KANSAS CITY - Donald E. McCosh, 77, died March 27. Born Nov. 14, 1933 in Traer, he was the son of Earl Francis McCosh and Zelma Fagan McCosh. He was a 1951 graduate of Great Bend High School and then attended Fort Hays State University. After graduating from FHSU in 1955, he enlisted in the United States Army and served for two years in the Intelligence Corps. After his honorable discharge, he continued service in the U.S. Army Reserves until Nov. 28, 1961. In 1953 he married Beverly Ann Brown. They later divorced.
James E. "Pappy" Bell, 82, died April 10 at his home surrounded by his loving family in Great Bend. He was born May 18, 1928, at Peabody, the son of Jesse M. and Anna (Swift) Bell. He married Grace Ann Smith June 15, 1952, at Great Bend. He worked for Petro-log and Tomlinson Oil Company until his retirement in 1989. Charles F. "Chuck" Edwards, 96, died April 9 at River Bend Assisted Living in Great Bend. Born Jan. 13, 1915 at Washington, D.C., he was the son of Charles Frederick and Mary (Faunce) Edwards. In 1936 he graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a degree in political science. A resident of Great Bend since 1957, coming from Garden City, he was retired as vice-president for Central Telephone and Utility. He was an avid golfer and trap shooter. He loved reading, taking a special interest in history and political science.
ELLINWOOD - Eunice E. Harrelson, 75, died April 5 at her home in Independence, La. She was born Feb. 24, 1936, at Tanga Pahoa, La., the daughter of Henry Devoe Spillman and Ada Belle Jenkins. She married Bobbie Glen Harrelson on Nov. 23, 1966, in New Orleans, La. He died July 13, 2010. A resident of Baptist and Independence, La., for the past 16 years, she had also lived in Valley Center, Kan., for 36 years.
Patricia Ann Schmidt, 87, died April 9 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 11, 1923, at Syracuse, Kan., she was the daughter of George Francis "Frank" and Alma Madge (Brown) Shirley. On July 26, 1946, she married Eugene G. Schmidt at Syracuse. He died on Feb. 22, 1986. After receiving her education degree from Emporia State University, she taught at Johnson and Syracuse. A resident of Great Bend since 1993, coming from Syracuse, she was a retired librarian for the Hamilton County Public Library in Syracuse. She especially enjoyed traveling, both nationally and internationally, experiencing the world.
ELLINWOOD - Carl George Miller, 86, died April 10 at Woodhaven Care Center in Elllinwood. Born Oct. 22, 1924, in rural Barton County, he was the son of Conrad and Anna Reints Miller. On April 9, 1950, he married Evelyn May Bryant. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he was a retired farmer.
Nora Jean (Doubek) Shorock, 58, died April 7 at her son's home in Lawrence. Born Feb. 15, 1953, at Pratt, she was the daughter of Van and Ellen (Hamar) Doubek. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1974 from Pittsburg State University. On July 4, 1976, she married Donald Walter Shorock in Pratt. He predeceased her on Dec. 2, 2010. They moved to Great Bend in 1977. After a few years as a teacher, she worked in medical transcription and records for Central Kansas Medical Center and later independently.
SOUTH HUTCHINSON - Mabel J. Flickinger, 96, of South Hutchinson, died April 9 at Mennonite Manor. She was born June 14, 1914, the daughter of Adam and Margaret Radenberg Disque. She was a homemaker and lifetime caregiver, raising all of her 12 brothers and sisters. She was a life member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Holyrood, and a member of the El Dorado Camping Club.

WICHITA - Bashor, C. LeRoy, 74, passed away on Oct. 11. He was a proud Vietnam veteran serving 10 years in the United States Navy. Following the military he graduated Fort Hays State University with a master's degree in psychology. He was a retired school psychologist for USD 428 in Great Bend.
Nadine Dreiling, 81, died Oct. 10, at Hays Medical Center. Born June 25, 1933, in Neck City, Mo., she was the daughter of George and Vera (Sargent) Moore. On Oct. 2, 1954, she married Donald A. Dreiling in Chase. He died on Nov. 11, 2010. A resident of Great Bend since 1954, coming from Chase, she and her husband owned and operated Don's Food Mart and she retired from Dillon's Pharmacy. She loved her grandchildren and watching sports, especially the University of Kansas Jayhawks and New York Yankees.
WINFIELD - Donald M. "Don" Kline, 87, of Winfield, passed away on Oct. 11, at Cumbernauld Village. Born Aug. 29, 1927, in Wichita, he was the son of Arthur C. and Martha H. (Harris) Kline. He was raised and educated in the Marion and Great Bend areas. Don left school prior to graduation to join the United States Navy. He proudly served his country on the USS Monrovia as a Medical Corpsman from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1949. HOISINGTON - George L. Carson, 71, died Aug. 30, at Clara Barton Hospital. Born July 18, 1943 in Great Bend, he was the son of Russell and Pearl (Smith) Carson. On March 3, 1967, he married Gloria Newell in Damar. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State University. A lifetime resident of rural Barton County, he was employed by the Kansas Fish and Game Commission as a biologist.
HOISINGTON - Kirby Dean Ricke, 61, died Oct. 11, at Almost Home in Great Bend. Born July 2, 1953, in Alva, Okla., he was the son of Theodore Dean and Darlene (Huffman) Ricke. Kirby graduated in 1971 from Hoisington High School. He was active in both vocal music and band programs, excelling at the trumpet. Paul E. Dyer, 84, died Oct. 8 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 20, 1930, in Great Bend, he was the son of Homer and Katherine (Jones) Dyer. On Jan. 4, 1954, he married Julitta M. Elsen, in Great Bend. She died on March 12, 1995. He was a lifetime resident of Great Bend.
John D. Trimmer, 65, of Great Bend and formerly of Pawnee Rock and Dundee, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 8, at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. He was born on Feb. 11, 1949, at Belleville, to George Franklin and Edna Alene (Larr) Trimmer. He graduated from Republic County Schools in 1965 and was united in marriage to Diana Levingston on June 10, 1976, at Pawnee Rock. She died on July 22, 2013. John worked as a chain hand in the oilfield prior to his retirement. He enjoyed rock collecting, watching wrestling and spending time with family.
