ELLINWOOD - Rob Zimmerman, 54, died Feb. 13, 2012 at his home in Ellinwood. Born July 17, 1957 in Ellinwood, he was the son of Robert M. Zimmerman and Beverly A. Blehm Zimmerman. He graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1975 and attended Salina Vo-Tech. On Feb. 17, 1995 he married Tammy Bownes in Las Vegas, Nev. A long-time resident of Ellinwood, he was an oilfield truck for Duke Drilling, hay hauler for Mike Ringwald, and employed by Fastrack Trucking in Raymond.
HAYS - Dennis E. Harper, 67, died Feb. 10, 2012 at the St. John's of Hays Nursing Home.

RUSSELL - Donald (Don) Eugene Fosdick, 58, of Russell, died Feb. 9 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born Nov. 24, 1953, in Ellinwood, the son of Donald T. and Geraldine K. (Cope) Fosdick. He grew up in the Great Bend area and graduated from Great Bend High School in 1972. He was a welder and was the owner and operator of Western Welders in Oklahoma for over 15 years. Robert D. "Bob" Engle died on Feb. 9 at Ellinwood District Hospital in Ellinwood. He was born on Dec. 25, 1929, in Ransom, to Oscar V. and Florence E. (Combest) Engle.
OVERLAND PARK - Herb "Herbo" Freidenberger, 92, formerly of Hutchinson and Dunedin, Fla., passed away on Jan. 31, 2012 in Overland Park. Born on July 3, 1919, in Otis, he was the son of Sophie (Kindsvater) and George Freidenberger. On June 18, 1939, he married Marguerite Mendenhall in Hutchinson. She died Feb. 19, 2005. Herb retired in 1981, after a 43-year career from the Dillon Companies. After retiring to Florida, Herb attended Clown School and dedicated the next 25 years to making people laugh and smile as "Herbo" the Clown.
Bob D. Post, 88, died Feb. 7 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita. Born Feb. 20, 1923, at Winfield, he was the son of Walter Eden and Clara Louesa (Barritt) Post. He married Karen Healzer Wagner on June 5, 1970, at Great Bend. He was a driver and warehouseman for Great Bend Candy and Tobacco Co., and was an artist and retired from USD 428 as a custodian at Jefferson Elementary School.
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Gary Dean Southard, born George Gary Dean Southard on Jan. 16, 1935, passed away on Jan. 24 at Broward General Medical Center with family at his bedside, from complications of heart disease. A resident of Coral Springs, Fla., since 1978, he was born in Hutchinson and raised in Great Bend. Before coming to Great Bend, his family followed their father in the oil fields in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Gary graduated from Great Bend High School.
ULYSSES - Fred Lock, 95, died Feb. 5 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses. Born Aug. 24, 1916, in Barton County, he was the son of Henry and Magdalena (Mai) Lock. He attended Blood Creek School District 85 and graduated in 1935 from Otis Rural High School Otis. On Sept. 4, 1938, he married Ethel Lenora Brack in Great Bend. She died Sept. 30, 2009. A resident of Ulysses since 1954, he was the plant manager for Producer's Gas Company in Barton County, and then a gas well operator for Kansas Natural Gas for 42 years.
ELLINWOOD - Florence Wilhelm Veach, 96, died Feb. 7 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. Born Jan. 23, 1916, in Galatia, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Magdelena Dietz Karst. On Jan. 9, 1938, she married August Wilhelm in Galatia. He died on May 18, 1976. She then married George Veach on Aug. 30, 1981, in Ellinwood. He died in 1985. A resident of Hebron, Neb., for the past several years, formerly of Ellinwood and Galatia, she was a secretary for Bosse Elevators in Ellinwood and a homemaker.
HUTCHINSON - Charles T. "Chuck" Bowman, 72, of Hutchinson, died Feb. 6 at Pine Village in Moundridge. He was born Dec. 12, 1939, at Great Bend, the son of James Orlin and Myrtle Mae Seaman. He grew up and attended school in Garden City, but graduated from Dodge City High School in 1957. He married Mathilda H. Schartz on Aug. 7, 1965, in Larned. He began working at Cessna Fluid Power in 1965, and retired at Eaton Corp. as network administrator in 1999.
Annabelle N. Spencer, 74, died Feb. 6 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born July 15, 1937, in Goessell, she was the daughter of Russell Everett and Frances Jane (Parsons) Wenger. A Great Bend resident since 1993, coming from Wichita, she was a cook at Scott County Hospital and Clara Barton Hospital.
William Edward "Ed" Kirk, 89, died Feb. 5, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita. Born Oct. 6, 1922, at Kansas City, Kan., he was the son of William G. and Shirley M. (King) Kirk. He married Margaret A. Schweder on Aug. 22, 1949, in Kansas City, Kan. They were married 56 years, until her passing on Nov. 11, 2005. He retired in 1987 as general manager of Great Bend Commonwealth Theatres and was a former manager of theaters in Hoisington, Pratt, Liberal and Lawrence. LARNED - Gerald P. (Short) Penka, 62, passed away Jan. 11, 2015, at his home in Norwood, Mass., following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

LARNED - Mary Beth Herrmann, 59, died on Feb. 18, at Diversicare of Larned. Born Feb. 23, 1955, in Kinsley, she was the daughter of Quentin J. and Lucy W. Tholen Herrmann. She graduated from Barton County Community College with an A.A. in Nursing and from Barclay College with a B.S. in Business Administration. A lifetime area resident, she was a Registered Nurse and Administrator at the Pawnee County Health Department.

BISON - Ella Marie Steitz was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Bison in Rush County, the daughter of Jacob and Ella (Schaumburg) Scheuerman. She was adopted and raised by her parents, Constain and Florence (Scheuerman) Steitz. She graduated from Bison High School in 1952 and attended Fort Hays College. After living in Denver, Colo. for 31 years, she retired from Shell Chemical and returned to Bison in 1988.
Kenneth Dean Likes, 82, died Feb 15 at Hospice House of Reno County, Hutchinson. Born Sept. 1, 1932,at Brownell, he was the son of William Bryan and Mary Tee (Smotherman) Likes.
Lyle J. Lang, 73, died Feb. 15, at his home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 15, 1942, in Great Bend, he was the son of Frank and Gertrude (Eckert) Lang. On Oct. 24, 1966, he married Nancy Weber in Great Bend. They later divorced. A lifetime area resident, he was a truck driver for Meadow Gold Dairy, Santa Fe Trucking and Kansas Brick and Tile.
