HOISINGTON - Alfred L. Richardson, 74, died Jan. 29 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born June 1, 1936, at Long Island, Kan., he was the son of Herbert and Mae (Lockwood) Richardson. On March 24, 1958, he married Georgia Seigler at Hoisington. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, he worked as a roughneck in the oilfield, and after retiring was an animal control officer in Hoisington and did various other jobs.
Theo M. Bear, 89, died Jan. 30 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Sept. 4, 1921, in Lucas, she was the daughter of Walter O. and Blanche B. (Barr) Nichols. On Sept. 19, 1942 she married Myrl Bear in Junction City. He died Dec. 7, 1996. A resident of Great Bend since 1970, coming from Wichita, she was a bookkeeper at Great Bend Manor and an elementary school teacher in Russell County.
OLMITZ - Tanner Joseph Hlavaty, 7, died Jan. 29 at his home in Olmitz. Born May 8, 2003, in Great Bend, he was the son of Kevin L. and Cambria A. (Bahr) Hlavaty. A lifetime resident of Olmitz, he was a second-grade student at Otis-Bison Elementary School.
WICHITA - Dorothy M. (Wilson) Hannah, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Reflection Living Center in Wichita, at the age of 94. Dorothy was born Oct. 26, 1917 in Jetmore, the daughter of Roscoe H. and Dollie (Raser) Wilson. She was Valedictorian of her high school class and received her bachelor's degree from Southwestern College in 1941. She married John T. Hannah on Oct. 30, 1953. Dorothy was a paralegal for many years and was a charter member for the Trinity United Methodist Church, both in Great Bend. Dorothy treasured her family dearly, enjoyed traveling and loved a good laugh.
NEVEDA, Mo. - Dorothy Hamilton, 75, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Jan. 27 at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a short battle with cancer. She was born Jan. 14, 1936, in Claflin, to Anthony and Mary Kimpler Straub. She married Harry Hamilton on Sept. 20, 1954, in Decatur, Ind.
MEDICINE LODGE - Josephine M. Kimball, 83, died Jan. 28 at her home in Medicine Lodge. She was born Jan. 15, 1928, in St. Leo, Kingman County, the daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth (Bayer) Becker. On April 8, 1947, she married Everett Kimball in St. Leo. He survives.
WINNSBORO, Texas - Mrs. Johnna Stewart Hughes was born on Jan. 28, 1922, on the family farm in Brumley, near Gilmer, Texas, to John M. and Ida Mauck Stewart. She departed this life on Jan. 26, two days short of her 89th birthday. She and her husband of 52 years, Mr. George W. "Cotton" Hughes, were married on June 13, 1945, near Pittsburg, Texas. They moved to Winnsboro in 1946, where they raised their family. Cotton passed away in the family home in 1997 and then Johnna moved to Great Bend in 2001 to live near her family.
CARSON, Calif. -- Carl Edward James was born on Nov. 30, 1936, in Great Bend. He was youngest of nine children born to Louis and Alma James. He accepted Christ and followed the path that God laid out for his life. Carl graduated from Great Bend High School in 1954. He attended Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1958. He also attended UCLA, where he received two master degrees, one in Engineering and Math, 1962, and the other in Executive Management, 1974.
TIMKEN - Donald D. "Donnie" Holopirek, 72, of Timken, died Jan. 25 at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson. Born July 27, 1938, in Rush County, he was the son of Ralph and Blanche (Smrcka) Holopirek. On Nov. 15, 1965, he married Frances Herrman at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Timken. A lifelong resident of Rush County he was a farmer, welder and a truck driver for the Rush County Highway Department before his retirement.
LINCOLN - Hazel May Broberg, 93, of Lincoln, died Jan. 26 at Lincoln. She was born Nov. 20, 1917, at rural Lincoln, the daughter of Clarence and Elsie Hall Broberg. She was a teacher.
Mary Frances "Dolly" Gabel, 84, died Jan. 23 at Warrenton, Mo. Memorial service will be at a later late and will be announced by Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend.
Cecilia C. "Susie" Ward, 89, died Jan. 26 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. She was born Nov. 30, 1921, at Beaver, the daughter of Valentine and Anna M. (Feltes) Kramer. She married Leonard "Buck" Ward on June 14, 1962, at Miami, Okla. He died July 7, 1983. She was a retired bookkeeper, and co-owner of Ward Motel.
SOUTH HUTCHINSON - Denise Lee Hayden, 53, died Jan. 25 at the Mennonite Friendship Manor. She was born June 14, 1957, in Great Bend, the daughter of Leo L. and Bertie Lou (Siefkes) Hayden. She worked seven years as a management analyst for the federal government in Frankfort, Germany, and also worked for the city of Hutchinson. She was a 1975 graduate of St. John High School, and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from KSU.
Carl F. Fry, 54, died Jan. 22 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Aug. 26, 1956, he was the son of Max Eugene Fry Sr. and Esther Mae (Johnson) Fry. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, he graduated from Great Bend High School. In the 1990s Carl worked at the Brit Spaugh Zoo. He enjoyed animals and bird watching.
Rachel Skidmore, 98, died Jan. 25 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Jan. 1, 1913, in Bison, she was the daughter of John C. and Kathryn E. (Steitz) Scheuerman. A resident of Great Bend since 1938, she was a homemaker. She completed nine years of school in Rush County. On Oct. 1, 1939, she married William F. Skidmore in Otis. He died in January 1996.
Reymundo Martinez, 27, passed away on Oct. 11, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born on Dec. 29, 1986, in Garden City, he was the son of Martin Martinez and Lupe (Rubio) Martinez. He moved to Great Bend, at an early age and worked construction with his godfather, Arturo Escamilla.
BURWELL, NEB. - Donitta Ann Conrad, 50, of Burwell, Neb. died on Oct. 11, at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Jan. 13, 1964, in Ransom, she was the daughter of Donald and Ruby (Armer) Popp. She attended elementary school at Pawnee Rock, and in 1982, graduated from Hoisington High School. WICHITA - Bashor, C. LeRoy, 74, passed away on Oct. 11. He was a proud Vietnam veteran serving 10 years in the United States Navy. Following the military he graduated Fort Hays State University with a master's degree in psychology. He was a retired school psychologist for USD 428 in Great Bend.
Nadine Dreiling, 81, died Oct. 10, at Hays Medical Center. Born June 25, 1933, in Neck City, Mo., she was the daughter of George and Vera (Sargent) Moore. On Oct. 2, 1954, she married Donald A. Dreiling in Chase. He died on Nov. 11, 2010. A resident of Great Bend since 1954, coming from Chase, she and her husband owned and operated Don's Food Mart and she retired from Dillon's Pharmacy. She loved her grandchildren and watching sports, especially the University of Kansas Jayhawks and New York Yankees.
WINFIELD - Donald M. "Don" Kline, 87, of Winfield, passed away on Oct. 11, at Cumbernauld Village. Born Aug. 29, 1927, in Wichita, he was the son of Arthur C. and Martha H. (Harris) Kline. He was raised and educated in the Marion and Great Bend areas. Don left school prior to graduation to join the United States Navy. He proudly served his country on the USS Monrovia as a Medical Corpsman from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1949. HOISINGTON - George L. Carson, 71, died Aug. 30, at Clara Barton Hospital. Born July 18, 1943 in Great Bend, he was the son of Russell and Pearl (Smith) Carson. On March 3, 1967, he married Gloria Newell in Damar. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State University. A lifetime resident of rural Barton County, he was employed by the Kansas Fish and Game Commission as a biologist.
HOISINGTON - Kirby Dean Ricke, 61, died Oct. 11, at Almost Home in Great Bend. Born July 2, 1953, in Alva, Okla., he was the son of Theodore Dean and Darlene (Huffman) Ricke. Kirby graduated in 1971 from Hoisington High School. He was active in both vocal music and band programs, excelling at the trumpet. HOISINGTON - Lila Jean Haberman, 80, died Oct. 11 at her daughter's home in Olmitz. She was born Jan. 22, 1934, in Galatia, the daughter of Henry and Martha (Steinert) Wagner. She married Jim Stoss on July 30, 1952. He died Dec. 25, 1979. She then married Larry Haberman on March 30, 1991. He died Dec. 8, 2006. Lila Jean was a resident of Hoisington, coming from Olmitz. Paul E. Dyer, 84, died Oct. 8 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 20, 1930, in Great Bend, he was the son of Homer and Katherine (Jones) Dyer. On Jan. 4, 1954, he married Julitta M. Elsen, in Great Bend. She died on March 12, 1995. He was a lifetime resident of Great Bend.
John D. Trimmer, 65, of Great Bend and formerly of Pawnee Rock and Dundee, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 8, at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. He was born on Feb. 11, 1949, at Belleville, to George Franklin and Edna Alene (Larr) Trimmer. He graduated from Republic County Schools in 1965 and was united in marriage to Diana Levingston on June 10, 1976, at Pawnee Rock. She died on July 22, 2013. John worked as a chain hand in the oilfield prior to his retirement. He enjoyed rock collecting, watching wrestling and spending time with family.
