milberger) Dumler. She attended Pioneer School and later attended school in Russell, graduating from Russell High School in 1939. A resident of the Russell community, she worked at the Home State Bank in Russell. On Sept. 21, 1947 she married Max P. Horn in Russell. He preceded her in death on April 24, 2001.
Jay Louis Kimball, 73, died Oct. 17 at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. Born Jan. 20, 1939, in Larned, he was the son of Jay Grant and Sarah Louise (Postlethwaite) Kimball. In 1957 he graduated from Great Bend High School. On Aug. 20, 1959, he married Linda Laffer in Winfield. A resident of Great Bend since 2005, coming from Carson City, Nev., he worked for Lockheed Martin and Hytek Microsystems as a Microelectronics Engineer.
ROZEL - Alice "Pauline" Myers, 91, left this world on Oct. 18 at her home in Rozel. Born Jan. 16, 1921, at Bristow, Okla., she was the daughter of Samuel Alexander and Maude Gertrude Reinhart Warren; she was one of 13 children. On May 7, 1944, she married Cletice N. Myers at Vinita, Okla. He died on Jan. 27, 1979. She was a resident of Rozel since 1973, moving from Great Bend, where they raised their family. LACROSSE--Gwen L. Sell, 89, died Oct. 14 at the Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, La Crosse. Born Nov. 23, 1922, in Wallace, she was the daughter of Leo W. and Minnie I. (Bitter) Frazier. A lifelong resident of Rush County, she was a 1940 graduate of La Crosse High School. On July 6,1946, she married Vernon "Sam" Sell in Reno, Nevada. He preceded her in death March 10, 1994.
Sister Ruth Klein, 97, died Oct. 13, in the Dominican Sisters of Peace Convent Infirmary in Great Bend. Born Jan. 22, 1915, in Lincoln Neb., as Ruth Rose Klein, Sister Ruth was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Helen Hoffman Klein. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community in Great Bend July 2, 1930, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 17, 1933. She celebrated seventy-five years of religious profession in 2008. LACROSSE - Leona M. Leiker, 88, died Oct. 14 at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse. Born May 20, 1924, in Pfeifer, she was the daughter of Casper and Mary (Schmidt) Jacobs. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County. A 1942 graduate of Bison High School, she was a clerk for the United States Postal Service before her retirement in 1979. On Feb. 6, 1945, she married Ralph J. Leiker at St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse. He preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 2005.
LeeRoy A. Legleiter, 78, died Oct. 12 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. He was born July 17, 1934, at Liebenthal, the son of Anton and Genevieve (Schaffer) Legleiter. He married Leota Meier on June 13, 1959, at Hays. A Great Bend resident since 1969, coming from Hays, he was production superintendent for Coronado Oil, retiring in 1999.
OTIS - Connie Lynne (Hoch) Hoopingarner, 72, passed away on June 22, 2015, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse. Born on Aug. 24, 1942, she was the daughter of O.C. ('Poss') and Esther (Keenan) Hoch. In 1960, she graduated from Hoisington High School and went on to earn her Dental Hygiene Degree from the University of Missouri Kansas City. She worked as a Dental Hygienist until her retirement in 2002. On Feb. 29, 1964, she married Larry Dwight Hoopingarner in Las Vegas, Nev. They made their home in Manter.
Hugh Robert "Bud" Steadman, 90, died June 21, 2015, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born May 23, 1925, in Great Bend, he was the son of Frank M. and Blanche Marie (Sterling) Steadman. On July 14, 1946, he married Delores June Schenkel in Bazine. She died on April 28, 2015. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was an engineering technician for Evans, Bierly and Hutchison.
MCKINNEY, Texas - Kimberly Dawn Burkhart died at her home in McKinney, Texas, on May 13, 2015. Born April 4, 1969, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Cliff and Barbara Burkhart. She was employed by American Airlines as an International flight attendant. She served as an MP in the United States Army and was active in Desert Storm.
