Richard J. "Dick" Stevens, 70, died July 31, 2011, at his home in Great Bend. Born July 17, 1941, in Albuquerque, N.M., he was the son of R.J. and Janet (Ewing) Stevens. On Sept. 13, 1985, he married Marie Smith at Hugoton. She survives. A resident of Great Bend since 1997, coming from Hugoton, he was in law enforcement, and was a meat cutter, having co-owned Dick and Marie's Venture Foods in Hugoton. HERINGTON - Elaine V. Talbot, 87, of Herington, died July 21, 2011, at the Medicalodges of Herington. Born July 5, 1924, in Bloomfield, Mo., she was the daughter of Linord E. and Grace M. (Hopkins) Caldwell. On July 12, 1946, she married E. Ray Talbot at St. Louis, Mo. She received her associate degree with William & Jewell University. She was a homemaker and a Nurses Aide.
ELLINWOOD - Gladys T. Muller, 94, died July 30, 2011, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Oct. 3, 1916, in rural Seward, she was the daughter of Wilbert William Dewey and Josephine Sims. A resident of south Great Bend, moving to Ellinwood in 1938, she was a homemaker and Certified Nurse Aide at Ellinwood District Hospital for over 20 years. On Aug. 6, 1938, she married Adolph Muller at Howard. He died Feb. 5, 1989.
Ronald J. Karlin, 74, died July 30 at Hays Medical Center. Born Sept. 26, 1936, in Hays, he was the son of Henry W. and Evelyn M. (Rupp) Karlin. On June 7, 1958, he married Virginia Dufford Wysong in Larned. She survives. A resident of Great Bend since 1943, coming from Hays, he was an area salesman for Frito Lay, retiring after 21 years. He was an avid golfer and gardener and enjoyed his dogs. He was known for his Santa Claus helicopter, which he had on display each Christmas at his home on Broadway.
Melvin Clay Simpson, 94, died July 31, 2011, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born June 17, 1917, at Newby, Okla., the son of William Thomas and Sara (Davis) Simpson. He married Frances Elizabeth Jackson on March 13, 1934, at Osceola, Mo. A Great Bend resident since 1941, coming from Eaton, Colo., he was owner and operator of Murray-Simpson Casing Crews.
HOISINGTON - Jean Polzin, 81, died Aug. 1, 2011, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. She was born Dec. 27, 1929, at Hoisington the daughter of Viola Depiesse. Jean was 6 years old when her mother passed, and she was then raised by her grandparents, Jac and Mary Meyeres Depiesse. She married Rom Polzin on April 16, 1952, at Milwaukee, Wis. He died Aug. 5, 1968. She was Postmaster in Beaver for 20 years, retiring in 1991, and had been a Hoisington resident since 1998, coming from Beaver.
GREAT BEND - Frederick F. Dreiling, 89, died July 27, 2011 at his home.
WICHITA -- Herbert Marlin Wong, 87, retired restaurant owner, passed away July 2. He was a strong –spirited person, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many people. He will be missed by friends and family. Herbert Marlin Wong was born in Canton Village, Canton, China, on Sept. 7, 1923.

Danny F. Renfro, 60, died July 28 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. He was born Dec. 26, 1950, at Great Bend, to Willard Francis and Waunita Lucille (Moore) Renfro. He married Karen Sue Miller on July 22, 1992, at Great Bend. She died Aug. 24, 2010. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he worked in the oilfield.
Charles W. Bybee, 71, died July 27 at Kansas Medical Center in Andover. He was born Sept. 16, 1939, at Geneseo, to Paul William and Helen (Morehouse) Bybee. He married Janet Stroup on Aug. 9, 1963, at Chase.

HOISINGTON - William Edmond Hobdy, 33, Hoisington, passed away July 23 in Omaha, Neb.
Frank E. Thurman, 65, of Great Bend, passed away on Friday evening, Dec. 5, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. Born Sept. 25, 1949, in Scottsbluff, Neb., he was the son of Arthur and Ethel (Deeder) Thurman. On June 29, 2000, he was united in marriage to Mary Walsh in Council Grove. A Great Bend resident since 2006, having moved here from Alta Vista, he loved NASCAR, and had a passion for fixing up old cars and spending precious time with his grandchildren.
HOISINGTON - Teresa Marie Rome, 87, died Dec. 9 at her home Hoisington. Born Oct. 23, 1927, in Odin, she was the daughter of Frank and Antoinette (Hermann) Gerritzen. In 1955, she married Norbert Joseph Rome. He died on June 6, 1981. A longtime resident of Hoisington, she worked as a dietary aide for Clara Barton Hospital. She enjoyed playing pinochle and watching her grandchildren's activities.

Karl Lee Brack, 84, died Dec. 7, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Nov. 29, 1930, in Larned, he was the son of Sol M. and Neva M. (Toots) Brack. He was a 1948 graduate of Great Bend High School and received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Kansas State University in 1953. On Sept. 28, 1958, he married Loreta J. "Reta" Hill in Hoisington. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Mr. Brack began work at KCKT-TV as a sales representative until February 1956, when he started work for American State Bank and Bank IV, retiring in 1991 ...
HOISINGTON - Velma H. McMillin, 90, died Dec. 4 at Via Christi Hospital, St. Francis, in Wichita. Born Jan. 20, 1924, in Melvern, she was the daughter of Oscar and Hazel (Goldsmith) Beck. On Nov. 30, 1940, she married H.D. McMillin in Ottawa. He died July 23, 1993. A resident of Hoisington since 1940, she worked as a florist for many years and she was also the co-owner of Trinkets and Treasures, an antique shop in Hoisington. She was an avid sports fan cheering for the Chiefs, Kansas University and the Green Bay Packers.
