Paul D. Langen, 73, of Great Bend, died Aug. 28 in Fort Worth, Texas. He was born March 2, 1938 in Easton, Penn., the son of William J. and Nan Conard Langen who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, Penn. He was a veteran of Berlin Airlift 7th Army, 56th Medical Battalion.
ELLINWOOD - Esther I. Burhenn, 97, died Aug. 26 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Feb. 21, 1914 in Barton County, she was the daughter of Paul and Lillian (Foelgner) Kasselman. In 1932, she graduated from Ellinwood High School. On Jan. 27, 1939 she married Ralph Burhenn in Stafford. He died on June 23, 1993. She was lifetime resident of Barton County. Before her retirement, she was a school teacher in Ellinwood. She moved to Great Bend in 1950 and was a cook at Harrison Middle School and then for the central kitchen facility for USD 428.
WILSON - Lucille Weber, 91, died Aug. 26, at the Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Sept. 19, 1919 in Dubuque, she was the daughter of William and Katie Weber Polzin. On Nov. 8, 1944, she married Marland Weber in Beaver. He died Aug. 2, 1997. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a partner with her brother John Polzin and operated the J&L Department Store for 10 years. WICHITA - Venita E. Moore, 89, died Aug. 26 at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita. Born Sept. 11, 1921 in Rush County, she was the daughter of E.M. and Mollie Ernst Moore. She graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1939, and attended Fort Hays Kansas State College. A resident of Wichita for 36 1/2 years, coming from Dallas, Texas, she was employed for several years by Federal Land Bank, working in their LaCrosse, Oberlin and Larned offices. She then worked for an oil company in Great Bend, transferring to their San Antonio, Texas office.
ELLINWOOD - Eugene (Gene) R. Starnes, 80, died Aug. 27, 2011, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. He was born Sept. 30, 1930, at Kansas City, Kan., to Walter Johnson Starnes and Julia Catherine Bush Starnes. He married Edna Kathryn LeManske on Feb. 18, 1952, at Stony Point. A longtime resident of Ellinwood and Chase, he had been a policeman in Ellinwood and retired from Fuller Brush in Great Bend.
KINGMAN - Willie V. Bowman, 73, died Aug. 19, 2011. Born April 10, 1938, at Pauls Valley, Okla., he was the son Ervin and Mattie Mumford Bowman. A longtime resident of Great Bend, he was a retired oil field shop foreman. On Aug. 15, 1959, he married Leona Ingram. She died Nov. 1, 1997. On Oct. 24, 2003, he married Lou Allen-Redd. She survives.
TOPEKA - Services for Laura Linn Knowles will be at 10 a.m on Wednesday, May 27, at First Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Glasco Cemetery. OSBORNE - Kenneth G. "Shorty" Hackerott, formally of Pawnee Rock, died on Feb. 28, 2015, at Parkview Care Center in Osborne. Born on July 17, 1936, in Rooks County, he was the son of Otto R. Hackerott and Belle (Mitchell) Hackerott. He loved books, old cars, trucks and tractors and enjoyed the 3-I shows.
HOISINGTON - Luella "Lu" Fercking, 78, went to be with her Lord on May 10, 2015, at Hays Medical Center. Born Jan. 3, 1937, in Comanche County, at her Aunt Faye's farm house, she was the daughter of John and Lillie Cline. In 1954, she graduated from Ness City High School. On June 3, 1954, she married Robert "Ray" Fercking. He went to be with his Lord on Oct. 3, 2001. They moved to Great Bend in 1968.
