PRATT – Velma Margaret Meireis, 97, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2016. She enjoyed a full and vibrant life with her family and friends. During the last stage of her life she was lovingly taken care of by her friends and family at the Pratt Regional Rehabilitation Center.
HAYS - Ellen Lou (Jennings) Rudell, 69, Hays, died Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Via Christi Medical Center's St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was born Aug. 15, 1946, in Monument, the daughter of Newt and Dixie (Windmill) Jennings. She was lovingly raised by her Aunt, Esther Hahn. She married Clarence Rudell and was a day-care provider for many years, was a hairdresser, and she and Clarence owned and operated the Annie Oakley Motel in Oakley until his death in 2013. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and going to auctions and traveling. She especially loved attending her son's sporting events.
NESS CITY - Richard Alexander Rodie, 88, passed away at Cedar Village Care Center, Ness City on April 21, 2016. He was born on Feb. 23, 1928, the son of Alex and Clara (Scherman) Rodie. He enjoyed farming and helping with the Future Farmers of America organization.
HOLYROOD - Viola Katherine Besthorn, 94, died Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Wilson. She was born June 3, 1921 to Joseph Henry Ross and Clara Mae (Ruby), who had eight other children (Edith Irene Weeks, Ethel Marie Bechtel, Florence I. Meharg, Clara Mae McCabe, the twins, Lee and Leo, Kelly and Joseph Jr.) all deceased. She married Arthur William Besthorn on June 2, 1940.
Kenneth Michael Kern, 54, died April 20, 2016, at his home in Great Bend. Born Dec. 19, 1961, in Great Bend, he was the son of Kenneth M. and Ellen (Carter) Kern. A lifetime resident of Great Bend he was an oilfield driller.
Nancy Ann Zeilinger, 68, died April 20, 2016, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. She was born Jan. 28, 1948, and then placed in the Emmanuel Deaconess Orphanage on April 3, 1948, as an act of love from her birth parents. She was adopted by the Rev. Otto L. and Dorothy (Sandrock) Zeilinger on Sept. 9, 1948, and taken home to Hildreth, Neb., to be with her big "adoctored" brother, Neal. INDEPENDENCE - Shelley V. Brooks, 62, passed away April 15, 2016, at home surrounded by family. Born March 27, 1954, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Maurice and Ramona (Hall) Tefft. She attended and graduated from Great Bend schools in 1972. After graduation, she moved to Kansas City. She worked for Arthur Murray Dance Studio, where she eventually met her husband. Shelley married Bruce Brooks on Feb. 9, 1980, in Kansas City, Mo. PRESTON - Olen M. Munz, 61, died April 13, 2016, at Pratt Regional Living Center in Pratt. He was born Jan. 23, 1955, at Great Bend, the son of Robert Godfrey and Wilma Rhae (LeWallen) Munz. He married Anna Stanley in 1984 at Minneapolis, Kan., and they later divorced. He was a heavy equipment operator for Pratt County Road Department and enjoyed building custom rifles.
