Colleen Nell Riegel, 82, died Oct. 7 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Nov. 29, 1929 in Dodge City, she was the daughter of George W. and Mae L. (Dooley) Fowler. In 1947 she graduated from Dodge City High School and in 1951 from Emporia State Teachers College. She received her Masters degree from Kansas State University in 1979. OTIS - Raymond E. Pierce, 78, died Oct. 3 at St. Johns Health Center in Hays. Born Feb. 15, 1934 in Thomas County, he was the son of Orvel and Glenna (Stokes) Pierce. A former resident of the Morland area, he was a driller in the oilfield.
RUSSELL - Julian H. Gonzales, 46, of Russell, died Oct. 6 north of Great Bend. Born July 2, 1966 in Tulia, Texas, he was the son of Larry and Mary Karlin (Garcia) Gonzales. At the age of 2, Julian and his family moved to Goodland, where he grew up and attended schools. On June 16, 1993 he married Vicky Werth in Victoria. ST. JOHN - Maurine E. Frink, 87, died Oct. 6 in St. John. Born April 18, 1925 in Greensburg, she was the daughter of William O. and Mabel E. (Kennedy) Dorland. On Nov. 26, 1944, she married Robert H. Frink, Jr. in Greensburg. He survives. She was a 1943 graduate of Greensburg High School. A resident of St. John since 1954, she worked in the Stafford County Clerk's office and 20 years as office manager for Farm Bureau Insurance of St. John.
Wanda Smith, 79, died Oct. 7 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born May 22, 1933, she was the daughter of Lucius Lee and Gladys Fern Greene Cobb. On July 1, 1950 she married William R. Smith in Kansas City, Mo. He died on Oct. 21, 1999. A resident of Great Bend since 1999, coming from Kansas City, Mo., she was employed by Manor Bakery as a department manager, for Clarke Printing Company, and was a homemaker.
Charlotte Davis, 86, died Oct. 7 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born April 13, 1926 in Coffeyville, she was the daughter of Levi Bethel and Tina Mabel (Rose) Haines. On May 20, 1950 she married Samuel G. Davis in Corpus Christi, Texas. He died on Sept. 14, 1976. A resident of Great Bend since 1968, she was a clerk for the Barton County Treasurers and Appraisers Offices.
LAURIE, Mo. - Joanne Barr passed away Sept. 30. Born March 15, 1933, at Wichita, she was the daughter of Gene and Ruth Ann Connor. She attended Wichita North High School and went on to nursing school to obtain her degree as a Registered Nurse.
James "Bradley" Kilgore, 35, died Oct. 1 at Hardtner. Born Sept. 17, 1977, at Hutchinson, he was the son of William F. and Brenda L. (Davis) Kilgore. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he was a hand for Clark Well Service, Medicine Lodge.
Margaret J. Krug Shomber, 90, died Oct. 3 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born March 26, 1922, at Causey, N.M., the daughter of Thomas M. and Cora Mae (Clouse) Morrison. She married Gerald H. Krug on Nov. 3, 1950, at Cunningham. He died Dec. 25, 1978. She married Delbert L. Shomber on Feb. 25, 1989, at Great Bend. He died April 24, 1992. A Great Bend resident since 1945, coming from Wichita, she was a sales clerk for Sears and Lischesky's.
LARNED - Wilhelm (Bill) H. Schwartzkopf, 101, died on Oct. 1. Born Oct. 19, 1910, he was son of Philip and Mary Georg Schwartzkopf. He was born north of Alexander and lived there until he was 8 years old. He attended school in Alexander and went to Fort Hays College where he obtained his degree in business education and agriculture. His teaching career included, Johnson and Bushton, but he spent most of his time in Larned, teaching typing, business, and organizing the distributive education program involving the Larned merchants. LORRAINE - Charlie "Choc" Perkins, 81, died Sept. 29 at his home. Born Sept. 4, 1931 in Ringling, Okla., he was the son of Hosey and Eddie (Underwood) Perkins. A resident of the Lorraine area since 1945, he was a retired lead man for Ref-Chem in Bushton and a farmer and horseman. On Oct. 15, 1953, he married Elda Janzen in Lorraine. She survives.
