CLAFLIN - Robert Bonomo, 69, died April 27 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 15, 1942, in Albuquerque, N.M., he was the son of John and Margaret (Miller) Bonomo. Robert graduated from Lovingston High School in New Mexico and went on to study at Edwards University in Austin, Texas, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Mexico. He then obtained his teaching certificate from San Diego State University and later attended Fort Hays State University to further his education. HOISINGTON - Lillian R. Funk, 88, died April 25 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Sept. 29, 1923, in Russell County, she was the daughter of J. Peter and Margaret (Deines) Boxberger. On Nov. 22, 1942, she married Raymond Funk in Milberger. He died on Sept. 12, 2000. A lifetime Russell and Barton County resident, she was a cook at Homestead Villa and then for Clara Barton Hospital, both in Hoisington, until her retirement. She enjoyed cooking, baking and decorating cakes, and gardening – especially caring for her plants and flowers.
ST. JOHN - Jean (Cadman) Astle, 87, died Apr. 25 at South Wind Hospice, Pratt. She was born June 3, 1924, at Moscow, Kan., the daughter of James H. and Ila F. (Lindsey) Cadman. She moved to St. John in 1964 where she was a homemaker and former aide for St. John Hospital.
HAYS - Craig Wayne Barnett Sr., 55, died April 24, 2012 at Hays Medical Center. Born Oct. 6, 1956 in Scott City, he was the son of Cecil Golden and Agness Lorine (Scott) Barnett. On April 4, 1981, he married Betty Elson in Oberlin. She died on Nov. 30, 2004. He later married Nicole Schneider. He attended Healy schools. He moved to Great Bend and worked in the Meat Packing Plant until moving to Gove in 1992 and driving a feed truck for Glenn Coberly Feed Yard. In 1997 he moved to Wakeeney and later moved to Hays. Louis Wintholz, 83, passed from this world to join his beloved wife Phyllis, in heaven on May 22, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Collyer, the son of Reinholdt "Ray" and Mary (Windholz) Wintholz. He attended school in Collyer and graduated from the Hays Cadets Academy in 1950. He married Phyllis Montgomery on May 8, 1954, at Hearndon. She passed away on Feb. 15, 2008.
Sister Marie Klein, 102, died May 21, 2015, in the Dominican Sisters' Convent Infirmary, Great Bend. Born April 25, 1913, in Fowler, as Mary Ann Agatha Klein, Sister Marie was the daughter of Anthony and Mary Helen (Hoffman) Klein. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community July 14, 1928, and pronounced her first vows August 17, 1931. She celebrated 80 years of religious profession in 2011.
GREENFIELD, Ind. - Marlin "Gene" Tammen, 79, passed away May 22, 2015, at Hancock Regional Hospital. Born on Dec.27, 1935, in Kansas City, Mo., he was the son of Herman Tammen and Gladys Tammen. In 1953, he graduated from Great Bend High School. He received his Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from Wichita State University. In October of 1956, he married Cheryl Loy (Foos). He held various positions in the Federal Government from 1962-1987, including Midwest Director of the Office of Personnel Management. LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Grace Imogene (Hathaway) Abel, 90, died May 12, 2015, at St. Rose Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born March 19, 1925, northwest of St. John, the daughter of John William and Reno (Kanzleiter) Hathaway.
LARNED - Walter (Mac) Fox, 92, passed away May 20, 2015, at Diversicare of Larned. Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Larned, he was the son of Walter M. and Gladys Strader Fox. On Dec. 15, 1946, he married Dorothy D. Goldsmith in Wichita. She passed away on May 16, 2013. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer, worked at Larned State Hospital as the plumbing shop foreman for 32 years and also worked at Boeing for one year before going in the service.
