Christine O. "Chris" Keeler, 78, died Oct. 2, 2016, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born July 2, 1938, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Donovan and Mary (Risse) Neeland. On. Aug. 6, 1960, she married Charles Keeler in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend she was a homemaker. She was an avid bridge player.
ORMOND BEACH Fla. - Reita A Dorei Powell, 80, died Sept. 21, 2016, at Ormond Beach, Fla. Born Oct. 18, 1935, in Mclouth, she was the daughter of Harold McAferty and Louise Boutwell McAferty. On Aug. 29, 1954, She married William Dorei at McLouth. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1993. She married Donald Powell on May 16, 1994. She was a McLouth resident and then a 20 year resident of Ormond-By-the-Sea. She was active in farming until 1993.
LARNED- Barbara J. Manka, 75, passed away Oct. 2, 2016 at Golden Living Center, Wilson. Born Dec. 5, 1940 in Larned, she was the daughter of John F. and Edna Firestone Arnold. A lifetime area resident she was a switch board operator for the Larned State Hospital and also worked at Southwestern Bell.
HAYS - Lawrence A. "Lon" Proffitt, 74, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, at the Las Colinas Medical Center in Irving, Texas. Born June 15, 1942, in St. Louis, Mo., he was the son of Joseph Martin Chiri and Marjorie (Finlay) Chiri - Proffitt.
Juanita May "Nita" Ratzlaff, 73, died Sept. 27, 2016, at her home in Great Bend. Born May 1, 1943, at Beldenville, Wis., she was the daughter of John and Mildred (Klein) Gilbertson. She was a waitress and manager of Hong Kong Restaurant and also had a painting business. She raised and showed Persian cats, and enjoyed cooking, gardening and yardwork.
Duane Lee Huntwork, 78, died Sept. 26, 2016, at Hays Medical Center. Born March 16, 1938, at Huron, S.D., he was the son of Ralph and Doris (Skinner) Huntwork. After their deaths, Duane was raised by his guardian-aunt, Bernice Forber and her husband Frank. On March 9, 1958, he married Margaret Ball at Severy. A Great Bend resident since 1974, coming from Wichita, he was a journeyman plumber for Peterson Mechanical. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and sports.
LARNED - Inez Leona (Birzer) Giessel, 90, passed away Sept. 29, 2016, at the Arbor Court Retirement Community in Topeka. She was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Rural Barton County, a mile east of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, north of Ellinwood, the 16th of 18 children born to Joseph and Mathilda (Beran) Birzer. She graduated from the eighth grade at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School. On Feb. 11, 1947, she married John Jacob Giessel and they began their life together on the farm northwest of Larned. He passed away April 13, 1985.
Joe Harold Spears, 54, died Sept. 24, 2016, at Great Bend. Born Feb. 27, 1962, at Yuma, Ariz., he was the son of John Leo and Helen (West) Spears. On April 1, he married Sheryl Miller at Great Bend. A Great Bend resident since 2005, coming from Mesa, Ariz., he was a truck driver and owned and operated J & S Handyman Service. He enjoyed truck driving, camping, fishing and hunting.
RUSSELL - Wilmer H. Boxberger, 90, passed away Sept. 24, 2016, at the Main Street Manor in Russell. Born Sept. 20, 1926, he was the son of Herman and Pauline (Funk) Boxberger. He attended schools in Russell, graduating with the class of 1944. On Oct. 26, 1947, he married Estella Deines at St. John Lutheran Church. He farmed and raised cattle through the years until the mid 1970's. Carolyn June Butts, 88, died Sept. 24, 2016, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 22, 1928, at Larned, she was the daughter of Ralph and Pearl Lena (Dirks) Unruh. On Aug. 15, 1946, she married Joseph Oral Butts at Great Bend. They later divorced. She was an LPN at Larned State Hospital.
KAHULUI, Hawaii - Mark Edward (Lane) Shaw, 62, of Kahului, Hawaii, passed away Aug. 31, 2016, at his home with loved ones by his side. He was born in Larned on Feb. 26, 1954. Mark attended high school in Great Bend, and graduated from Buhler High School in 1972. He then joined the Air Force, and was honorably discharged in 1974. Mark moved from Kansas to Phoenix, Ariz. where his three children were born and raised. Years later he moved to Kahului on the island of Maui and joined the staff of Dorvin D. Leis Co. as Chief Estimator.
DENVER, Colo. - Richard K. Marshall, 68, passed away Sept. 15, 2016. He was diagnosed with cancer in July. Born on Sept. 3, 1948, in Great Bend, Richard moved to Denver in 1971 after graduating from Kansas State University. He met his wife, Margaret, during the first month he arrived and they married in 1972. They have three children, Jonathan, Charles and Elizabeth. He was a landscape architect, planner and urban designer with over 40 years of experience throughout the United States.
