HAYS - Joanna Aubel Johnson, 78, died Nov. 28, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. Born March 3, 1936, in Uniontown, she was the daughter of Clifford and Addie (Swink) Typer. On March 29, 1986, she married William "Bill" Aubel in Hays. He died on Sept. 26, 2008. She married Toby Johnson on Aug. 7, 2010, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was a real estate broker and owner of Aubel Realty. She loved playing bridge, cooking, reading, traveling, and helping others.
OXFORD - Russell Junior Craven, 80, went to be with his Lord on Nov. 30 at Sumner Regional Medical Center. Russell "Junior" was born on a farm in Slate Valley on July 20, 1934 to Russell and Ora Mae Craven. Junior attended high school in Oxford. He worked at various oil rigs. He started his trucking career driving for A.V. Davis Van Lines. He retired with United Van Lines after 37 years of cross country driving. He later went to work for Price Trucking in Winfield. He was a member of Oxford First Baptist Church.
ELLINWOOD - Alma M. "Pinky" Lloyd, 82, died Nov. 27 at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born April 27, 1932, in Ellinwood, she was the daughter of Edward and Anna Marie Kowalsky Jenisch/Edna Schmidt Jenisch. She graduated from high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita. On Oct. 26, 1953, she married Leslie J. Lloyd in Ellinwood. He died on March 5, 1991. A lifetime resident of Ellinwood, she was a retired bookkeeper for the Great Bend COOP in Ellinwood.
LARNED - Edward Wayne Hesher, 86, passed away Nov. 28, at Diversicare of Larned. Born Dec. 1, 1927, in Gypsum, he was the son of Bert and Dorris Hawthorne Hesher. On April 20, 1952, he married Patricia L. Turpin in Kansas City, Mo. She survives. Moving from Topeka to Larned in 1952, he was an Accountant/Business Manager for the State of Kansas.
Dink Everett Garner, 94, died Nov. 27, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 22, 1920, in Eufaula, Okla., he was the son of Dink G. and Nora E. (Collie) Garner. On Dec. 31, 1947, he married Betty Lorraine Johnson in Great Bend. She died on July 19, 2011. A resident of Great Bend most of his life, he was a Dairy Department Manager for Dillons, retiring in 1983.
CLAFLIN - Lawrence J. Jenisch, 73, died Nov. 26, at Hays Medical Center. Born Aug. 18, 1941, in Great Bend, he was the son of Joseph C. and Margaret (Finger) Jenisch. Lawrence graduated from Odin High School. He later received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Fort Hays State Teachers College. On Aug. 17, 1963, he married Mara Kay Neill at the St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell. She survives. He was a farmer and a stockman and also a long-time teacher at the Claflin High School.
Greg Drews, 64, died Nov. 22 at his home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 8, 1950, in Great Bend, he was the son of Herman E. and Shirley (Frey) Drews. He was a tester for Halliburton and later worked for Koch in accounting. Raised in Claflin, Greg moved to Wichita to attend Wichita State University and continued living in Wichita for a number of years before moving to Great Bend.

POTWIN – Winifred V. "Winnie" Hanzlicek, 93, passed away Nov. 26 at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. She was born near Algona, Iowa, July 16, 1921, the daughter of Fred and Doretta (Mitchell) Plumb. She was united in marriage to Gilbert K. Hanzlicek at Wilson. He preceded her in death in 1962. She was a homemaker and later worked for nearly 20 years as a baker in the hospital dietary department.

SARASOTA, Fla. - Virginia Marie (Haberman) Peters, 75, died Nov. 13, in Sarasota, Fla. Born March 12, 1939, in rural Hoisington, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Koester) Haberman. In 1958, she married Tony Vanaman and later married Pete Peters.
ELLINWOOD - Edwin Leroy Stoppel, 86, passed away on Nov. 21, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born June 16, 1928, in Wilson, he was the son of Chris and Clara (Hilgenberg) Stoppel. Edwin worked as a carpenter for most of his life, helping to build skyscrapers and other buildings all throughout Colorado.
ELLINWOOD - William David "Dave" Hayes, 71, passed peacefully on Nov. 24, in Wichita. Born Aug. 28 1943, he was the son of James Yingling and Helen Marie (Stiffler) Hayes. In 2003, he retired from McCrite Retirement Plaza in Topeka. He enjoyed fishing and fixing things that were mechanical.
HUTCHINSON - Bradley J. Van Winkle, 54, passed away peacefully on Nov. 22, at his residence. Born July 13, 1960, in Great Bend, he was the son of James J. and Kathryn (Reidel) Van Winkle. He was raised and received his education in Great Bend, graduating from Great Bend High School in 1979. Brad worked many years farming and more recently running heavy equipment. He was a hard worker before his health
LARNED - Bernice S. Zook, 91, passed away Nov. 20, at Diversicare of Larned. She was born Nov. 28, 1922, in Stafford County, the daughter of Owen E. and Powerley Gilliland Smith. A lifetime area resident, she was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and homemaker.
OLMITZ - Marilou Axman, 84, died Jan. 20, 2015 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Nov. 1, 1930, in Odin, she was the daughter of William and Eleanor (Hickel) Linsner. On April 20, 1949, she married Frank W. Axman in Odin. He died on May 17, 1994. A resident of Olmitz since 1949, coming from Odin, she was a retired nurses' aide, working for the Hoisington Hospital.
Joseph John Zecha, 89, died Jan. 21, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 25, 1925, in Claflin, he was the son of Emil R. and Mary Theresa (Kinzel) Zecha. A Great Bend resident for the past year and half, living in Denver, Colo. for 50 years, he was an auto mechanic for Montgomery Ward, retiring in 1990. He was a fine example of charity to almost everyone he met, befriending numerous persons in need throughout his life. He was an animal lover, especially dogs.
OLMITZ - Joseph E. Hlavaty, 77, died Jan. 19, 2015, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse. He was born Nov. 8, 1937, the son of Erwin J. and Clara Elizabeth (Riedel) Hlavaty. He married Justina Maneth Oct. 6, 1958, at La Crosse. A lifetime Olmitz resident, he was a dairy farmer and stockman and also the postmaster for Olmitz for 25 years.

SALINA - Matilda Pauline "Tillie" Hoth, 98, formally of Holyrood, died Jan. 18, 2015. Born Aug. 30, 1916, in Ellsworth County, she was the daughter of Fred and Anna (Kempke) Hoffman.
CLAFLIN - Garry L. Simpson, 60, died Jan 19, 2015, at his home in Claflin. Born July 18, 1954, in Columbia, N.C., he was the son of Howard and Beulah (Stevenson) Simpson. A resident of Claflin since 2002, coming from Roper, N.C., he was a nurse, working for Washington County Hospital and Central Kansas Medical Center, and formerly owned and operated Prairie House Flowers and Gifts.
OLMITZ - Joseph "Joe" Hlavaty, 77, died Jan. 19 at Locust Grove Nursing Home, LaCrosse. Services are pending with Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, Kansas.
Solomon "Sam" Maier, 103, died Jan. 18, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born June 3, 1911, in rural Barton County, he was the son of Henry Jacob and Anna Marie (Daubert) Maier. On Sept. 24, 1947, he married Betty Jo Mangum in Lubbock, Texas. She died on Dec. 7, 2000. A resident of Great Bend since 1964, coming from rural Susank, he worked for Producers Gas Company, retiring in 1976. He enjoyed fishing, and pheasant, dove and rabbit hunting.
HOISINGTON - Rose Marie Bryant, 73, died Jan. 17, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Jan. 7, 1942, in Chase, she was the daughter of George and Georgia (Moore) Bird. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Lincoln. On Jan. 27, 1961, she married Carl Lee Bryant in Lincoln. A longtime resident of Hoisington, she was employed for 17 1/2 years as a CNA on the night shift at Cheyenne Meadows Nursing Home. She and her husband both shared a love of fishing.
MCPHERSON - Jan Carpenter Sink, 79, wife, mother and grandmother, died Jan. 16, at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita. Born May 12, 1935, McPherson, she was the daughter of Fred D. and Evelyn M. (Sward) Carpenter. In 1953, she graduated from McPherson High School. On Jan. 28, 1956, she was united in marriage to Edwin L. Sink, Jr. in McPherson. He preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 1999. She had worked for State Farm Insurance and Tri-County Special Education Co-op, both in Independence, before retiring from Commerce Bank in Bonner Springs, and relocating to McPherson. HOISINGTON - Gregory Alan "Greg" Bitter, 55, died Jan. 19 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. Born Sept. 6, 1959, he was the son of Harry and Irene (Deutsch) Bitter.
HOLYROOD - Richard E. Johnson, 77, died Jan. 18, at his home. Born Oct. 18, 1937, in West Grove, Pa. he was the son of Samuel H. and Blanche A. Johnson. He grew up in Rising Sun, Md. On Aug. 30, 1958, he married Grace Wilkens Johnson in Lorraine. She survives. A resident of Holyrood since 2005, having moved from the farm 3 miles east of town, he was a farmer and rancher.
OTIS - Velma V. Stieben, 90, died Jan. 17, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse. Born May 28, 1924, in rural Galatia, she was the daughter of Henry and Anna M. (Koch) Miller. In 1942, she graduated from Otis Rural High School. On Aug. 29, 1943, she married Lester M. Stieben at Otis. He preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 2004. A lifelong resident of Rush County, she was a homemaker.
William Francis "Bill" Maneth, 81, died Jan. 16, 2015, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 13, 1933, at Great Bend, the son of William Leo and Mary Teresa (Mauler) Maneth. He married Kay Ellen Dorfshaffer Aug. 24, 1957, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he worked for various retail firms around Great Bend as a counter parts man, retiring from Great Bend Farm Equipment in 1996.
Joan Charles, 84, died Jan. 5, 2015, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 2, 1930, at Oswego, the daughter of Clyde and Evelyn (Claxton) Morain. She was a butcher at Don's Food Mart, Great Bend. Ms. Charles was a long-time Great Bend resident, also residing in McKinney, Texas, and Hutchinson.
