CLAFLIN - Margaret Julia Smith (Miller), 99, died Feb. 18, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born Feb. 26, 1917, at Claflin, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Carey) Miller. She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Claflin and graduated from Claflin High School. She married Warren T. Smith Aug. 17, 1936, at Claflin. He died Dec. 29, 1994. A lifetime Claflin resident, Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and worked at Komarek Jewelers in Great Bend as a sales associate.
CHANDLER, ARIZ. - Babette "Babs" Kinderknecht, age 61, passed away Feb. 10, 2017 surrounded by family in her home in Chandler, Ariz., after a long battle with diabetes and renal failure. She has embarked on her last travel to Heaven surrounded with Angels, to be with her Heavenly Father. Babette retired from American Airlines and worked in different capacities for the company.
Eugene Ernest Hallett, 84, died Feb. 16, 2017, at his home in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 6, 1933, at Rush Center, the son of Ernest Glen and Zelma Mae (Moore) Hallett. He married Carol E. Ochs Sept. 22, 1956, at LaCrosse. He was a maintenance worker at the Mullergren Plant for 35 years and a lifelong farmer at Rush Center. He was a resident of Great Bend. Mr. Hallett was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Alfred M. Reichuber, 96, died Feb. 17, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Feb. 27, 1920, at Odin, the son of Sebastian and Wilhelmina (Huslig) Reichuber. He married Leona Antonia Stoss May 15, 1946, at Olmitz. She died March 13, 2015. A lifetime area resident, Mr. Reichuber was a carpenter. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.
Delbert L. Adams Jr. died on Feb. 13, 2017 at Hays Medical Center. He was born Sept. 5, 1961 in Great Bend, the son of Judy (Whithington) and Delbert L. Adams Sr. He married Jill (Hensley) and had a son Dustin (Kirstin-girlfriend) of Seattle Wash. He then had four sons Micheal, Greg, Jamison all of Manhattan, and Dalton of Valley Center with his then companion Jamie.
Kevin Lynn Habiger, 44, died unexpectedly on Feb. 9, 2017, at Wichita. Born June 27, 1972, at Great Bend, he was the son of Sylvester "Bud" and Sandra (Brougher) Habiger. He was a 1991 graduate of Great Bend High School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, scouting and a variety of other activities with friends and family. After graduating from high school, he obtained a commercial driver's license and worked in the trucking and transport business. He moved to Wichita where he was employed most recently in shipping and order fulfillment for Amazon in nearby Coffeyville.
OTIS - Berniece Kay "Berni" Funk, 63, died Feb. 15, 2017, at her home in rural Otis. Born Oct. 6, 1953, at Ness City, she was the daughter of Frank and Albertina (Flax) Fehrenbach. On June 7, 1987, she married Randall Lee "Randy" Funk on the family farm. He died in September 2004. A long time Otis area resident, she owned and operated Berni's Country Beauty Salon. She enjoyed gardening, and spending time with her dogs, family and customers.
BILLINGS, Okla. - Robert Edward Guertin, 72, died Feb. 13, 2017, at his home. Born Aug. 4, 1944, in Southbridge, Mass., he was the son of Robert P. and Cecilia B. Guertin. He lived in Great Bend for many years and worked as a jailer at the Great Bend Sheriff Department. He was loved by many in the community. Robert enjoyed all kinds of racing and laughter with family and friends.
Larry Dean Shaw, 61, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017. An avid KU basketball fan and fisherman, Larry loved people, family gatherings, attending yearly NCAA basketball tournaments with his son, and was always helping others.
Gerald Dean Dixon, 85, died Feb. 16, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Dec. 20, 1931, at Pawnee Rock, the son of Fredrick Earl and Gladys (Ermel) Dixon. He married Helene Ann Elizabeth Freeman Sept. 30, 1963, at Miami, Okla. She died March 11, 2016. A longtime Great Bend resident, Mr. Dixon was a truck driver for Marlette Homes and AirCo Industrial Gases. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
HUTCHINSON - Elmo Merritt, 89, died Feb. 15, 2017, at Pleasant Hills Home, Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 13, 1927, in Gorman, Texas, to Edward and Della (Echols) Merritt. Elmo graduated from Moran High School, Texas, in 1947 and Fort Hays State University. On Aug. 15, 1948, he married Lola D. Kellogg. She died September 1988. He then married Ermalee Taylor on Nov. 24, 1990, in Great Bend. They shared 26 years of marriage. Elmo was an elementary education teacher and principal for over 40 years.
Donna Jean Schrepel, 66, died Feb. 14, 2017, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. She was born June 6, 1950, at Manitowoc, Wis., the daughter of Norman and Gertrude (Riesterer) Trinka. She married Alvin Frederick Schrepel Jr. on May 31, 1969, at San Diego, Calif. A Great Bend resident since 1974, coming from San Diego, Mrs. Schrepel was Jefferson School lunchroom manager for Unified School District 428. She collected elephants.
VINCENT - Marian M. (Kuhlman) Rajewski, 87, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at Sterling Presbyterian Manor in Sterling. She was born March 30, 1929, on the family farm north of Olmitz, to Ewald W. and Rose L. (Schwartz) Kuhlman. She married James W. Rajewski on May 22, 1951, in Olmitz. He died April 9, 2015.
