Ellen I. Baldwin, 79, died Jan. 7, 2016, at her home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 28, 1936, in Wauneta, Neb., she was the daughter of Jay C. and Olive (Michelson) Hays. She married Harold J. Wiesner. She later married Kent Baldwin on April 9, 1983, in Ellis. He survives. A Great Bend resident since 1967, coming from Ellis, she was a secretary for Dr. Kutina and a clerk at Dillon's. She enjoyed volunteering at St. Rose Health Center, and the Bloodmobile, as well as golfing and flower gardening.
DURANT, Iowa - Gary M. "Coach" DeLong, 73, died on Jan. 4, 2016, at his home. Born Oct. 2, 1942, in Cedarvale, he was raised by his loving mother Doris (Hampton) Gray. In 1960, he graduated from Claflin High School, then graduated with his teaching degree from Fort Hays State College in Hays. On April 12, 1969, he married Dixie Ann Hertach in Claflin.
Bernard Richard "Bernie" Schenk, 91, died Jan. 4, 2016, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Oct. 15, 1924, at Olmitz, the son of William and Emily (Spitzka) Schenk. He married Mary Jo Riedel May 20, 1953, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz. They were residents of Olmitz for 36 years, moving to Great Bend in 1989. From 1951 to 1980, Mr. Schenk served as a rural mail carrier at Olmitz. LYONS - Curtis S. Werner Sr., 56, died Jan. 2, 2016, at his residence in Lyons. Born Dec. 10, 1959, in Ellinwood, he was the son of Wayne Joseph and Julia A. Bever Werner. A lifetime resident of Rice County, having lived in Lyons, Chase, Raymond and Great Bend, he attended the Chase/Raymond School System. He worked at the Rice County Highway Department in road maintenance. On Feb. 12, 1977, he married Janie Martinez in Chase.
HOLYROOD - Elizabeth E. "Betty" Heitschmidt, 91, passed away Dec. 30, 2015. Born Jan. 24, 1924, on a farm near Geneseo, she was the daughter of William and Lillian Allen Bailey. She graduated from Ellsworth High School and then attended Fort Hays State. She began a teaching career in a one room school north of Holyrood. She taught many years as a teacher and substitute in the Holyrood school system. On Aug. 2, 1945, she married Marvin Heitschmidt in Ellsworth. He passed away Oct. 9, 1991. For 19 years, Elizabeth owned and operated Betty's dry good store in Holyrood.
LAWRENCE - John Eldon Montgomery, of Lawrence, died Dec. 26, 2015. For 90 years he blessed those around him with his passion for living. John was born in Junction City on Aug. 3, 1925, the only child of Chris and Esther Oegerle Montgomery. John enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17, prior to his graduation from high school in Junction City in 1943. LARNED - Ralph R. Wickstrom, 87, passed away Jan. 1, 2016, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation, Great Bend. He was born June 24, 1928, in Larned, the son of John and Lena Jantz Wickstrom. On Oct. 22, 1966, he married Verda Lea Thomas Mauney in Wichita. She passed away Dec. 8, 2006. He moved to rural Pawnee Rock in 1966 where he was a farmer.
Jack J. Ferrell, 65, died Dec. 24, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born May 22, 1950, at Great Bend, the son of "A. J." and Ruth Ferrell. A Great Bend resident, he was a retired truck driver for Linde Transport and a private pilot.
LARNED - Patricia A. (Gleason) Schartz, 80, passed away Dec. 30, 2015, at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center, Wichita. She was born October 23, 1935, to Leo P. and Ruth G. (Schlick) Gleason in Spearville. On March 2, 1957, she married A.W. (Bill) Schartz at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hodgeman County. He survives.
Donald H. Matthews, 87, died Dec. 31, 2015, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born Dec. 28, 1928, at Medicine Lodge, the son of Harry and Clara (Chambers) Matthews. Don married Mary Louise Powell Jan. 22, 1957, at Great Bend. She died Nov. 23, 2010.
