PAWNEE ROCK - Florence Evelyn Johnson, 91, passed away Jan. 10, 2017, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born March 2, 1925, in Fowler, she was the daughter of Robert Lee and Evelyn Rose Chipman Stillwell. On Aug. 17, 1942, she married Carl August Johnson in Kingman. Moving from Cunningham in 1957 she was a lifetime area resident of Pawnee Rock. She was a GBM Welder. She loved baking, reading, doing crossword puzzles, sewing, plants, gardening, loved her dogs, and most of all loved her children, grandkids and great-grandkids.
OTIS - Betty Lou Mootz, 90, died Jan. 10, 2017, at Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse. Born Feb. 9, 1926, in rural Barton County, she was the daughter of Herman L. and Pauline (Reinhardt) Brack. She was a graduate of Otis Rural High School and Salt City Business College in Hutchinson. On May 8, 1949, she married Robert L. Mootz at the Otis United Methodist Church. He died July 13, 1992. LARNED - Debra Jean (Dreiling) Robinson, 53, passed away Jan. 10, 2017, at Hays Medical Center. Born July 29, 1963, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Ralph and Anna Marie (Peg) Turner Dreiling. A longtime area resident she was an Assistant Manager at Pizza Hut of Larned.
WICHITA - Patricia Laura Moore, 89, passed away on Jan. 6, 2017. Born Dec. 10, 1927, at Claflin, she was the daughter of Tony and Mary Straub. She was the last surviving sibling from her family of nine children, Ray Straub, Delores Schochtermeyer, Milton Straub, Bernadine Bridges, Katherine Straub, Vernon Straub, Walter Straub, and Dorothy Hamilton. ST. JOHN - Emerson Henry Shields, 92, passed away Jan. 6, 2017, at the Stafford County Hospital. Born Sept. 18, 1924, at McPherson, he was the son of Martin I. and Augusta (Barre) Shields. At the time of Emerson's passing, he was the oldest practicing attorney in Kansas and owner of Shields Law Office in St. John. He attended a year at Emporia State Teachers College where he played football. Delores I. "Dee" Potts, 82, died Jan. 6, 2017, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. Born May 26, 1934, at Great Bend, she was the daughter of August Henry "Gus" and Ethel May (Doonan) Gagelman. She married Loy Eugene "Gene" Potts in July 1970 at Great Bend. He died April 17, 2013.
William K. "Bill" McCoy, 86, died Jan. 6, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Nov. 25, 1930, at Norton, the son of George and Margaret (Maher) McCoy. He married Betty J. Zimmerman May 5, 1962, at Great Bend. A long-time Great Bend resident, coming from Norton, Mr. McCoy managed Burke's Shoe Store and later owned and operated McCoy's Shoe Store.
Mary Elizabeth Boyle, 96, died Jan. 6, 2017, at her home with her family by her side. She was born on Sept. 6, 1920 at Wilsall, Mont., to Paul Vestal and Matilda (Allan) Smith. She was the fourth of five children born to this pioneering couple. She grew up in Salina on the family dairy farm.
STAFFORD – Georgine Weber, 68, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at Pratt Health and Rehabilitation in Pratt. Born on Feb. 16, 1948, she was the daughter of Luther and Dorothy (Miller) Beshears. On Nov. 27, 1965 she married Edwin Weber in Great Bend. He died March 30, 1995.
Lucille Kathryn Hickel Branan, 90, died Jan. 2, 2017, at Hopewest Hospice, Grand Junction, Colo. Born Nov. 3, 1926, at Redwing, she was the daughter of Emil and Magdelena (Courange) Hickel. She married Leo A. Kaiser April 24, 1945, at Beaver. He died Sept. 29, 1961. She then married R. L. "Bob" Branan Jan. 15, 1973, at Claflin. He died Apr. 26, 2008. Mrs. Branan was a lifetime resident of Barton County.
Sandra Lee "Sandy" Monroe, 71, passed away peacefully Dec. 14, 2016, at her family home of 60 years in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 10, 1945 in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Roy E. and Marie H. Lindsey. A Great Bend resident since 1947 and graduate of Great Bend High School, Sandy was a custodian at First United Methodist Church for 23 years. Previously she served as the director of Let's Help soup kitchen and as a meat wrapper for Dillons in Topeka.
Lawrence F. "Larry" Weiser, 97, passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 2017, at his Great Bend residence. He was born Sept. 4, 1919, at Odin, the son of Rudolph J. and Mary Louise (Grellinger) Weiser. He was a 1939 graduate of Odin High School and then attended St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays, until he was drafted into the United States Army in the summer of 1941. He was a decorated World War II combat veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater, and was involved in the liberation of the Philippine Islands in 1945.
Bernadine Schultz, 67, died Jan. 4, 2017, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Born April 7, 1949, at Stockton, she was the daughter of Harold and Iola (Cahail) Schultz. A Great Bend resident since 1968, she was an LPN. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
