PAWNEE ROCK - Shiela Sutton Schmidt, 100, died Jan. 26 at the Good Samaritan Center in Howard, S.D. Born Dec. 28, 1911 in Salina, she was the daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth (Smith) Sutton. She grew up in Salina, graduating from Salina High School in 1929. She earned her A. D. in History from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina in 1933 and her A. M. in music from Colorado State College of Education at Greeley in 1946. ELLINWOOD - Linda Kay Deisher, 67, of Ellinwood died on Jan. 21 in Aurora, Colo. Born Sept. 8, 1944 in Wichita, she was the daughter of Albert Meyers and Lavona Mills Meyers. A resident of Ellinwood for the past 18 months, formerly of Colorado and Las Vegas, Nev., she was a registered surgical nurse.
LARNED - Roger Alan Caldwell, 69, died Jan. 29 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. Born Jan. 12, 1943, in Tulsa, Okla., he was the son of Franklin Eugene and Lucille Hicks Caldwell. On Feb. 16, 1990, he married Charlotte Boris in Tallahassee, Fla. She died Jan. 12, 2008. He was an account executive for Fox 49, in Tallahassee, Fla.
RUSH CENTER - Leonard C. Oborny, 74, died Jan. 29 at his home in Rush Center. Born Dec. 29, 1937, in La Crosse, he was the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Kladik) Oborny. In 1955 he graduated from La Crosse Rural High School. On Jan. 6, 1959, he married Alice R. Nordman at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Olmitz. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was a service tire repairman for Farmer's Co-op in Rush Center.
HUTCHINSON - Richard Alan "Rick" Michael, loving husband, father, "Papa," brother and friend, went to be with his divine savior on Jan. 28 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born April 14, 1952, in Lyons, he was 59. On Sept. 14, 1979, he married Tonya Jean Rojas in Hutchinson. He spent many years as an oilfield driller throughout the Midwest. In 1991 he graduated from Hutchinson Community College and in 1993 he received his L.B.S.W. as a Phi Theta Kappa graduate of Bethel College. LARNED - Delores June Clawson, 84, died Jan. 29 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. She was born June 28, 1927, at Great Bend, the daughter of Joseph and Katie Rowe Koelsch. She married Virgil M. Clawson on March 24, 1955, at Newkirk, Okla. He died on Aug. 11, 2007. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a homemaker and had worked at the Old Blue Goose and Harvest Inn restaurants.
HOISINGTON - Alvina Katherine Haas, 88, died Jan. 26 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Nov. 21, 1923 in Hoisington, she was the daughter of Jacob and Salamena (Radke) Boger. On July 26, 1945 she married Rufus Haas in Hoisington. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, she was a homemaker and worked along side of her husband on the dairy farm. She also was employed by the Galatia School District 66 as a cook for 18 years, by the Bierock Shop in Hoisington, and as a seamstress for Stricker Farms in Milberger. Bernard L. "Hus" Huslig, 83, died Jan. 26 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born Feb. 29, 1928 in Claflin, he was the son of Leo and Mary (Boor) Huslig. On July 23, 1949 he married Donna Joan "Jo" Rose in Great Bend. She died on Oct. 22, 2006. A resident of Great Bend for most of his life, he was a lifetime oilfield worker.

BUSHTON - Larry L. Novotny Jr., 50, died Jan. 25 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Oct. 20, 1961 in Lincoln, he was the son of Larry L. and C. Joan Zachgo Novotny Sr. He was a resident of Pathways Rest Care in Great Bend.
WICHITA - Bashor, C. LeRoy, 74, passed away on Oct. 11. He was a proud Vietnam veteran serving 10 years in the United States Navy. Following the military he graduated Fort Hays State University with a master's degree in psychology. He was a retired school psychologist for USD 428 in Great Bend.
Nadine Dreiling, 81, died Oct. 10, at Hays Medical Center. Born June 25, 1933, in Neck City, Mo., she was the daughter of George and Vera (Sargent) Moore. On Oct. 2, 1954, she married Donald A. Dreiling in Chase. He died on Nov. 11, 2010. A resident of Great Bend since 1954, coming from Chase, she and her husband owned and operated Don's Food Mart and she retired from Dillon's Pharmacy. She loved her grandchildren and watching sports, especially the University of Kansas Jayhawks and New York Yankees.
WINFIELD - Donald M. "Don" Kline, 87, of Winfield, passed away on Oct. 11, at Cumbernauld Village. Born Aug. 29, 1927, in Wichita, he was the son of Arthur C. and Martha H. (Harris) Kline. He was raised and educated in the Marion and Great Bend areas. Don left school prior to graduation to join the United States Navy. He proudly served his country on the USS Monrovia as a Medical Corpsman from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1949. HOISINGTON - George L. Carson, 71, died Aug. 30, at Clara Barton Hospital. Born July 18, 1943 in Great Bend, he was the son of Russell and Pearl (Smith) Carson. On March 3, 1967, he married Gloria Newell in Damar. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State University. A lifetime resident of rural Barton County, he was employed by the Kansas Fish and Game Commission as a biologist.

Kirby graduated in 1971 from Hoisington High School. He was active in both vocal music and band programs, excelling at the trumpet. Paul E. Dyer, 84, died Oct. 8 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 20, 1930, in Great Bend, he was the son of Homer and Katherine (Jones) Dyer. On Jan. 4, 1954, he married Julitta M. Elsen, in Great Bend. She died on March 12, 1995. He was a lifetime resident of Great Bend.
John D. Trimmer, 65, of Great Bend and formerly of Pawnee Rock and Dundee, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 8, at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. He was born on Feb. 11, 1949, at Belleville, to George Franklin and Edna Alene (Larr) Trimmer. He graduated from Republic County Schools in 1965 and was united in marriage to Diana Levingston on June 10, 1976, at Pawnee Rock. She died on July 22, 2013. John worked as a chain hand in the oilfield prior to his retirement. He enjoyed rock collecting, watching wrestling and spending time with family.
