ST. JOHN - Phyllis Joan (Reynolds) Staub, 82, passed away April 11, 2017, at Kenwood Plaza, St. John. She was born on July 28, 1934, at Macksville, the daughter of Basil Leno and Laura Jane (Spangler) Reynolds. She married Victor Lee Staub on Sept. 9, 1952, at Macksville. She graduated from Macksville High School in 1952, attended Salt City Business College in Hutchinson and was owner of Staub Insurance Agency and Real Estate from 1974 to 2000.
LAWRENCE - Lorenz E. Ochs, 92, died with his wife of 69 years by his side on April 6, 2017. He was born into a large German family with many aunts, uncles, and cousins on Dec. 20, 1924, in Hoisington, the son of Jacob and Lena Krug Oaks. He graduated Hoisington High School.
Kenneth J. Link, 88, died April 9, 2017, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born July 4, 1928, at Chase, the son of Louis and Bertha (Gregory) Link. On March 27, 1951, he married Shirley Jean Wallace at Holy Name Catholic Church in Bushton. A Great Bend resident since 1960, coming from Chase, he was employed by Skelly Oil Company, and previously owned and operated Chase Tank Service, Chase Well Service and Strata Drilling.
HAYS – Thomas Oakley Cole, age 70, passed away March 15, 2017 at Hays Medical Center. Born Aug. 8, 1946 in Great Bend, he was the son of Miles K. and Ava L. (Brown) Cole. On July 3, 1966 he married Vickie J. Bowsher in Great Bend. She preceded him in death Jan. 2, 2014.
TIMKEN - Angela Rebel, 34, died March 31, 2017. Born Aug. 6, 1982, at Comanche County Hospital, she was the daughter of Jimmy and Patti Bratcher) Shelton. In 2001 she graduated from Barton County Adult Education and then attended Hays School of Cosmetology. On April 19, 2014, she married Jeff Rebel in LaCrosse. She was a CNA-CMA.
SEWARD - Barbara Jean Braddy, age 71, passed away on March 31, 2017 at her home. She was born on July 30, 1945 at Larned, the daughter of Charles M. and Helen W. (Robbins) Baier, Sr. A life-long resident of the Seward area, she was a retired secretary for Fort Larned Federal Parks Service. Her memberships include, Xavier Catholic Church, Altar Society, Seward City Council and Xavier Cemetery Board. WICHITA - Sheila M. Bieberle, 56, passed away April 3, 2017. Sheila is survived by husband, Roger A. SALINA - Lucille Marie Jarus, 89, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at her home. She was the youngest of six siblings born to Emil and Anna Dimmer Ney, rural Hanston, on March 7, 1928. After graduating from high school and Marymount College, she taught home economics at schools in Kansas City, Mo., Morganville and Wilson. On June 8, 1957, she married Dr. Eugene C. "Bud" Jarus, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. They settled in Ellsworth.
GREAT BEND - Carol Elaine Hallett, 80, died April 5, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. Born Dec. 27, 1936, at Otis, she was the daughter of Manuel and Marie (Koch) Ochs. She married Eugene Ernest Hallett Sept. 22, 1956, at LaCrosse. He died Feb. 16, 2017. She was a clerk at Fuller Brush Company and was an aide at Lincoln Elementary for 10 years.
ELLINWOOD - Kent A. Knop, 78, passed away on April 3, 2017, at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born Sept. 3, 1938, in Great Bend, he was the son of Alvin Carl and Mary Gretchen (Isern) Knop. In 1956 he graduated from Ellinwood High School. On Feb. 12, 1961, he married Rose Cregger at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ellinwood. He was a farmer, rancher, and dairyman from a very young age; later he continued to farm as well as working jobs in the oil field and construction.
Wayne E. Swigart, 84, died April 3, 2017, Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 20, 1932, at Blue Rapids, the son of Nolan and Eunice (Craine) Swigart. He married Wilma Martha Erna "Jean" Schroeder Sept. 21, 1957, at Great Bend. She died June 29, 2009. A Great Bend resident since 1956, coming from Blue Rapids, he was a cowboy for Taylor Feeding and was a foreman for the City of Great Bend Parks Department.
HUTCHINSON - Cheryl Cecilia Smith, 73, died March 31, 2017, at Brookdale Senior Living in Hutchinson. Born Dec. 17, 1943, at Denver, Colo., she was the daughter of Celina (Desmarteau) and Donald Jurgensen and James Merlin Smith. She was employed by Black Angus Steak Ranch for more than 20 years. She was known as the tiny lady who drove her 4-wheeled scooter around town.
