Matthew A. "Matt" Smolik, 90, passed away on Sept. 16, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Carolyn A. Sheets, 79, died Sept. 15 at her home in Great Bend. Born Oct. 3, 1934, in rural Rose Hill, she was the daughter of Earl and Esther (Hall) Showalter. She married Gerald Skeels. On Nov. 9, 1979, she married Donald Eugene "Gene" Sheets in Dighton. He died July 25, 2012. A Great Bend resident since 1963, she was an office manager for Great Bend Appliance for 13 years and was a former secretary at Security State Bank and First National Bank. She enjoyed her family and friends and playing golf.
Peggy Lynn Crowe, 58, died Sept. 16 at her home in Great Bend. Born May 4, 1956, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Johnnie Douglas and Marie (Griffith) Crowe. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was an occupational therapist at Clara Barton Hospital.
Lester Leo Achatz, 65, died Sept. 14 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born Oct. 21, 1948, in Great Bend, he was the son of Milton and Bertha (Birzer) Achatz. On Dec. 27, 2011, he married Kimm M. Lewis in Great Bend. He grew up in Great Bend and lived in Virginia before moving back to Great Bend. He was employed by H-2 Trucking.
ALBERT - Virginia Marie (Amerine) Bird, 91, gently journeyed from this world to a new beginning on Sept. 14th. Though she was a life-long resident of Barton County, she spent the final years of her life with her daughter providing precious companionship in Wichita and then Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Ellsworth. TIMKEN - Ernest "Ernie" Bucl, 88, died Sept. 14 at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse. Born April 15, 1926 at La Crosse, he was the son of Lucian and Frances (Havelka) Bucl.

HUTCHINSON - Aubrey Linus Schartz, 82, died Sept. 14, at his home in Hutchinson. Born Aug. 20, 1932, in rural Ellinwood, he was the son of Edward and Frances Schartz. On Oct. 16, 1951, he married Bonnie Lou Harbaugh in Ellinwood. He retired from Marmie's Motors in Great Bend and moved to Hutchinson.
John Russell Branine, 65, passed away Sept. 12 at the Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born Feb. 23, 1949, the son of Ralph Sweet and Helen Helms Branine. He was a lifetime resident of Great Bend.
LARNED - Vern Arlyn Steffen, 83, passed away Sept. 12, 2014, at his home in Larned.
HOLYROOD - Mark Lynn Folk, 56, passed away of an aneurism Sept. 11, at his residence in Holyrood. He was born March 10, 1958, in Ellsworth to Max and Beverly (Cron) Folk. A lifetime resident of Holyrood, he was a bookkeeper and office manager for Folk Well and Lease.
Carol Ann Cook, 71, died Sept. 11, at home in Great Bend. She was born March 1, 1943, at Kinsley, to Bernard and Daisy (Goad) Fahlsing. She married Charles Banks in 1961. She later married Phillip Ward in 1976. She then married Dennis Cook on Aug. 11, 2003, at Las Vegas, Nevada. She worked in retail for Revco and Dillons until retiring.

Robert J. "Bob" Tittel, 56, passed away on Sunday morning, Oct. 5, at Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born on Jan. 23, 1958 in Ness City, he was the son of Benhardt and Hildegard Frieda Emma (Schettler) Tittel. In 1976, he graduated from Ness City High School, and that same year he moved to Great Bend. A longtime Great Bend resident, he worked for many years as a cable technician for CableVision in Great Bend until health issues prevented him from working. Bob was a bit of a Jack-of-all-trades, and enjoyed many activities, including auto body restoration.
James W. Herren, 92, died Oct. 6, at Sumner County Care Center in Wellington. Born June 24, 1922, in Great Bend, he was the son of George L. and Minda (Knighton) Herren. On July 10, 1978, he married Beverly A. Barnes in Wichita. She preceded him in death. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a supervisor for Kansas Foundation for the Blind.
