Janice Waknitz died Sept. 26 at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla. She was born April 23, 1942, at Green Forest, Ark., the daughter of John Grady and Louella (Wells) Howerton. She married Charles Waknitz Dec. 27, 1966, at Wichita. A retired 30-year school teacher, she had been a Great Bend resident since 1976, coming from Kinsley.
Duane Eldon Abel, 67, of Ellinwood, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013 at the Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Barnett Family Funeral Home, Oskaloosa. Burial will follow at Buster Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. LONGMONT, Colo.- Ada Mae Marquis, 101, died on Sept. 23. She was born Ada Mae Mattal on Jan. 14, 1912, in Bison, to John J. and Sarah C. (Kleweno) Mattal. On May 16, 1929, she graduated from Bison High School. She also attended an all-girl Christian trade school in Kansas City. On June 30, 1938, she married Walter D. Marquis in Hoisington. She lived in Hoisington and Ellinwood before moving to Ogallala, Neb. in 1993 where she resided for nine years. She moved to Longmont, Colo. in 1993 living at Cinnamon Park Assisted Living. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Donald Keith Lowry proclaimed that he had lived the best life ever lived! He always maintained that his death would be much more sacred than his birth. Born Oct. 25th, 1928, Donald was the youngest of seven children of Homer and Verna Lowry and last decedent. Don achieved heavenly glory on Sept. 17, 2013. The Lowry family is reunited and restored!
Jennie Frances Ueckert, 89, died Sept. 19 at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born Aug. 3, 1924, at Stafford, to Louis and Frances (Krkosska) Reiser. She married Paul M. Ueckert April 21, 1945, at Ellinwood. He died July 16, 1995. A lifetime Great Bend resident, she was a homemaker.
OGALLAH - Richard D. "Bandit" Owen, 67, died Sept. 14, at his home. Born Feb. 24, 1946, in Monahans, Texas, he was the son of William Thomas and Catherine (McNett) Owen. On June 23, 1973, he married Beverly Combs, in Conroe, Texas. She passed away April 1, 2008. On Aug. 15, 2009, Richard married Clarese Mong, in Ogallah. She survives. Richard was a welder and truck driver.
