ABILENE - Brooklyn Lee Debenham, 5, of Abilene, passed away on Oct. 23, after a fatal farm accident. Brooklyn always had a smile on her face and brought laughter and happiness to everyone she was around. She had her dads smile, her moms toes and the prettiest blue eyes. Brooklyn loved singing, dancing, playing dress-up, and playing with her sisters.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Magdalen Robl, 93, died Sept. 1 in Las Vegas, Nev. Born on June 14, 1920 in Ellinwood, she was the daughter of Mike and Anna Robl. A graduate of Ellinwood High School, she worked for an oil company in Houston, Texas and retired from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
LARNED - Richard H. Lewis, 80, died Oct. 23, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. Born July 22, 1933, in Timken, he was the son of Willis (Tad) and Hazel I. Vanderford Lewis. On June 18, 1965, he married Gwendolyn (Gwen) F. Morris in Larned. She passed away Aug. 6, 2004. A lifetime area resident, he was a heating and air conditioning technician.
HOISINGTON - Elwood L. "Woody" Doze, 50, died Oct. 23 at his home in rural Hoisington. He was born July 4, 1963, at Great Bend, the son of Robert and Florence (Clayton) Doze. Elwood graduated from Great Bend High School where he was a member of the FFA. He had been a Hoisington resident since 2002, coming from Medicine Lodge. He worked as a rancher and enjoyed roping and also rode in the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty.
Laura A. Bader, 52, passed away at her home in Great Bend on Oct. 21, after a lengthy illness. Born July 4, 1961, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Paul and Marie (Binder) Molleker. She moved with her family to Hays, where she attended school and graduated from Marian High School in 1979. On June 19, 1981, she married Michael Bader in Hays. The couple made their home in Great Bend. She was a homemaker and enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, ceramics, needlepoint, and making felt Christmas stockings and ornaments.
Gerald Joseph "Jerry" Prosser, 72, died Oct. 21 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Oct. 5, 1941 in Rush County, he was the son of William and Matilda (Birzer) Prosser. On Jan. 31, 1965 he married Leona Kober at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, he was a service manager at Marlette Homes until its closing, then was owner and operator of Prosser Home Improvement, working as a finish carpenter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and music, having played saxophone in a polka band.
Barbara A. "Bobbi" Donner, 71, passed away on Oct. 22, at Cherry Village Residential Care in Great Bend, where she had resided for the past two years. Born on Feb. 3, 1942, in Topeka, she was the daughter of John D. and Blanche (Hall) Mullinix. She grew up in Topeka prior to moving with her family to northern California as a teenager. On July 11, 1959, she was united in marriage to Robert Donner in Paradise, Calif. Barbara lived in the cities of Paradise, Chico, and Tuscon, Calif., until moving to Great Bend four years ago.
LARNED - John Richard Grant died on Oct. 20 at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital. He was born in Mitchell, S.D. He was a graduate of Plankington High School in Plankington, S.D. Self-employed, his work included farming, milk delivery routes, feedlot work, and a brief stint at the Larned State Hospital. He had a life-long interest in finding new uses for items. Even long after he retired he continued to tear down old houses and barns to salvage the lumber.
Marie Johnson, 91, former longtime Great Bend resident and widow of Elmer C. Johnson, passed away on Oct. 18, at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita. Born Sept. 23, 1922 in Hugoton, she was the daughter of George W. and Estella (Tolbert) Smith. On Aug. 22, 1938, she was united in marriage to Elmer C. Johnson in Garden City. The couple made their home in Great Bend for many years until Elmer's death on Feb. 28, 1998. Marie then lived in Larned for six years, was a resident of the Peabody Nursing Home in Peabody for five years, and had ...
