HUTCHINSON - Virgie Margaret Goerl, 88, died Oct. 5, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born Oct. 9, 1922, in Chase, she was the daughter of John Godfried and Mary Elizabeth Hoover Dressel. Virgie was a 1940 graduate of Chase High School. She taught for two years at the Sunnyside Grade School after graduating from Chase High School. After teaching, she worked at both Dillons and Swift and Company in Lyons. On August 1, 1948, she married Vincent Kenneth Goerl in Lyons. He died Feb. 3, 2001.

He was born Sept. 16, 1972 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the beloved son of Anthony D. and Nancy C. (Roth) Wutka. Andrew spent his childhood in Fishkill, N.Y., Burlington, Vt., and Coral Springs, Fla. In 1990, he graduated from Taravella High School in Coral Springs. He attended the University of North Florida. In November 1992, he joined the Navy. Solomon "Sam" Maier, 103, died Jan. 18, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 3, 1911, in rural Barton County, he was the son of Henry Jacob and Anna Marie (Daubert) Maier. On Sept. 24, 1947, he married Betty Jo Mangum in Lubbock, Texas. She died on Dec. 7, 2000. A resident of Great Bend since 1964, coming from rural Susank, he worked for Producers Gas Company, retiring in 1976. He enjoyed fishing, and pheasant, dove and rabbit hunting.

She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Lincoln. On Jan. 27, 1961, she married Carl Lee Bryant in Lincoln. A longtime resident of Hoisington, she was employed for 17 1/2 years as a CNA on the night shift at Cheyenne Meadows Nursing Home. She and her husband both shared a love of fishing.
