Marge M. Watkins 1921 - 2015

Marge M. Watkins, 93, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 8, at Almost Home, Inc. in Great Bend. Born Aug. 30, 1921, in Dodge city, she was the daughter of Fred and Anna May (Lewis) Cummins. On Oct. 3, 1938, she married Henry F. Watkins in Dodge City. He died on Feb. 25, 1991. She and her husband owned Westlawn Salvage until 1956, when they moved to Great Bend. They then opened their new business, A & A Iron & Metal. She loved fishing, hunting, gardening, bowling, and bingo.

Ralph L. Stalcup 1928 - 2015

Ralph L. Stalcup, 86, died Jan. 7, 2015, at Locust Grove, La Crosse. He was born June 5, 1928, at Great Bend, to Arthur A. and Amy (Gates) Stalcup. He married Mary Katheryn "Pollie" Clevenger May 9, 1953, at Hutchinson. She died Feb. 28, 2009. A Great Bend resident since 1976, coming from the Seward area, he was a farmer and stockman and was president of Globe Operating Inc.

Gloria Leon, 65, died Jan. 7, 2015, at her home in Great Bend. Born Oct. 25, 1949, in Great Bend she was the daughter of Sextos and Irene (Weiss) Leon. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was a dishwasher at the Highland Manor. She enjoyed music and dances.

ELLINWOOD - Thecla Graf (Tex) Hammersmith, 94, joined the angels in heaven on Jan. 6, 2015. Born Dec. 14, 1920, in Victoria, she was the daughter of Alex P. and Anna Marie Graf. On Sept. 12, 1938, she married Eugene E.(Dutch) Hammersmith in Gorham. A resident of Ellinwood since 1979, she was a homemaker. She enjoyed Bingo, playing cards, and visiting with friends at the Heritage Senior Center. She was an avid fisherman in her younger days.

Darlene Ann Biggs, 79, died Jan. 5, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 12, 1935, in Groton, S.D., she was the daughter of Clarence and Bessie (Eikanas) Craig. On March 26, 1956, she married Daniel Noah "Danny" Biggs at Kingman. He died July 14, 2008. She attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, S.D., and was a third and fourth grade teacher in Faith, S.D. She was a resident of Great Bend since 1962, coming from Kingman.

WOODWARD, OKLA. - Eleanor Joan (Gallaugher) Parks, 78, of Woodward, Okla., died Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Woodward Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 3, 1936 at Medicine Lodge, she was the daughter of William James Gallaugher and Edith Frances (Osborn) Gallaugher. On April 17, 1959 she married Ronald K. Parks in Enid, Okla. He survives.

A resident of Great Bend since 1983, coming from San Jose, Calif., she was a retired grocery clerk. On June 1, 1945, she married Glenden Earl Homer in San Francisco, Calif. He preceded her in death.

Martin George Robl, D.V.M., M.S., Ph.D, died on Dec. 31. Born to George and Loretta Robl in Ellinwood, he was the youngest of four children, 'Sonny'. He met the love of his life, Rosalie 'his' Darling Hochanadel in 1957, and they were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1960. They celebrated 54 years of marriage together.

LARNED - Peggy J. Thompson, 61, passed away Jan. 19, 2015 at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita. Born July 6, 1953, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of John H. and Marjorie Wagner Niewald. On Dec. 17, 1983, she married Kelly Thompson. They later divorced. A longtime area resident, she worked at the Larned State Hospital for 23 ½ years as a LMHT.

On April 20, 1949, she married Frank W. Axman in Odin. He died on May 17, 1994. Joseph John Zecha, 89, died Jan. 21, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 25, 1925, in Claflin, he was the son of Emil R. and Mary Theresa (Kinzel) Zecha. A Great Bend resident for the past year and half, living in Denver, Colo. for 50 years, he was an auto mechanic for Montgomery Ward, retiring in 1990. He was a fine example of charity to almost everyone he met, befriending numerous persons in need throughout his life. He was an animal lover, especially dogs.

Solomon "Sam" Maier, 103, died Jan. 18, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 3, 1911, in rural Barton County, he was the son of Henry Jacob and Anna Marie (Daubert) Maier. On Sept. 24, 1947, he married Betty Jo Mangum in Lubbock, Texas. She died on Dec. 7, 2000. A resident of Great Bend since 1964, coming from rural Susank, he worked for Producers Gas Company, retiring in 1976. He enjoyed fishing, and pheasant, dove and rabbit hunting.

She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Lincoln. On Jan. 27, 1961, she married Carl Lee Bryant in Lincoln. A longtime resident of Hoisington, she was employed for 17 1/2 years as a CNA on the night shift at Cheyenne Meadows Nursing Home. She and her husband both shared a love of fishing.

William Francis "Bill" Maneth, 81, died Jan. 16, 2015, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 13, 1933, at Great Bend, the son of William Leo and Mary Teresa (Mauler) Maneth. He married Kay Ellen Dorfshaffer Aug. 24, 1957, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he worked for various retail firms around Great Bend as a counter parts man, retiring from Great Bend Farm Equipment in 1996.
