F. Duane Dugan, 90, died Jan. 1, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born July 11, 1926, at Fort Scott, he was the son of Harry and Frances (Pellett) Dugan. He married Roberta Simpson Sept. 17, 1955, at Fort Scott. A Great Bend resident since January 1965, coming from Fort Scott, Mr. Dugan worked in law enforcement for 57 years.
Mary A. McKay, 95, passed away peacefully Dec. 20, 2016. She was born to Herb and Faye Clowers in St. John, on Oct. 18, 1921, and grew up on a farm near Zook. After graduating Zook High School, Mary completed nurse's training at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, and joined the Army Nurse Corp in 1942. She served in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines during WWII, where she met David J. McKay. They were married on Jan. 30, 1946.
HOISINGTON - David G. Zamarripa, 64, died Dec. 30, 2016, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born Dec. 19, 1952, in Edinburg, Texas, the son of Juan and Elisa (Gonzalez) Zamarripa. David graduated from Edinburg High School and then received his business accounting degree from the University of Texas-Pan American. He served in the United States Army from 1972 to 1978.
OVERLAND PARK - Frances (Rosander) Burns, 99, died Dec. 18, 2016, in Overland Park. Born Aug. 14, 1917, in Lindsborg she was the daughter of Emil and Ellen Rosander. She graduated from Bethany College, where she was an active debater. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage. Frances and her husband, Allen Burns, moved to Great Bend after World War II, and she spent nearly 30 years teaching elementary school students there and being involved in educational, church, and community organizations.
Neil J. Gorney, age 55 years, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away at his home in Great Bend on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 29, 2016. Neil was born on Feb. 10, 1961 in Bay City, Michigan to Melvin J. and Isabelle (Compton) Gorney.
WICHITA - Joy Louise Reed departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, peacefully in her home surrounded by close family and friends. Joy was born Aug. 21, 1929, near Laverne, Oklahoma. She graduated from St. John High School and met Delbert Reed. Joy and Delbert were married June 6, 1948.
HOISINGTON – Jan Ogle, 79, died Dec. 27, 2016, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. Born March 18, 1937, at Grant County, Ind., she was the daughter of Rev. Dr. Carl M. and Mary Frances (Deal) Poe. She married the Rev. C. DeLon Hales Nov. 1, 1957, at First Church of God in Chicago. He died Dec. 5, 1972. She then married the Rev. Richard E. "Dick" Ogle Sept. 22, 1973, at Great Bend.
LA CROSSE - Rosanna Herrman, 89, formerly of Sylvan Grove, passed away Dec. 25, 2016, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse. Born April 15, 1927, in Liebenthal she was the daughter of Michael and Frances (Kreutzer) Legleiter. She was baptized, received her First Holy Communion, and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Liebenthal. She also attended grade school at St. Joseph's School in Liebenthal. On May 14, 1945, she married Balser "Bill" Herrman at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Liebenthal. He preceded her in death.
RUSSELL - Isabelle D. (Brack) Untereiner, 84, passed away Dec. 27, 2016, at the Golden Living Center in Wilson. Born Nov. 10, 1932, in Otis she was the daughter of Samuel and Elma (Dumler) Brack. On June 24, 1952 she married Frank W. Untereiner in Milberger. He preceded her in death on May 27, 2008. She was a homemaker, babysitter, waitress, and worked at the church.
James Joseph Leon, 59, died Dec. 25, 2016, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born Sept. 7, 1957, at Great Bend, he was the son of Encarnacion G. "Mario or Shorty" and Elizabeth (Gomez) Leon. A long time Great Bend resident, he was a clerk at Wal-Mart.
LARNED - Michael (Mike) A. Giles, 67, passed away Dec. 23, 2016, at Country Living of Larned. Born May 11, 1949, in Stafford he was the son of Benjamin M. and LaVera Schartz Giles. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer, rancher and a commodities broker. He loved the simple life and lived on his own terms. He enjoyed being outside on a Kansas farm, loved dogs, riding his motorcycle and frequently talked about how proud he was to be a Dad and Grandpa. WILSON - Eugene "Gene" Neal Peterka, 79, passed away Dec. 23, 2016, at Russell Regional Hospital surrounded by his family. Born Aug. 26, 1937, on the family farm in Lincoln County, he was the son of Victor and Theresa (Farney) Peterka. He grew up and attended the Margaret one room school house and Wilson High School.
