HOISINGTON - Raymond L. Kraft, 94, died Aug. 19 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born March 5, 1918 in Galatia, he was the son of Jacob George and Eva E. (Ehrlich) Kraft. On Dec. 15, 1945 he married Rosa Deutsch in Galatia. She died on Jan. 9, 1997. A lifetime resident of Galatia and Hoisington, he was farmer and a stockman. After retirement from farm life he and Rosa moved to Hoisington to enjoy their time in town.
Wilmer "Wimpy" Sander, 80, died Aug. 19 at his home in Great Bend. Born Nov. 14, 1931 in Victoria, he was the son of Joe J. and Adeline (Meis) Sander. On Feb. 12, 1952 he married Norma Jean Engel in Ellis. A resident of Great Bend for 54 years, coming from Otis, he was a meat cutter for McCurdy Locker, Wimpy's Meat and Locker Service and Central Kitchen.
TIMKEN - Stanley M. Elsen, 61, died Aug. 19 at Hutchinson Regional Hospital. Born Jan. 29, 1951 in Great Bend, he was the son of Nicholas and Emelia (Schwartz) Elsen. He was a resident of Timken for 26 years, coming from Pawnee Rock. On May 8, 1976 he married Janet Rodie in Great Bend. She survives. Mr. Elsen was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
ELLINWOOD-Theresa Schartz, 73, died Aug. 19 at her home in Ellinwood. Born May 15, 1939 at Great Bend, she was the daughter of Wendelin and Dorothy (Herl) Herrman. She grew up in Great Bend, but would later move to Ellinwood after she married LeRoy G. Schartz on Dec. 31, 1955. He died May 26, 2010. Mrs. Schartz was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Ellinwood. She also served with the Altar Society and attended the Prince of Peace Parish of Great Bend. She was a long term active member of Curves.
ODIN - Bernard "Barney" J. Prosser, 88, died Aug. 16 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born July 14, 1924, in Mt. Angel, Ore., he was the son of Joseph A. and Eleanor (Ficker) Prosser. In 1951 he married Gladys Utne in San Diego, Calif. A resident of Odin, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 31 years and retired as a major. He also served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retirement he worked for a government intelligence agency in Washington, D.C., and had many Military Declarations including the Purple Heart. In 1955 he ...
HESSTON - Iris June (Wetz) Banman, 86, died on Aug. 14 at Kidron Bethel in North Newton. Born May 26, 1926, at Wichita, she was adopted soon after birth by Herman and Myrtle (Ray) Wetz. Raised on a farm near Kiowa, Iris went on to graduate with a degree in music education from the Wichita University and played with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. She taught in Wichita, Clearwater and Ellinwood elementary schools and for many years gave private piano and violin lessons.
Diana Collins, 57, died Aug. 15 at her home in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 19, 1955, at San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Richard and Eulalia (Salazar) Mendez. She married Dickey Collins on Jan. 13, 1973, at Syracuse. They later divorced.
TIMKEN - Jeanette Holopirek, 27, died Aug. 13 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City. She was born June 22, 1985 at Great Bend, the daughter of Terry and Alice (Penka) Holopirek. She was a longtime resident of Timken. Ms. Holopirek was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken and a 2003 Otis-Bison High School graduate. She was active in Rush County 4-H.
LYONS - Mary Elizabeth "Bette" Kennedy, 93, died Aug. 14 at Sunflower Estates, Lyons. She was born Sept. 6, 1918 in Guthrie Okla. the daughter of Carl and Hazel Del (Smith Madden). She lived in Lyons since 1940 and is the former owner of Porter Abstract of Lyons.
