Etta "Jane" Akings, 84, died June 28 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born Aug. 9, 1926 at Barnsdall, Okla., the daughter of John Oliver and Julia Ava Anthony. Jane married Landon Fletcher Akings July 29, 1944. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Akings was a resident of Great Bend since 2003, coming from Olathe. She and Landon owned the Oxford Place Steak House in Olathe for 30 years. She was also a cook for the Galatia school district from 1955 to 1964.
Roger N. Berry, 61, died June 29 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born Sept. 3, 1949 at Hoisington, the son of Everette and Daisy (Million) Berry.
CLAFLIN - Magdaline G. Reif, 89, died June 28 at Larned Health Care Center. Born July 15, 1921 in Ellinwood, she was the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Wurm) Hirsh. On July 18, 1939 she married Frank J. Reif in Ellinwood. He died on Aug. 17, 1989. A longtime resident of Claflin, coming from Ellinwood, she was employed by Ell-Kan in Ellsworth and Fuller Brush in Great Bend.

LARNED - A memorial service for former Larned resident Laura Harrell Arbuckle will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday by the duck pond at Schnack Park in Larned. Mrs. Arbuckle died April 23 at Aurora, Colo.
Margaret Iola Tammen, 92, died June 27 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born July 15, 1918 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Charles Leslie and Helen Irene (Mayes) Naylor. On Aug. 24, 1941 she married August Herman "Gus" Tammen in Great Bend. He died July 2, 2001. A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was a homemaker and farm wife. She was very active in and committed to her church and family. She was involved in her children's activities, especially loving their 4-H projects, enjoying quilting, playing cards and her coffee group.
Helen V. Baldwin, 88, died June 27 at her home in Great Bend. Born Sept. 11, 1922 at her home in Ansley, Neb., she was the daughter of Fred and Anna (Mattox) Niedt. On April 26, 1943 she married Leon W. Baldwin. He died May 30, 1971. A resident of Great Bend since 2004, coming from Twin Falls, Idaho, she worked in aircraft manufacturing, the Tupperware Factory, and was a farm wife.

Louis Elmer "Bud" Black, 85, died June 27 at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson. Born Jan. 5, 1926 at Cherryvale, he was the son of Louis G. and Sarah Ellen (Barker) Black. On Oct. 13, 1950 he married Violet Wittman in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1947, coming from Cherryvale, he was a truck driver and delivery man for Santa Fe Trail Transportation.
HUTCHINSON - Janis Lin Bair, 68, of Hutchinson, died June 26, at Hospice House. Born Sept. 7, 1942, in Hannibal, Mo., she was the daughter of James Derrill and Helen Victoria Linsner Pratt. She was a 1960 graduate of Wichita North High School, a 1964 graduate of Pittsburg State University, with a B.A. in Education, and she received her M.A. in Administration from Wichita State University.
BELPRE - Clifford Wesley Belt, 58, died June 17 at the home of his son in Melton, Fla. Born on Sept. 23, 1952, in Larned, he was the son of Lloyd and Leota Mead Belt. He attended school in Trousdale, Belpre and Macksville.
CHASE - Shirley Evelyn Sutton Schmidt, 91, died June 26 at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. Born Oct. 10, 1919, in Hudson, she was the daughter of Lesley Edmon and Mettie Derr Sutton. On July 6, 1938, she married Edward "Ed" Carl Schmidt in Great Bend. He died on Nov. 7, 2001. A resident of Chase since 1938, formerly of Great Bend, she was a retired cook at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons.
Gerald "Jerry" Wagnon, 67, died June 12 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Dec. 23, 1943, at Joplin, Mo., the son of Dean and Leona (Beatty) Dugan. He married Wanda Halling on Feb. 14, 1981, at Dundee. He worked for Reiter Chevrolet, Standish Motors and Jeff O'Neill Ford as a car salesman.
PFEIFER - Laurine M. Dreiling, 87, died, June 25 at Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. She was born Feb. 20, 1924, at Emmeram, to Joseph J. and Mary (Hammerschmidt) Dreiling. She married Norbert F. Dreiling on Aug. 29, 1944, at Hays. He died May 3, 1977. She was a homemaker.
WICHITA - Bashor, C. LeRoy, 74, passed away on Oct. 11. He was a proud Vietnam veteran serving 10 years in the United States Navy. Following the military he graduated Fort Hays State University with a master's degree in psychology. He was a retired school psychologist for USD 428 in Great Bend.
Nadine Dreiling, 81, died Oct. 10, at Hays Medical Center. Born June 25, 1933, in Neck City, Mo., she was the daughter of George and Vera (Sargent) Moore. On Oct. 2, 1954, she married Donald A. Dreiling in Chase. He died on Nov. 11, 2010. A resident of Great Bend since 1954, coming from Chase, she and her husband owned and operated Don's Food Mart and she retired from Dillon's Pharmacy. She loved her grandchildren and watching sports, especially the University of Kansas Jayhawks and New York Yankees.
WINFIELD - Donald M. "Don" Kline, 87, of Winfield, passed away on Oct. 11, at Cumbernauld Village. Born Aug. 29, 1927, in Wichita, he was the son of Arthur C. and Martha H. (Harris) Kline. He was raised and educated in the Marion and Great Bend areas. Don left school prior to graduation to join the United States Navy. He proudly served his country on the USS Monrovia as a Medical Corpsman from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1949. HOISINGTON - George L. Carson, 71, died Aug. 30, at Clara Barton Hospital. Born July 18, 1943 in Great Bend, he was the son of Russell and Pearl (Smith) Carson. On March 3, 1967, he married Gloria Newell in Damar. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State University. A lifetime resident of rural Barton County, he was employed by the Kansas Fish and Game Commission as a biologist.
HOISINGTON - Kirby Dean Ricke, 61, died Oct. 11, at Almost Home in Great Bend. Born July 2, 1953, in Alva, Okla., he was the son of Theodore Dean and Darlene (Huffman) Ricke. Kirby graduated in 1971 from Hoisington High School. He was active in both vocal music and band programs, excelling at the trumpet. Paul E. Dyer, 84, died Oct. 8 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 20, 1930, in Great Bend, he was the son of Homer and Katherine (Jones) Dyer. On Jan. 4, 1954, he married Julitta M. Elsen, in Great Bend. She died on March 12, 1995. He was a lifetime resident of Great Bend.
John D. Trimmer, 65, of Great Bend and formerly of Pawnee Rock and Dundee, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 8, at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. He was born on Feb. 11, 1949, at Belleville, to George Franklin and Edna Alene (Larr) Trimmer. He graduated from Republic County Schools in 1965 and was united in marriage to Diana Levingston on June 10, 1976, at Pawnee Rock. She died on July 22, 2013. John worked as a chain hand in the oilfield prior to his retirement. He enjoyed rock collecting, watching wrestling and spending time with family.
