He graduated from Austonio High School in 1947, then moved to Houston, Texas, and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for three years.

LA CROSSE - Rex W. Hafenstine, 63, died Feb. 6, at his home. Born Aug. 28, 1951, in Quinter, he was the son of Walter Nelson and Mary I. (Armbruster) Hafenstine. He was a resident of La Crosse, for 24 years, moving from Hays. In 1970 he graduated from WaKeeney High School, and attended Fort Hays State University. On Dec. 15, 1990, he married Betty Horyna in La Crosse. In the 1990s, he was employed by KDWP. Later, as a driller in the oil industry, he was employed by Murfin Drilling Company for 32 years before his retirement .

A resident of Hoisington since 1951, coming from Jetmore, he was a driller, mechanic, and truck pusher, working for various oil companies, including Peel Bros. and Allen Drilling, retiring in 1991. She was born in 1931 in Shickley, Nebraska, the daughter of Dan and Elsie (Birkey) Roth. She married DeWayne Winterlin on Aug. 21, 1954, in Iowa City, Iowa. He died June 20, 2000. She attended Wheaton College and Moody Bible Institute. She was an LPN and worked as a nurse at the University of Iowa Hospital and later at nursing homes in Kansas.
