TIMKEN - Berniece P. Stejskal, 85, Timken, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. Mrs. Stejskal was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Rush Center, the daughter of L. V. and Bertha (Cunningham) Reynolds. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County. A 1949 graduate of La Crosse High School, she was a dietary aide at Great Bend Manor, Great Bend, for 11 years, and she was an assembly worker for 14 years at the La Crosse Furniture Factory, La Crosse, while working along side her husband on the family farm near Timken.
Marilyn J. (Davis) Hawk-Warkentine, 86, was promoted to her eternal home on Jan. 17, 2017, at Diversicare of Larned. Born Feb. 18, 1930, at Kinsley, she was the daughter of Leslie S. and Rita L. Sanford Davis. In 1935, she moved to Larned. On Dec. 12, 1946, she married Lewis Junior Hawk at Sterling. Four children were born to this union, Lorrene, Darrell, Marilyn L. and Vicki. She was a devoted wife and stay-at-home mother while her children were young. She worked various jobs while her children were in their high school years. Steven J. Bloyd, 75, died Jan. 18, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Dec. 19, 1941, at Fairbury, Neb., the son of Donald E. and Valentine (Dickerson) Bloyd. He married Judy Hilger July 14, 1964, at Lakin. He was an electrician for ElPaso Corporation.
Alvera Ann Tinkel, 92, died Jan. 17, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born Oct. 14, 1924, at Ellinwood, the daughter of Jacob and Pauline (Wess) Melcher. She married Frank Tinkel Jr., June 21, 1948, at Ellinwood. He died Dec. 11, 1985. A Great Bend resident since 1974, coming from Albert, she was a homemaker.
HOLYROOD - Raymond Lee "Ray" Hanken, 73, died Jan. 18, 2017, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born June 21, 1943, at Great Bend, the son of Frederick and Alice (Horst) Hanken. Ray married Patricia J. Freeburg July 27, 1963, at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Albert.
Jeanine Lunsford, 78, died Jan. 18, 2017, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born June 5, 1938, at Enid, Okla., she was the daughter of Frank B. and Audrey Fern (Whitaker) Cluster. On June 9, 1956, she married Larry Dean Lunsford at Great Bend. He died March 14, 2013. A lifetime Great Bend resident, she was owner and operator of the Great Bend Dairy Queen. She enjoyed painting and antiquing.
GARFIELD - Mary "Charlene" Hainer, 56, passed away Jan. 17, 2017, at BSA Health System in Amarillo, Texas. Born Sept. 11, 1960, in Larned, she was the daughter of Charles Clement and Mary Louise Hall Lange. On May 20, 1979, she married Jesse Dean Hainer in Larned. He survives. A longtime area resident, she was a happy homemaker, beloved and dedicated wife of 37 years. She enjoyed reading, puzzles and crafts, including tatting, crocheting and painting. Throughout the years while traveling with her husband, Jesse, they accumulated an extravagant rock collection from all over the U.S.A.

LARNED - Mary Frances (Brown) Craven died Jan. 6, 2017, at Diversicare in Larned. Born Sept. 29, 1927, in Hays, she was the daughter of John A. and Dorothy Ruth (Lacey) Brown. She grew up on the family farm just west of Russell. In 1945 she graduated from Russell High School. On April 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Arthur Loyd "Red" Craven at Emporia. He died on May 2, 1993. She worked for her husband's plumbing business, answering the phone and taking messages.
Leon A. Werth, 81, died Jan. 16, 2017, at Almost Home, Inc., Great Bend. He was born Feb. 10, 1935, at Schoenchen, the son of Adolph and Serbina (Zimmerman) Werth. He married Joan E. Werth Aug. 30, 1955, at Schoenchen. A Great Bend resident since 1963, coming from Pratt, Mr. Werth was owner and operator of Leon Werth Plumbing, Heating and Air.
GREAT BEND -- Elizabeth A. "Liz" Stambaugh, 76, died Jan. 15, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born July 4, 1940, in Barton County, the daughter of Clifford John and LaVerne Louise (Lewis) Ellis. She married Monte Gene Stambaugh March 19, 1959, at Ellinwood. A Great Bend resident since 1958, Mrs. Stambaugh worked for the Barton County Clerk's office and was a bookkeeper and worked in parts for Hugo's Repair.
