Maria Julia Lopez, 54, died Jan. 2, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born June 25, 1960, in Havana, Cuba, she was the daughter of Israel and Alba E. (Lopez) Lopez. She married Enrique Alvarez. A resident of Great Bend since 2009, coming from Miami, Fla., she was a caregiver for Rosewood Services.
Mary Gabrielson, 76, passed away on Jan. 4, at her home in Great Bend. Born on Dec. 26, 1938, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Carl H. "Dutch" and Helen L. (Edman) Eitel. In 1956, she graduated from Great Bend High School. On Nov. 7, 1964, she was united in marriage to Harold W. Gabrielson at Carson City, Nev. Throughout her life, Mary lived in Oregon, Mountain View and San Jose, Calif., and Las Vegas, Nev. before returning to Great Bend in May of 1990. HUTCHINSON - Thelma "Loretta" Broughton Cunningham French, 83, passed away on Dec. 31, 2014. She was born to Leonard and Theora Broughton on Sept. 28, 1931, at the family farm in Francis, Okla. The family moved to Hoisington, where she graduated from high school in 1949. Loretta moved to Hutchinson to attend Salt City Business College, graduating in the fall of 1950.
LINDSBORG - Howard Allen Youngblom, 99, died Dec. 30, at Bethany Nursing Home. Born May 19, 1915, in Topeka, he was the son of Herbert C. and Jennie O. (Nelson) Youngblom. He graduated from Topeka High School and later Bethany Lutheran College in Lindsborg in 1939. He received his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Augustana Theological Seminary, Rock Island, Ill. in 1944. He was ordained into the ministry of the Augustana Synod on June 11, 1944, in the First Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minn. HOISINGTON - Mari Jo Ray, 77, died Jan. 3, 2015, at Almost Home, Great Bend. She was born Sept. 20, 1937, in Great Bend, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Schneweis) Peschka. Mari Jo attended Hoisington High School. She worked as a telephone operator, and was also a police dispatcher, city cashier, city clerk and city manager.
James A. Lofland, 62, died Jan. 3, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born April 27, 1952, at Great Bend, the son of James R. and Joyce L. (Mohr) Lofland. He married Karen Sander Feb. 23, 1974, at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Jim was a welder for McDonald Tank and Equipment Inc. for more than 40 years, and also formerly owned and operated Lofland Landscape Turf & Irrigation.
TOPEKA - John J. Gilkison, 92, former resident of Larned, for over 70 years, passed away in Topeka on Jan. 1, 2015, four days short of his 93rd birthday. Born on Jan. 5, 1922, in Larned, he was the son of Charles A. and Olga Sjogren Gilkison. In 1939, he graduated from Zook High School and attended Kansas State University for two years.
Anthony C. "Tony" Huslig, 47, died Dec. 31, 2014, at his home in Great Bend. Born Sept. 18, 1967, in Pratt, he was the son of Bernard Louis "Hus" and Donna Joan "Jo" (Rose) Huslig. He married Kelly Adams in Great Bend. They later divorced. Raised in Great Bend and living in Kansas City until moving back to Great Bend in 2010, he was a Network Program Engineer.

Marvin J. Hipp, 61, died Jan. 3, 2015, at Lake Point Assisted Living, Wichita. He was born Sept. 1, 1953, at Great Bend, the son of Joseph Lawrence and Thelma Eileen (Fenn) Hipp. He worked for Gibson, Titus and Stafford and then was the parts counter manager for Straub International, for more than 30 years combined. He was a longtime Great Bend resident, recently living in Wichita.
HOISINGTON - Emerson J. Davis, 80, passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at the Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. He was born March 2, 1934, on the homestead in rural Galatia, Kan., the son of David and Lena (Hester) Davis. He attended school at Hoisington and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Newkirk on Oct. 8, 1953. He was a truck driver for Kansas Brick and Tile for many years, later working for Albion Township.
Joan Charles, 84, died Jan. 5, 2015, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 2, 1930, at Oswego, the daughter of Clyde and Evelyn (Claxton) Morain. She was a butcher at Don's Food Mart, Great Bend. Ms. Charles was a long-time Great Bend resident, also residing in McKinney, Texas, and Hutchinson.
CABIN JOHN, Md. - Lora Belle Renz passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Holy Cross Hospital in Maryland. She was born April 19, 1935, at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, to Arthur and Bessie (Nordman) Tammen of Albert. She grew up on a farm south of Albert and attended District II Country School.
