DODGE CITY – Pauline C. Durler, 89, died Dec. 29 at the Kansas Soldiers Home, Halsey Hall, Ft. Dodge. She was born Dec. 25, 1924, at Windthorst, the daughter of Herman "Harry" and Catherine Heeke Schawe. On Aug. 25, 1947, she married John E. Durler at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Dodge City. He preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 2011. A lifetime area resident, she was a homemaker and farm wife.
HUTCHINSON - Robert H. Bagby, 87, died Dec. 25 at his home in Hutchinson. He was born Sept. 4, 1926, at Great Bend, the son of Nelson and Margaret Williams Bagby. He was a graduate of Great Bend High School. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
Betty Jean Waitt, 84, died Dec. 25 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born July 15, 1929, at McPherson, the daughter of Austin and Eva (Wilson) Nyquist. She was a Registered Nurse working at Hadley Medical Center, Hays, and at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend, retiring in 1994.
MANHATTAN - John R. Graham, 68, died peacefully with family by his side on Dec. 20 in Manhattan. A native Kansan, John was born in Liberal, on Aug. 14, 1945, to John Alfred and Doris Fay (Bozarth) Graham.
HOISINGTON - Doyle A. Martin, 60, died Dec. 22 at Suwanee Valley Care Center in Lake City, Fla. Born March 10, 1953, at Hays, he was the son of Doyle E. and Dorothea (Lucky) Martin. He lived most of his life in Hoisington and lived in Lake Butler, Fla., for about a year and a half. He worked in the oil field as a roughneck
TULSA, Okla. - Carl Henry Schlegel, 95, former Hays resident died Monday, Dec. 23, at his new home in Tulsa, Okla. He was born April 26, 1918 in Otis, to John Henry and Leah (Kerbs) Schlegel. He received his early education at Otis and was attending Kansas University when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Friends urged him to apply for a college deferment but he declined saying his country had been good to him, he owed something back. PAWNEE ROCK - John Leslie Fitzsimmons Jr., 58, died Dec. 23 at his home in rural Pawnee Rock, surrounded by his loving family. Born Sept. 28, 1955 in Kingman, he was the son of John Leslie and Ella Marie (Tetrick) Fitzsimmons. On Dec. 2, 1983 he married Loretta Kay Stetler in Great Bend. A long time rural Pawnee Rock resident, coming from McPherson, he was the quality systems manager for Size Wise Wheelchairs of Kansas in Hays.
Betty F. Shoaff, 84, died Dec. 22 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born May 1, 1929 in Wilson, she was the daughter of Edward and Emma (Chrudimsky) Hanzlicek. On May 22, 1955 she married Samuel C. Shoaff in Wilson. A resident of Great Bend since 1949, coming from Wilson, she was employed by Unified School District 428 Food Service.
NORTON - Marietta Gilmore, 88, died Dec. 21, in Norton. Born Jan. 19, 1925 in Cairo, she was the daughter of Leslie (Judd) L. and Mabel Dale (McGaffin) Fitzsimmons. She attended rural schools and graduated from Pratt High School. She married Richard Leslie Webster. In 1960, she married William Edward Gilmore. He died in 2001. She was a resident of Parkwood Assisted Living, later moving to the Andbe Home in Norton to be closer to her daughter. She was employed at a laundry mat, a chiropractor's office, as a homemaker and as a domestic helper for several elderly Pratt residents.
