WOODLAWN, TENN. - MSG (Ret.) Herman E. Cassity, 82, Woodlawn, Tenn., died Sept. 25 at his home. Born Dec. 10, 1927, in Bush City, he was the son of the late Wilmer and Esther Burlington Cassity. He retired as a Master Sergeant from the United States Army, where he belonged to the 101st Airborne Division. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Following his military service he retired once again from Civil Service Family Housing. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Faye Conatser Cassity.
George F. Esfeld, 83, died Sept. 27 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Feb. 24, 1927, at Great Bend, the son of Fred, Sr. and Frances (Monger) Esfeld. He married Gemella A. Gerstenkorn on Feb. 15, 1949, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. She died Nov. 2, 2008. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he worked for Clarke Well and Equipment as a field supervisor.
PRATT - Josephine M. Strohl, 89, died Sept. 26 at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. She was born Dec. 8, 1920, in St. Leo, the daughter of Edward N. and Emma (Armbruster) Freund. On Nov. 6, 1945, she married Richard 'Dick' Strohl in St. Leo. He preceded her in death. She had lived in Pratt since 1984, coming from St. Leo.
FAIRHOPE, Ala. - Ema Davis, 102, died Sept. 17 at her residence in Fairhope, Ala. She was born Jan. 26, 1908, in Hoisington, to Abraham and Lydia (Radke) Boger. After completing high school in Hoisington, she was encouraged to pursue the field of chiropractic medicine and enrolled in Colvin Chiropractic College in Wichita. Dorothy B. Essmiller, 89, died Sept. 19 at her home in Great Bend. Born June 1, 1921, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Harry and Ruby (Travis) LeRoy. On Aug. 3, 1941, she married Ralph Essmiller in Great Bend. He died Aug. 9, 1974. A lifetime resident of Great Bend she was a farm wife and bookkeeper for McDonald Tank and Equipment Company, Inc.
COLBY - Betty Elaine Fitzsimmons Sloan died peacefully at her home in Colby on Sept. 24. She was born April 18, 1924 to Ethyl Lene (Logan) and Everett Wallace Elmore in Rozel, Kansas. Betty attended Lewis Rural School and graduated in 1942. College was interrupted by World War II, and after attending KU, and Hutchinson Junior College, she was granted a Bachelor in Speech and English from Kansas State University in 1947. HOISINGTON - Dean Steiner, 78, died Thursday at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. He was born Dec. 3, 1931 at Hoisington, Kansas the son of Louis and Lenora (Ummel) Steiner. A longtime Hoisington resident, coming from Odin, Mr. Steiner was a retired employee of Kansas Wildlife and Parks at Cheyenne Bottoms, retiring in 1992. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
SHEBOYGAN FALLS WIS. - Opal L. (Koeller) Stahl, 79, of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., passed away on Sept. 21 at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center. Born on Oct. 27, 1930 in Ellinwood, she was the daughter of Ira and Anna (Kerkoska) Alexander. On May 31, 1949 she married William James Koeller in Great Bend. William preceded her in death in 1995. OTIS - Kenneth P. Brack, 90, died Sept. 22 at Rush County Nursing Home, La Crosse. He was born Aug. 21, 1920, at Otis, the son of Peter E. and Amelia (Horch) Brack Foos. He married Fern Marie Schlegel on April 21, 1946, at Otis. She died Dec. 21, 1993. An Otis and Rush County resident for 70 years, coming from Ness County, he was a retired farmer.
BURDETT - Emmett J. Bauer, 87, died Sept. 23 at Country Place Living, Larned. He was born July 25, 1923, in Burdett, the son of Philip J. and Frances R. (Mooney) Bauer. Jerry Lee "Elvis" Farmer Sr., 55 of Great Bend, died Sept. 21 at Promise Regional Hospital in Hutchinson.
