STAFFORD - Donald L. Nagel, 57, died May 9 at Stafford County Hospital in Stafford. He was born May 31, 1953, the son of Albert and Marcena (Labbe) Nagel.
IUKA – Charles LeRoy 'Chuck' Backman, 79, died Tuesday, May 10, at South Wind Hospice Home in Pratt. He was born April 9, 1932 in Cleburne, the son of Wallace Theodore and Ethel (Johnson) Backman. On Jan. 22, 1956 he married Sondra G. 'Sandy' Strait. She preceded him in death on May 4, 1997. On July 4, 2001 he married Mary Ann 'Frostie' (Frost) Russell, she survives.
John William "Papa John" Skinner, 78, died on May 10 at Kansas Medical Center, Andover. He was born Oct.1, 1932, at Baxter, Mo., the son of Wesley Alexander and Thelma Irene (Reinecke) Skinner.
RUSSELL - Eugene A. Nuss, 82, died May 10 from injuries sustained in an accident. Born March 16, 1929, in Russell County, he was the son of Edward and Amelia (Karst) Nuss. On Oct. 4, 1953, he married Velda M. Keil in Milberger. A lifelong resident of Russell County, he was a farmer and former employee of Karst Construction.
HOISINGTON - Joan Nuss, 86, died May 10 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born March 18, 1925, in Bessemer, Mich., she was the daughter of Guy and Angela (Larese) Marzari. On April 10, 1948, she married Glen W. Nuss in Hoisington. He died March 21, 2006. A Hoisington resident for 50 years, she worked for USD 431 as a teachers aid.
RUSSELL - Harvey John Miller, 95, of Russell, died on Sunday at the Russell Regional Hospital Emergency Room. Born on Sept. 2, 1915, in Bushton, he was the son of George B. and Anna L. (Miller) Miller. During his childhood, he grew up in Bushton and graduated from Bushton High School in 1934. After high school he attended Wichita Business College and after graduating Business College he took correspondence courses in higher accounting. GREAT BEND - Evelyn L. Moore, 94, died May 5 at Holiday Resort in Salina. She was born Sept. 11, 1916 at McPherson, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Clear Thacker.
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Margaret M. Cooper, 89, of Colorado Springs, Colo., passed away May 3, at Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care after a brief stay. She was born Jan. 14, 1922, in Great Bend, to Edgar F. and Bridget May (McGinty) Leeper and was a graduate of Radium High School in Radium. She married Glenn E. Cooper of St. John, on July 15, 1942. She was a retired credit manager for Diamond Lumber Company and a loving homemaker. She loved her family and many friends and enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies and the Denver Nuggets.
James C. Burnette, 77, died Oct. 20 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 6, 1937 at Salina, he was the son of Cecil Marion and Stella M. (Lackey) Burnette.
KINSLEY - J. Craig Heinz, 66, died Oct. 17, at Hays Medical Center. Born Oct. 23, 1947, in Spearville, he was the son of Jim and Rosemary (McKillip) Heinz. He was a Finance Controller.
BEATRICE, Neb. - Karen L. Kirkpatrick, 88 years and 27 days of age, passed away at her home Saturday morning, Oct. 18th. She was born on Sept. 20, 1926, in Hoisington, to Duke and Opal (Sypolt) Van Brimmer. Karen was a 1944 graduate of Hoisington High School and attended Wichita State University for two years. Karen and William Kirkpatrick were married on May 7, 1948, in Hoisington. She then taught school at a rural school near Great Bend from 1949-1950. BRYAN, Texas - Lucio Armando Cano, 54, passed away Oct. 15. Born March 1, 1960, in Mexico, he was the son of Guadalupe (Montes) Cano. Armando was a loving soul and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
LARNED - Dale Otte, 76, passed away Oct. 17, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Born Jan. 4, 1938, in Great Bend, he was the son of Wilmer and Leah Dorfshaffer Otte. A longtime area resident he was a farmer/stockman. On Sept. 16, 1956, he married Karen Rice in Great Bend. She survives.

PAWNEE ROCK - Laura Jean Miller, 86, passed away Oct. 9, at her home in Pawnee Rock. Born June 19, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was the daughter of Horace B. and Laura Crawford Rogers. On April 28, 1992, she married Edward W. Miller in Littleton, Colo. He passed away on Nov. 27, 2008. She was a homemaker.

John was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on May 23, 1933, and worked briefly in the Merchant Marines before beginning a distinguished career in the industrial gas business. Beginning with a hydrogen plant in Painesville, Ohio in 1957, John was involved in a number of national and international helium projects where he earned a reputation as the foremost expert in the production of helium. RUSSELL - Richard Henry Dumler, 88, found peace on Oct. 14, after a long battle with multiple illnesses. At the time of his death, he lived at Rose Estates assisted living in Overland Park. Born on April 19, 1926, in Russell, he was the son of Henry and Agnes Dumler. His mother later married Ted Gariepy. He attended high school in Russell, where he was a sports star. There he met cheerleader Betty Joanne Kilian. He entered the service in 1944, serving in the United States Army Air Force until 1945. He married Betty Jo on June 1, 1947.

Reymundo Martinez, 27, passed away on Oct. 11, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born on Dec. 29, 1986, in Garden City, he was the son of Martin Martinez and Lupe (Rubio) Martinez. He moved to Great Bend, at an early age and worked construction with his godfather, Arturo Escamilla.

Born Jan. 13, 1964, in Ransom, she was the daughter of Donald and Ruby (Armer) Popp. She attended elementary school at Pawnee Rock, and in 1982, graduated from Hoisington High School.
