HOLYROOD - Marilyn A. Showalter, 74, passed away March 4, 2017, in Ellinwood. Born Dec. 29, 1942, in Ellsworth, she was the daughter of Gilbert and Caroline (Stoltenberg) Horejsi. On Dec. 26, 1964, she married Richard Showalter in Holyrood. A longtime resident of Ellsworth County, she received her bachelor's degree in education and was a teacher for a number of years and a homemaker. She also worked other odd jobs throughout her life. She painted houses, grew and maintained a large garden, did fire damage restoration, and did farm work.
HOISINGTON - Edward Allen Ruble, 97, died March 19, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born May 12, 1919, in Hoisington, he was the son of William Monroe and Blanche Grace (Clift) Ruble. In 1938 he graduated from Hoisington High School. He then worked in construction for the Works Progress Administration, helping to build Hoisington High School, before joining the Army. When returning home he worked in the oil fields for D.H. Cook and Company.
CLAFLIN - Vivian E. Grossardt, 94, died March 16, 2017 at The Good Samaritan Society Home, Ellsworth. She was born March 27, 1922 in Hoisington, the daughter of Paul and Rose (Müller) Radenberg. She was a lifelong Claflin resident. She was united in marriage to Harold Grossardt on Oct. 20, 1945, in Claflin. He passed away Aug. 10, 2000. She was a lifelong homemaker and farm wife.
Wilma Jean Schuster, 86, died March 11, 2017 at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born June 20, 1930, at St. John, the daughter of John William and Reno (Kanzleiter) Hathaway. She married Billy Eugene Schuster June 20, 1948, at Great Bend. She has been a resident of Great Bend since 1948 coming from St. John. She enjoyed genealogy, she also was a member of the Gemini Club. She was a clerk for Coast to Coast, ABC Drug and Triangle Drug Store.
James Preston (Jim) Davis, 67, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017. He was born Sept. 2, 1949, in Great Bend, the son of Robert and Winona (Young) Davis. James earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University. He went to work for his father at Davis Mud and Chemical of Great Bend and eventually became president of the company. James was also an engineer and conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad.
Karen L. Brown, 62, passed away on March 5, 2017, at the Hays Medical Center. Born Oct. 5, 1954, she was the daughter of Darold and Betty (Grimes) Mckinnis. On Oct. 20, 1972, she married David Brown at Lyons. This union was blessed with three sons. She was a homemaker, mother and grandmother.
MINNEAPOLIS - Earl B. "Bill" Cooper, 87, formerly of Chase, died Saturday, March 11, 2017, in Minneapolis, Kansas. Born Aug. 16, 1929, in Shawnee, Okla., he was the son of Arthur B. and Ina May (Phillips) Cooper. He was a graduate of Chase High School. On June 5, 1949, he was united in marriage to Norma J. Miller in Chase. He worked in the oil fields for many years and he retired from Thunderbird Drilling in 1994.
