George W. Bemis, 77, died Jan. 26 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Jan. 25, 1935 in Great Bend, he was the son of Carney and Ula (Falgren) Bemis. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Kansas State University, he worked for the Corps of Engineers in Kansas City. On Oct. 31, 1959 he married Jane Olsen at Sparta, Wis. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was owner and operator of Bemis Construction, Inc.
HOISINGTON- Helen Maxine Barlow, 85, died June 18 at Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was born Jan. 25, 1927 at Arkansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Ernest and Iola (Kincaid) Hilderbrandt. In 1950, she married E.C. "Dusty" Barlow in Arkansas. Helen was a Barton County resident since 1964. She moved to Texas in 2011 to be closer to her daughters.
TULSA, Okla. - Ricky Lee Fischer, 64, died June 17 at Cancer Treatment Center of America at Southwestern Regional Medical Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born March 8, 1948, at Great Bend, he was the son of Edwin and Ruth (Krueger) Fischer. He worked for North American Salt of Lyons and was a truck driver for C and P Electric, Branson, Snell, and Builders Transport.
LARNED - Gloria Dianne Youngdahl, 68, died June 17, at Hays Medical Center. Born Oct. 23, 1943, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Glenn N. and Olive D. Smiley Johnson. She was a customer service representative in electronics.
KINSLEY - Bonnie M. Miller, 70, died June 15 at Pratt Hospice House. Born Sept. 23, 1941, in Great Bend she was the daughter of Lawrence E. and Evelyn C. Schauf Jacobs. On Aug. 8, 1959, she married Richard Miller in Dubuque. He died on July 8, 2000. She was a dietary manager.
KINSLEY - Minetta M. Carothers, 83, died June 16 at Medicalodge in Kinsley. Born May 29, 1929 ,in Spearville, she was the daughter of William E. and Minnie E. Diehl Berry. On June 22, 1947, she married Lee E. Carothers in Offerle. He died on Jan. 15, 2011. She was employed as a district secretary.
NEW STRAWN - Edwin Lee "Ed" Anderson, 66, died June 7 at Newman Regional Health in Emporia. Born Jan. 4, 1946, in Emporia, he was the son of Ernest Otto and Marjorie June (Garrett) Anderson. He grew up on the family farm, northeast of Burlington, and attended Martindale rural school. He graduated from Burlington High School. He then entered the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Hornet at the end of the Vietnam War.
HAYS - Jeremy Owen Johnson, 27, died Thursday, June 14, the result of a work accident in rural Ellis County. He was born Feb. 21, 1985 in Great Bend, Kansas to Howard and Carmen (Beck) Johnson. He graduated from Claflin High School in 2003.
ELLINWOOD - Bernadine Marie Riemann, 86, died June 11 at Country Place Senior Living, Ellinwood. She was born Sept. 20, 1925, at Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of James Walter and Hulda Dorthia Frede Dreyzehner. She graduated from Ellinwood High School. She married Albert Edwin Riemann on June 28, 1942, at Ellinwood. He died in 1991. An Ellinwood resident, she previously lived in Claflin for many years. She was a homemaker.
Elizabeth "Jane" Keil, 84, died June 10 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita. She was born Jan. 22, 1928, at Elk Springs, Mo., the daughter of Druard and Ola Mable (Meador) Parish. She married Melvin Keil on May 5, 1951, at Great Bend. A Great Bend resident since 1936, coming from Elk Springs, Mo., she was an operator for Southwestern Bell.
SALINA - Wanda C. Spencer, 95, died June 9, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society facility in Minneapolis. Wanda was born Dec. 17, 1916, in Great Bend, and lived a fond portion of her life in Stafford county on the farm of her parents, John and Lana Tucker.
Paul W. Hammans, 68, died June 9 at Great Bend. He was born Aug. 2, 1943 at Florence, the son of John and Ethel (Roberts) Hammans. He was a 1972 graduate of the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He married Martha Weller June 23, 1973 at Great Bend. They later divorced. He then married Karen Ueckert April 16, 1988 at Great Bend.
