NEWTON - John Banman, 95, died Nov. 29, at Kidron Bethel Health Care in North Newton. Born on June 23, 1918 in Canton, he was the son of Jacob and Helen (Pankratz) Banman. He graduated from Newton High School, attended Bethel College for one year prior to completing his bachelor's degree at Wichita State University in 1940. Two years later he received the first master's degree given in clarinet performance from Northwestern University. He was a music educator for over 65 years in Clearwater, Ellinwood, and Great Bend.
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Esther Dunham, 89, died on Dec. 2 at Golfcrest Health Care Center in Hollywood, Fla. Born July 16, 1924 in Scottsbluff, Neb., she was the daughter of Lee Selby and Alice Butler. On June 9, 1945 she married Jack Dunham in Hays. A former resident of Great Bend before moving to Florida, she was employed at J.C. Penneys and the Barton County Health Department until her retirement.
Lewis DeWitt, 69, died on Dec. 2 at his home in Great Bend. Born Dec. 12, 1943, in Cass Lake, Minn., he was the son of Fred F. and Katherine (Gaubatz) DeWitt. On Nov. 17, 1962 he married Dennie Lou Short at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. He moved to Kansas in 1962, residing in Lyons. Lewis and Dennie moved to Hutchinson, where he worked for International Harvester in Hutchinson. SALINA - Wanda Lee Funk, 75, passed away on Dec. 1, at Kenwood View Rehabilitation & Health Care. Born on Feb. 8, 1938, in WaKeeney, she was the daughter of Hannah and Horrace Hobbick. She worked as a housekeeper.
MEADE - John William (Bill) Eudaley, 88, died early Sunday morning Dec. 1, at the Lone Tree Retirement Center in Meade. Born March 16, 1925 in Marlow, Okla., he was the son of Oscar W. and Anna M. (Dawson) Eudaley. He graduated from Carnegie High School in Carnegie, Okla. John was a veteran serving from 1943-1946, in the United States Navy Seabees. AMARILLO, Texas - Gladys Ruth Gardner, 80, died Nov. 28 at Bluebonnet Assisted Living in Amarillo, Texas. Born April 2, 1933, in Elbing, she was the daughter of Paul and Helen (Hawks) Binder. On June 12, 1954, she married Louis Edward Gardner in Hoisington. He died on July 19, 1995. A resident of Amarillo, Texas, since 2005, coming from Hoisington, she was a nurse technician for Clara Barton Hospital and Central Kansas Medical Center.
HUTCHINSON – Phyllis E. Ankerholz Fimple, went to be with her Lord and loved ones Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Hospice and Homecare of Reno County, Hutchinson. Born Aug. 11, 1922, at Augusta, she was the daughter of Bertram H. and Flora E. (Fitzwilliam) St. Clair. She married Lawrence H. Ankerholz Nov. 20, 1941, at Salem, Ill. He died Dec. 7, 1983. She then married Rufus P. Fimple Jan. 15, 1994, at Great Bend.
Lelia A. Thompson, 94 died Wednesday, Nov. 27 at Sterling Presbyterian Manor, Sterling. Born Aug. 5, 1919, at Arpelar, Okla., she was the daughter of Boone and Virgie Mae (Ezell) Turner. She married Norman Thompson March, 26, 1938, at McAlester, Okla. He died March 18, 2002.
SALINA - Verla L. Hipp, 82, died on Nov. 26, 2013 at Sterling House of Salina. Born Jan. 6, 1931, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Frank Ernest and Helen (Schwartz) Ruble. On July 15, 1953 she married Robert F. Hipp in Great Bend. He died on Oct. 12, 1989. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, moving to Salina in 2009, she was employed for U.S.D. 428 as a Certified Food Service worker for 15 years, retiring in 1994. She was a gifted seamtress.
QUINTER - Rita Houdeshell, 72, of Quinter, died on Nov. 23, 2013 at Hays Medical Center. Born June 7, 1941, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Harley J. and Helen (Strobel) Everett. She was a graduate of Radium High School. On March 4, 1963, Rita was united in marriage to Larry W. Houdeshell in Dodge City. She worked for many years and retired as a certified nurse's assistant at Gove County Hospital in Quinter.
