LARNED - John "Pat" Patrick Keeley, 90, passed away Aug. 1, 2015, at the Catholic Care Center, Bel Aire, Kansas. Born Nov. 21, 1924, in Larned, he was the son of James Edward and Leeta McConnaughhay Keeley. A lifetime area resident, he was a police officer and State Parole Officer, after serving in combat during WWII as a paratrooper in the Army.
Mary Lee Reed, 91, died on Friday afternoon, July 24, 2015, at her home. Born on Dec. 31, 1923, in McGhee, Ark., she was the daughter of Frank and Mary Etta (Adams) Moffit Washington. On Dec. 7, 1941, she was united in marriage to Abe Reed Sr. in Snow Lake, Ark. He died on Jan. 23, 1988. The family moved to Great Bend in 1946, where she was a long-time resident. OTIS - Eudale Brack, 88, died July 25, 2015, at Locust Grove Nursing Home in LaCrosse. Born Sept. 1, 1926, in Alva, Okla. he was the son of Herman E. and Alma A. (Brack) Brack. On Sept. 12, 1945, he married Magdalene T. Tuzicka at Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis. She past away on Dec. 19, 2012. A lifetime Otis resident, he served as Mayor of Otis from 1963 to 1995, while working as a carpenter, farmer, and operating the Otis Cafe with his wife from 1964 to 1997. HOLYROOD - Grace (Wilkens) Johnson, 77, passed away on July 25, 2015, at her home in Holyrood. Born Nov. 7, 1937, in Lorraine, she was the daughter of Clarence and Helen (Kruse) Wilkens. On Aug. 30, 1958, Grace married Richard E. Johnson. He preceded her in death. A resident of Holyrood since 2005, moving from the farm three miles east of town, she was a housewife. She worked part-time at Quivira Heights Jr. High School in the computer lab.
Steven J. Thomas, 58, passed away at his home in Great Bend on July 24, 2015. Steve was born on July 1, 1957, at Hutchinson, to Glen L. and Patty L. (Herndon) Thomas. He grew up in Lebanon, Kansas, and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1975. In 1976 he moved to Great Bend and attended Barton County Community College, where he obtained an Associate of Science degree.
LARNED – Linda O. Zielke, 66, passed away July 23, 2015, at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned. She was born Nov. 4, 1948, in Greene, New York, the daughter of Leonard and Thelma Pierce Oles. A longtime area resident, she was a homemaker.
CHASE - Florentine L. Oberle, 96, died July 20, 2015, at Rice Co. Hospital in Lyons. She was born on April 22, 1919, in Ellinwood, to Peter and Anna (Straub) Kimpler. She married George Oberle on Aug. 23 1937, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church north of Ellinwood. He died August 1955. She later married Tony Oberle on Oct. 31, 1959, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church north of Ellinwood. He died March 21, 1995.
TOPEKA - Norman William Koester, 68, of Topeka, died July 19, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital. He was born on Sept. 2, 1946, in Hoisington, the son of William and Helen (Langer) Koester. He retired from Washburn University after 25 years as an Electronic Technician. Norm had previously worked for Goodyear and had owned and operated Norm's TV and Organ Repair.
