Janis Friedeman Sayler, 84, entered heaven on Sept. 25, 2015. She was born July 13, 1931, in Great Bend, where she spent most of her life raising her family. She was the secretary at Washington Elementary School until retirement. Janis was a devoted wife and mother, enthusiastic Christian, prayer warrior and founding member of Foundry Methodist Church.
HUTCHINSON - Marilyn J. Cleveland, 80, died Sept. 24, 2015, at Wellington Health and Rehab. Born Dec. 16, 1934, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Elton and Dorthea (Gregg) Nickel. In 1952, she graduated from Great Bend High School. On Sept. 30, 1956, she married Don Cleveland in Great Bend. He survives. She was a manager for Southwestern Bell and AT&T.
STAFFORD - Edwina "Lou" Girard, 72, died Sept. 28, 2015, at Stafford. Born March 17, 1943, in Lamar, Colo., she was the daughter of Stanley and Marie Jones Rogers. On July 15, 1961, she married LaVern "Curly" Girard in St. John. He died Jan. 22, 2008. She was employed at Stafford Schools as a cook for over 25 years.
LAKE WAUKOMIS, Mo. - Joyce Josephine "JoJo" Steiner McBroom, 71, passed away peacefully on Sept. 27, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospice House in Kansas City, after several wonderful weeks at home with Ronnie and visiting with family and friends during her illness. JoJo was born May 10, 1944, and was raised in Hoisington. She followed her dreams to Chicago to work for her beloved TWA Airlines and as a dance instructor for Fred Astaire. GREAT BEND - Russell C. Combs, 57, died Sept. 22, 2015, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Dec. 4, 1957, in Hutchinson, he was the son of Clarence "Chief" and Florence "Jean" (Berry) Combs. A resident of Great Bend, he owned and operated C&S Concessions, C&S Fireworks, C&S Tires, C&S Repo, Triple A Lockout and C&S Hotshot.
MESA, Ariz. - Jack Arnold DeWerff, 90, died Sept. 17, 2015, at his home in Mesa, Ariz. Born Nov. 16, 1924, in Ellinwood, he was the son of Hattie and John DeWerff. He was a lifelong resident of Ellinwood, before moving to Mesa, Ariz. eight years ago. On April 8, 1955, he married Loretta Tedford in Minneola. He was a farmer, rancher, and a working cowboy all of his life and also worked for the Kansas Animal Health Department for 20 years, serving livestock producers in 30 counties in southwest Kansas. SALINA - Bruce Wayne Arnold, 62, passed away Sept. 19, 2015, at Salina Regional Health Center. Born on Jan. 27, 1953, in Wichita, he was the son of the late Shirley Gene (Arnold) Long. He was the husband of Claudia R. (Helm) Arnold. He worked as an over the road truck driver for many years.
