Martin Arthur Morgenstern, 102, died Nov. 6, 2016, at his home in Great Bend, surrounded by many people who loved him. Born Sept. 6, 1914, on the family farm near Galatia, he was the son of Samuel and Lena (Radke) Morgenstern.
WICHITA - Dorothy Louise "Dottie" Freeman, 74, received her eternal reward on Nov. 5, 2016. Dottie spent 24 years as Director of Main Place Youth Teen Challenge Center in Kingman where she and her staff ministered to more than 600 at-risk teenaged girls. She was also a legal guardian to Ms. Ashley Chaffin.
Dorothy May Schmitt, 77, died Nov. 3, 2016, at her home in Great Bend. Born June 29, 1939, at LaCrosse, she was the daughter of Dan and Katherine (Herdt) Wagner. She married Vernon Schmitt and they later divorced. A Great Bend resident most of her life, coming from Otis, she was a retired secretary for Sunflower Diversified Services.
ELLINWOOD - Maxine Mae Haddon, 80, died Nov. 6, 2016, at Hays Medical Center. Born March 18, 1936, at Great Bend, she was the daughter of Alfred and Mary (Scarborough) Batchman. On June 13, 1954, she married Loren Don Haddon at Great Bend. A lifetime Barton County resident, she was a homemaker.
Martha Bender, 98, died Nov. 4, 2016, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. Born Aug. 16, 1918, at Susank, she was the daughter of Jacob and Anna Marie (Daubert) Maier. On Nov. 14, 1937, she married Louie Bender at Russell. He died Nov. 15, 1969. A Great Bend resident since 1943, coming from Russell, she was a homemaker.
Virginia M. Walters, 96, lifelong Great Bend resident, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016 at Country Place Living in Ellinwood. Born May 27, 1920 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Joseph Roy and Mary Louise "Louisa" (Whitacre) Evans. She graduated from Great Bend High School, where she had been Homecoming Queen. After graduation, she was selected to be Miss Great Bend and competed at the state final Miss Kansas contest in Topeka. She was united in marriage to Cleat Walters on Jan. 29, 1939 in Great Bend.
Claudia Rae Cook, 72, passed away peacefully in her sleep Oct. 22, 2016. She was in good health at the time of her passing. Claudia Rae was the youngest daughter of Hazel (Standley) and Everett Cook. Born March 22, 1944 in Goodland, she spent much of her early life growing up in Winona. Claudia was born developmentally disabled, but never let such things keep her from having a good day. PRATT - Theda Howell Rose, 83, of Pratt, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016. She was born Sept. 24, 1933, in Mullinville, to Clifford and Thelma (Liggett) Howell. She graduated from Mullinville High School and earned a Masters in Special Education from Fort Hays State University. On July 12, 1953, she married Franklin A. Rose at her home in Mullinville. She taught a year at Stafford, then moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, for two years, then moved back to the family farm before teaching special education in Great Bend for 20 years, then moved back to Greensburg, until the tornado in 2007 when ...
June L. McGreevy, 95, died Nov. 3, 2016, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born July 17, 1921, at Lorraine, the daughter of William and Edna (Narey) Murray. She married William Stanley McGreevy Sept. 3, 1946, at Great Bend. He died Sept. 26, 1974. A Great Bend resident since 1941, coming from Lorraine, Mrs. McGreevy was a Registered Nurse at Central Kansas Medical Center for 25 years. She enjoyed playing golf and cards, as well as bowling.
Joyce M. Heinz-Strecker, 64, died Nov. 2, 2016, at her home in Great Bend. Born March 23, 1952, at Dodge City, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Esther (Rohlman) Heinz. On May 6, 1989, she married Dennis Strecker Jr. at Garden City. A Great Bend resident since 1989, coming from Garden City, she worked in customer service at Dillons for 22 years.
SALINA - Brian E. Conner, M.D., 70, passed away Oct. 27, 2016. Born Jan. 27, 1946, in Great Bend he was the son of Fred and Helen (Opie) Conner. Brian graduated from Great Bend High School and participated with the Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a chemistry degree followed by a medical doctorate in 1972. While at KU, he met Ann Cushing, and they were married in Downs, in 1969.
HUDSON - Merle Dean Teichmann, 83, died Oct. 27, 2016, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Born April 12, 1933, he was the son of Otto and Elsie Ukens Teichmann. He was a 1951 graduate of Hudson High School and was a lifetime farmer. On Sept. 26, 1954, he married Marilyn Walter at Hudson. She died on June 4, 2016.
Verla Lou Morrison, 80, died Oct. 24, 2016, at Hays Medical Center. Born Oct. 18, 1936, in Baileyville, she was the daughter of Lee Dennis and Ava (Mann) Morrison. She married Bill Colson, They later divorced. A resident of Great Bend, she was the owner and operator of Who Knows Tavern.
