LARNED - Inez Leona (Birzer) Giessel, 90, passed away Sept. 29, 2016, at the Arbor Court Retirement Community in Topeka. She was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Rural Barton County, a mile east of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, north of Ellinwood, the 16th of 18 children born to Joseph and Mathilda (Beran) Birzer. She graduated from the eighth grade at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School. On Feb. 11, 1947, she married John Jacob Giessel and they began their life together on the farm northwest of Larned. He passed away April 13, 1985.
Joe Harold Spears, 54, died Sept. 24, 2016, at Great Bend. Born Feb. 27, 1962, at Yuma, Ariz., he was the son of John Leo and Helen (West) Spears. On April 1, he married Sheryl Miller at Great Bend. A Great Bend resident since 2005, coming from Mesa, Ariz., he was a truck driver and owned and operated J & S Handyman Service. He enjoyed truck driving, camping, fishing and hunting.
RUSSELL - Wilmer H. Boxberger, 90, passed away Sept. 24, 2016, at the Main Street Manor in Russell. Born Sept. 20, 1926, he was the son of Herman and Pauline (Funk) Boxberger. He attended schools in Russell, graduating with the class of 1944. On Oct. 26, 1947, he married Estella Deines at St. John Lutheran Church. He farmed and raised cattle through the years until the mid 1970's. Carolyn June Butts, 88, died Sept. 24, 2016, at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 22, 1928, at Larned, she was the daughter of Ralph and Pearl Lena (Dirks) Unruh. On Aug. 15, 1946, she married Joseph Oral Butts at Great Bend. They later divorced. She was an LPN at Larned State Hospital.
KAHULUI, Hawaii - Mark Edward (Lane) Shaw, 62, of Kahului, Hawaii, passed away Aug. 31, 2016, at his home with loved ones by his side. He was born in Larned on Feb. 26, 1954. Mark attended high school in Great Bend, and graduated from Buhler High School in 1972. He then joined the Air Force, and was honorably discharged in 1974. Mark moved from Kansas to Phoenix, Ariz. where his three children were born and raised. Years later he moved to Kahului on the island of Maui and joined the staff of Dorvin D. Leis Co. as Chief Estimator.
DENVER, Colo. - Richard K. Marshall, 68, passed away Sept. 15, 2016. He was diagnosed with cancer in July. Born on Sept. 3, 1948, in Great Bend, Richard moved to Denver in 1971 after graduating from Kansas State University. He met his wife, Margaret, during the first month he arrived and they married in 1972. They have three children, Jonathan, Charles and Elizabeth. He was a landscape architect, planner and urban designer with over 40 years of experience throughout the United States. Larry Hinderliter of Great Bend passed away on Sept. 16, 2016, at the age of 72. He was born on Aug. 25, 1944, to Heber Pickering and Eva Monahan Pickering in Kinsley. After the death of his father when he was a young child, he was adopted by Roy Hinderliter. He married Shirley Jones Hinderliter from Studley in 1967 and settled in Great Bend.
STERLING - Martha L. Knight, 77, died Sept. 21, 2016, at Presbyterian Manor, Sterling. Born Oct. 6, 1938, in Hoisington she was the daughter of Harry Oliver and Esther Layle Howell Martin. On Sept. 25, 1958, she married Robert Knight at Lyons. He proceeded her in death on Oct. 31, 1984. She was a Sterling resident for 53 years. She was a bookkeeper and clerk at Brock Pharmacy and also was a dog breeder.
CLAFLIN - Helen M. Zorn, 95, died Sept. 19, 2016, at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia. Born Aug. 2, 1921, in Redwing she was the daughter of Frank and Anna (Demel) Koester. In 1940, she graduated from Odin High School. On March 4, 1943, she married Frank F. Zorn, at San Carlos Catholic Church, Monterey, Calif. He preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 2000. A longtime resident of Claflin moving to Emporia in 2013, she was a homemaker and also worked for EL-KAN retiring in 1977.
OSKALOOSA - Marcia "Lee" Mitchell, 61, died Sept. 19, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Born Nov. 3, 1954, in Kinsley, she was the daughter of Eugene and Grace Kreft Rothenberger. In 1972 she graduated from Great Bend High School. On Nov. 28, 1975, she married Tommy Eugene Mitchell in Girard. He survives of the home. She worked in Information technology as payroll secretary, accounts receivable and compliance for the Topeka Foundry and Ironworks for the last 14 years. She also worked at the F.W.
