Gerald J. "Jerry" Christiansen, 84, died Jan. 18 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. He was born June 13, 1926, at Barton County, the son of Ralph and Elsie (Ewing) Christiansen. He married Alice Nadine Amerine on July 14, 1946, at Great Bend. She died Dec. 12, 2010. He was a mechanic for Manweiler Chevrolet and later opened Jerry's Repair. He was a lifetime Great Bend resident.
LIBERAL - Georgia (Tyne) Valerius, 86, died Jan. 19 at her residence in Liberal. She was born July 30, 1924, in Jonesboro, Ark., the daughter of George and Ella (Gray) Munger. She married Arthur Gray (Bud) Valerius on Feb. 14, 1948, in Hoisington. He passed away July 31, 1979.
NEWTON - Marjorie I. Gunn Price, 91, of Newton, died Jan. 17 at Presbyterian Manor in Newton. She was born April 14, 1919, in Great Bend, the daughter of Lee and Lydia (Appel) Wells. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1938. On. Nov. 5, 1939, she married Richard "Dick" H. Gunn in Hutchinson. They moved to Newton in the early '60s, and he passed away in 1975.
HUTCHINSON - Elden M. Dutschmann, 85, died Jan. 17 at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born May 20, 1925, the son of Paul C. and Dora Ida Schultz Dutschmann. A World War II veteran, he was a staff sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, where he received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
Donald V. Fabricius, 80, died Jan. 18 at Kansas Medical Center in Andover. He was born Aug. 26, 1930, at Graham County, the son of Victor and Alice (Chalfant) Fabricius. He married Rosalie P. "Rosie" Billinger Sept. 26, 1959, at St. Anthony Catholic Church at St. Peter. He was owner and operator of Arrow Testing, and had been a Great Bend resident since 1962.
SKIPPACK, Pa. - Arlen David Eichman, 70, died in Skippack, Pa. on Dec. 28, 2010. He was born in WaKeeney on Dec. 6, 1940, and was the adoptive son of Jacob and Clara (Deines) Eichman of Hoisington. Arlen grew up in Hoisington and was a 1958 graduate of Hoisington High School and a 1965 graduate of Bethany College in Lindsborg, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in music. LYONS - Edna Manke, 98, died Jan. 15 at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. Born Jan. 22, 1912, in rural Ellinwood, she was the daughter of William A. and Henrietta Lantermann Koch. A resident of Lyons since 1967, formerly of Bushton, she was a homemaker. She graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1928. On June 12, 1929, she married Leo F. Manke in Ellinwood. He died September 27, 1994.
ELLINWOOD - Robert B. Reser, 89, died Jan. 16 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation, Great Bend. He was born Feb. 1, 1921, at Caney, the son of Frank Byron and Mattie Fern Condor Reser. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1940. He married Betty Lou Elliott on April 23, 1944, at Denver, Colo. She died Sept. 21, 1992. A longtime Ellinwood resident, formerly of Bushton, he was owner of the former Reser Welding & Repair of Ellinwood.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Louise Weide Zook died Dec. 20, 2010, in Los Angeles, Calif. She was born in Great Bend in 1923, the daughter of Rose and August Weide. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1941 and worked at Duckwall's prior to three years on the Draft Board.
KINSLEY - Virginia Polson, 80, died unexpectedly at home in Kinsley on Jan. 13. She was born July 27, 1930, at Rozel, the daughter of Carl E. and Hulda Edlund Polson. A resident of Kinsley, formerly of Rozel, she was a homemaker.
GARFIELD – Leta Viva Nelson, 98, died Jan. 13 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned. She was born Sept. 26, 1912, at Rozel, the daughter of Edgar and Hattie Steeley Van Eaton. On Oct. 29, 1932, she married Carl "Aaron" Nelson at Wichita. He died Nov. 2, 1985. A former resident on a farm between Newton and Wichita, moving to a farm in Leon in 1942, and then to a farm in Garfield in 1947, she was the Pawnee County lunch room supervisor for Ft. Larned School District 495.
GLADSTONE, Mo. - Velma Lorene Tiede, 85, died Jan. 13 at her home in Gladstone, Mo. She was born Dec. 18, 1925, at Verona, Mo., the daughter of Charlie and Maude (Browning) Shue. She married Richard E. Tiede on Dec. 8, 1947, at Eureka Springs, Ark. He died Oct. 28, 1976. She worked for Smith International as a secretary. Mrs. Tiede was a Gladstone resident for 16 years, coming from Great Bend, where she resided for 35 years.
HOISINGTON - M. "Joyce" Steiner died Jan. 11 at McCrite Plaza Retirement Community, Topeka. She was born in Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of Harry Isaac and Thelma (Kite) Brooks. She married James John Steiner May 7, 1976, at Hoisington. He died June 26, 1991. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator. She was a Topeka resident since 2009, coming from Hoisington.
FRANKTOWN, COLO. - Robert E. Lee Hartman Sr., 88, died Jan. 2 at his rural home Franktown, Colo. Born April 3, 1922, on the family farm in South Bend Township, just south of Great Bend, he was the son of Edgar and Gertrude Wilson Hartman. He attended Barton County schools and was a 1938 graduate of Great Bend High School. He married Dorothy McCosh Petty on Oct. 8, 1948. She preceded him in death on June 20, 1996.
LARNED - Peggy J. Thompson, 61, passed away Jan. 19, 2015 at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita. Born July 6, 1953, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of John H. and Marjorie Wagner Niewald. On Dec. 17, 1983, she married Kelly Thompson. They later divorced. A longtime area resident, she worked at the Larned State Hospital for 23 ½ years as a LMHT.
OLMITZ - Marilou Axman, 84, died Jan. 20, 2015 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Nov. 1, 1930, in Odin, she was the daughter of William and Eleanor (Hickel) Linsner. On April 20, 1949, she married Frank W. Axman in Odin. He died on May 17, 1994. A resident of Olmitz since 1949, coming from Odin, she was a retired nurses' aide, working for the Hoisington Hospital.
Joseph John Zecha, 89, died Jan. 21, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 25, 1925, in Claflin, he was the son of Emil R. and Mary Theresa (Kinzel) Zecha. A Great Bend resident for the past year and half, living in Denver, Colo. for 50 years, he was an auto mechanic for Montgomery Ward, retiring in 1990. He was a fine example of charity to almost everyone he met, befriending numerous persons in need throughout his life. He was an animal lover, especially dogs.
OLMITZ - Joseph E. Hlavaty, 77, died Jan. 19, 2015, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse. He was born Nov. 8, 1937, the son of Erwin J. and Clara Elizabeth (Riedel) Hlavaty. He married Justina Maneth Oct. 6, 1958, at La Crosse. A lifetime Olmitz resident, he was a dairy farmer and stockman and also the postmaster for Olmitz for 25 years.

SALINA - Matilda Pauline "Tillie" Hoth, 98, formally of Holyrood, died Jan. 18, 2015. Born Aug. 30, 1916, in Ellsworth County, she was the daughter of Fred and Anna (Kempke) Hoffman.
CLAFLIN - Garry L. Simpson, 60, died Jan 19, 2015, at his home in Claflin. Born July 18, 1954, in Columbia, N.C., he was the son of Howard and Beulah (Stevenson) Simpson. A resident of Claflin since 2002, coming from Roper, N.C., he was a nurse, working for Washington County Hospital and Central Kansas Medical Center, and formerly owned and operated Prairie House Flowers and Gifts.

Solomon "Sam" Maier, 103, died Jan. 18, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 3, 1911, in rural Barton County, he was the son of Henry Jacob and Anna Marie (Daubert) Maier. On Sept. 24, 1947, he married Betty Jo Mangum in Lubbock, Texas. She died on Dec. 7, 2000. A resident of Great Bend since 1964, coming from rural Susank, he worked for Producers Gas Company, retiring in 1976. He enjoyed fishing, and pheasant, dove and rabbit hunting.
HOISINGTON - Rose Marie Bryant, 73, died Jan. 17, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Jan. 7, 1942, in Chase, she was the daughter of George and Georgia (Moore) Bird. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Lincoln. On Jan. 27, 1961, she married Carl Lee Bryant in Lincoln. A longtime resident of Hoisington, she was employed for 17 1/2 years as a CNA on the night shift at Cheyenne Meadows Nursing Home. She and her husband both shared a love of fishing.
MCPHERSON - Jan Carpenter Sink, 79, wife, mother and grandmother, died Jan. 16, at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita. Born May 12, 1935, McPherson, she was the daughter of Fred D. and Evelyn M. (Sward) Carpenter. In 1953, she graduated from McPherson High School. On Jan. 28, 1956, she was united in marriage to Edwin L. Sink, Jr. in McPherson. He preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 1999. She had worked for State Farm Insurance and Tri-County Special Education Co-op, both in Independence, before retiring from Commerce Bank in Bonner Springs, and relocating to McPherson. HOLYROOD - Richard E. Johnson, 77, died Jan. 18, at his home. Born Oct. 18, 1937, in West Grove, Pa. he was the son of Samuel H. and Blanche A. Johnson. He grew up in Rising Sun, Md. On Aug. 30, 1958, he married Grace Wilkens Johnson in Lorraine. She survives. A resident of Holyrood since 2005, having moved from the farm 3 miles east of town, he was a farmer and rancher.
OTIS - Velma V. Stieben, 90, died Jan. 17, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse. Born May 28, 1924, in rural Galatia, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna M. (Koch) Miller. In 1942, she graduated from Otis Rural High School. On Aug. 29, 1943, she married Lester M. Stieben at Otis. He preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 2004. A lifelong resident of Rush County, she was a homemaker.
William Francis "Bill" Maneth, 81, died Jan. 16, 2015, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 13, 1933, at Great Bend, the son of William Leo and Mary Teresa (Mauler) Maneth. He married Kay Ellen Dorfshaffer Aug. 24, 1957, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he worked for various retail firms around Great Bend as a counter parts man, retiring from Great Bend Farm Equipment in 1996.
