STAFFORD – Georgine Weber, 68, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at Pratt Health and Rehabilitation in Pratt. Born on Feb. 16, 1948, she was the daughter of Luther and Dorothy (Miller) Beshears. On Nov. 27, 1965 she married Edwin Weber in Great Bend. He died March 30, 1995.
Lucille Kathryn Hickel Branan, 90, died Jan. 2, 2017, at Hopewest Hospice, Grand Junction, Colo. Born Nov. 3, 1926, at Redwing, she was the daughter of Emil and Magdelena (Courange) Hickel. She married Leo A. Kaiser April 24, 1945, at Beaver. He died Sept. 29, 1961. She then married R. L. "Bob" Branan Jan. 15, 1973, at Claflin. He died Apr. 26, 2008. Mrs. Branan was a lifetime resident of Barton County.
Sandra Lee "Sandy" Monroe, 71, passed away peacefully Dec. 14, 2016, at her family home of 60 years in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 10, 1945 in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Roy E. and Marie H. Lindsey. A Great Bend resident since 1947 and graduate of Great Bend High School, Sandy was a custodian at First United Methodist Church for 23 years. Previously she served as the director of Let's Help soup kitchen and as a meat wrapper for Dillons in Topeka.
Lawrence F. "Larry" Weiser, 97, passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 2017, at his Great Bend residence. He was born Sept. 4, 1919, at Odin, the son of Rudolph J. and Mary Louise (Grellinger) Weiser. He was a 1939 graduate of Odin High School and then attended St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays, until he was drafted into the United States Army in the summer of 1941. He was a decorated World War II combat veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater, and was involved in the liberation of the Philippine Islands in 1945.
Bernadine Schultz, 67, died Jan. 4, 2017, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Born April 7, 1949, at Stockton, she was the daughter of Harold and Iola (Cahail) Schultz. A Great Bend resident since 1968, she was an LPN. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Consuelo "Connie" Rocha Burke, 82, died Jan. 2, 2017, at Trinity Manor in Dodge City. Born Sept. 13, 1934, at Lewis, she was the daughter of Jose C. and Manuela (Munoz) Castaneda. On July 23, 1988, she married Marion Lester "Les" Burke at Great Bend. He died Oct. 30, 2008. A Great Bend resident since 1953, she was a bartender at Great Bend Petroleum Club. She has resided in Dodge City since 2008.
Lois May Hill, 90, died Jan. 1, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Jan. 15, 1926, at Galatia, she was the daughter of Henry LaVern and Florence A. (White) Bryant. On June 2, 1946, she married Glenn Earl Hill at Great Bend. He died Aug. 31, 2012. A Great Bend resident most of her life, coming from Galatia, she was a bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward and the telephone office.
F. Duane Dugan, 90, died Jan. 1, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born July 11, 1926, at Fort Scott, he was the son of Harry and Frances (Pellett) Dugan. He married Roberta Simpson Sept. 17, 1955, at Fort Scott. A Great Bend resident since January 1965, coming from Fort Scott, Mr. Dugan worked in law enforcement for 57 years.
Mary A. McKay, 95, passed away peacefully Dec. 20, 2016. She was born to Herb and Faye Clowers in St. John, on Oct. 18, 1921, and grew up on a farm near Zook. After graduating Zook High School, Mary completed nurse's training at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, and joined the Army Nurse Corp in 1942. She served in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines during WWII, where she met David J. McKay. They were married on Jan. 30, 1946.
HOISINGTON - David G. Zamarripa, 64, died Dec. 30, 2016, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born Dec. 19, 1952, in Edinburg, Texas, the son of Juan and Elisa (Gonzalez) Zamarripa. David graduated from Edinburg High School and then received his business accounting degree from the University of Texas-Pan American. He served in the United States Army from 1972 to 1978.
OVERLAND PARK - Frances (Rosander) Burns, 99, died Dec. 18, 2016, in Overland Park. Born Aug. 14, 1917, in Lindsborg she was the daughter of Emil and Ellen Rosander. She graduated from Bethany College, where she was an active debater. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage. Frances and her husband, Allen Burns, moved to Great Bend after World War II, and she spent nearly 30 years teaching elementary school students there and being involved in educational, church, and community organizations.
Neil J. Gorney, age 55 years, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away at his home in Great Bend on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 29, 2016. Neil was born on Feb. 10, 1961 in Bay City, Michigan to Melvin J. and Isabelle (Compton) Gorney.
