SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. - Velma Eloise "Toots" Cooper, 94, of South Sioux City, Neb. died March 24, 2011 at a Sioux City hospital. Toots was born July 3, 1916 in Anthony, the daughter of Robert Forrest and Nora Mae (Potter) Jones.

GORHAM - Alverta R. Bosch, 95. died March 24, at Smith County Care Center in Smith Center. Born on June 28, 1915 near Galatia, she was the daughter of Sam and Martha (Brack) Moore. She was a farm wife.
GREAT BEND - Garin Dean Arnold was born at 7:09 p.m. March 18 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He weighed 3 pounds 8 ounces and was 16 inches long. After meeting his mommy and daddy, Garin went directly to the NICU. In his time, he was amazingly cared for by his nurses and doctors.
NEWTON - Richard A. Schmidt, 83, died March 27. Born Sept. 7, 1927 at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, he was the son of August and Esther K. (Schmidt) Schmidt. He attended school in Meno, Okla. In 1948 he graduated from Bethel College. The next two years were spent in a flour mill laboratory in Minneapolis, Minn. He returned to Bethel College taking education classes and became a certified public school teacher. He helped build the new Bethel College Mennonite Church. SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - Joette Lindsten Carmona went home to heaven on Dec. 17, 2010. She was ready to see her saviour, Jesus, and her best friend, her mother, Velma. Joette was born Sept. 22, 1950 in Goodland, to John W. and Velma E. (Peter) Lindsten with St. Francis as her childhood home. Three years later, to Joette's delight, her twin sisters, Joyce and Janice, were born. VICTORIA - James R. "Jim" Kuhn, 63, died Thursday, March 24, at St. John's Health Care Center in his hometown of Victoria.
MACKSVILLE - Eldon Ernest Lutz, 79, died March 24 at the Stafford County Hospital. The son of Ernest Franklin and Kathryn Alice (Brenn) Lutz, he was born Nov. 1, 1931 in rural St. John. Eldon was a resident of Macksville since 1982 and formerly of St. John, where he farmed. On June 15, 1951, he married Delores (Yarmer) at Great Bend, and he then married Betty J. (Freeman) DeGarmo on Apr. 2, 1982 at Macksville. She survives of the home. His memberships include Macksville Christian Church and the VFW. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mildred Oleta Elliott, 94, died March 24, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 5, 1917 in Medford, Okla., she was the daughter of John Wesley and Lillie Belle (Wykes) Wisehart. On June 12, 1932 she married Harry W. Elliott in Hays. He died Dec. 24, 1997. A Great Bend resident since 1938, coming from Ransom, she was a secretary for the Barton County Courthouse and the County Superintendent of Schools.
Barbara Kay Clark, 70, died March 23 at her home in Great Bend. Born Sept. 17, 1940 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Howard and Betty (Alderson) Bangerter. On May 12, 1964 she married Joseph A. Clark in Colorado Springs, Colo. He died in 1997. A Great Bend resident for four years, coming from Wichita, she was a retired self-employed accountant.
PHILLIPSBURG - Tamera Lynn Wagner, 38, of Phillipsburg died Tuesday, March 22 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
FORT MCCOY,FLA. - Mr. Leroy "Bill" Maddox, 83, of Ft. McCoy, Fla., passed away on March 19, at his son's home in Williston, FlA. He was born in Laurel, Miss. and moved to Ft. McCoy, Fla. in 1979 from Miami, Fla., where he retired following 32 years of service as a supervisor for Southern Bell Telephone. Bill loved fishing and hunting, loved gardening and traveling and loved tinkering around his home.

HOISINGTON - Eugene H. Bitter, 84, died Feb. 22, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. Born March 30, 1930, on the family farm near Susank, he was the son of Julius and Emilie (Schmidt) Bitter. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, Eugene was a farmer, stockman and fisherman.
ALBERT - LoRay D. George, 83, died Feb. 21, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in La Crosse. Born Sept. 1, 1931, in rural Albert he was the son of Herman "H. D." and Hilda "A. C." (Tammen) George. On Aug. 21, 1959, he married Anna Mae Wheeler at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert. She preceded him in death Feb. 3, 2002. A lifelong resident of Rush County he was a farmer.
LARNED - Larry L. Fleske, 55, passed away Feb. 20, at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born Oct. 9, 1959, in Great Bend, he was the son of Walter W. and Rena J. Eveleigh Fleske. On Jan. 14, 1989, he married Sharon L. Horne in Great Bend. She survives. A lifetime area resident of Larned he was farmer/stockman.
LARNED - Gerald P. (Short) Penka, 62, passed away Jan. 11, 2015, at his home in Norwood, Mass., following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

LARNED - Mary Beth Herrmann, 59, died on Feb. 18, at Diversicare of Larned. Born Feb. 23, 1955, in Kinsley, she was the daughter of Quentin J. and Lucy W. Tholen Herrmann. She graduated from Barton County Community College with an A.A. in Nursing and from Barclay College with a B.S. in Business Administration. A lifetime area resident, she was a Registered Nurse and Administrator at the Pawnee County Health Department.

BISON - Ella Marie Steitz was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Bison in Rush County, the daughter of Jacob and Ella (Schaumburg) Scheuerman. She was adopted and raised by her parents, Constain and Florence (Scheuerman) Steitz. She graduated from Bison High School in 1952 and attended Fort Hays College. After living in Denver, Colo. for 31 years, she retired from Shell Chemical and returned to Bison in 1988.
