Charles L. "Charlie" Crouse, 73, died Dec. 21, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Nov. 20, 1941, in Great Bend, he was the son of Jennings Bryant "J.B." and Bertha (Reed) Crouse. On Aug. 26, 1967, he married Jean Rush in Nashua, N.H. A long-time resident of Great Bend, also living in Nashua, N.H., he was employed by Nashua, N.H. Police Department, a truck driver for Big A Auto Parts and was a CNA for Elder Care. He was a sports enthusiast and loved his family, especially his grandchildren and his dogs.
HOLCOMB - Carey Lynn Christiansen-Noblitt, 41, died Thursday, Dec. 18. She was born July 13, 1973 in Gilroy, Calif. Carey lived in Hoisington and Great Bend before moving to Holcomb. She earned her associates degree in Dental Hygiene from Wichita State University and worked for Dr. Maples in Ulysses. She enjoyed spending time fishing and vacationing with her family. She also loved Christmas.
MIDLAND, Texas - Daniel John Leiker went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Dec. 20th. Born Dec. 2, 1928, in Russell, he was the son of Daniel Alexander Leiker and Hilda Weigel. On June 7, 1949, he married Joyce Marie Ewald in Ellinwood. He worked for Northern Natural Gas for over 39 years as a plant supervisor in Kansas and Kermit, Texas before retiring in Midland, Texas in 1986. He loved repairing car engines and carpentry work, even making his sons' toy trucks. His grandkids and great-grandkids could always depend on Grandpa Dan for quarters to fill their piggy banks ...

HUTCHINSON - Susan Marie Harms, 56, died Dec. 18 at her home in Hutchinson. Born Feb. 14, 1958, in McPherson, she was the daughter of Gustaf and Naomi Scheikofsky Nelson. She was a graduate of McPherson High School. On July 8, 1988, she married Robert Harms. He survives. She was a resident of Hutchinson the last 23 years.
Mabel E. Hiss, 91, died Dec. 18 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born April 9, 1923, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of August H. and Anna (Gagelman) Werhahn. On Oct. 29, 1944, she married her high school sweetheart, John R. Hiss. He died on Aug. 4, 2005. A lifetime Great Bend resident, she was a homemaker and also worked at the Great Bend Tribune during World War II. She attended Washburn University.
Darlene M. Creacy, 80, lifelong Great Bend resident, passed away on Tuesday evening, Dec. 16, at Leisure Homestead Care Center at St. John. Born on July 9, 1934, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Ira and Inez (Davis) Thomason. She attended school in Great Bend. She worked as a cook in several area restaurants, including at the Jayhawk Cafe, the Highland Hotel, and Holiday Inn, and was cook and former owner of the Zarah Cafe in Great Bend for many years. PRATT - Jon Travis Hartman, 74, died Dec. 13 at his home in Pratt. Born Oct. 1, 1940, in Pratt, he was the son of Charles Dwight and Helen Louise (Stiles) Hartman. He earned his Master of Science degree in Art from Fort Hays University and taught 35 years at Great Bend High School. He served on the Vernon Filley Art Museum Foundation Board of Directors for several years and remained as Emeritus Board Member.

Helen E. (Nickerson) Sharp, 81, died Dec. 13, at Diversicare of Larned. Born May 14, 1933, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Corbin and Elizabeth (Skirvin) Nickerson. On June 1, 1942, she married Bobby Dale Howard in Pratt. They were later divorced. She then married Robert Carl Sharp on June 21, 1975, in Great Bend. They were later divorced. A longtime resident of Great Bend, also residing in Las Vegas, Nev. and Larned, she served as a librarian and bus driver for the Radium School District and was a bookkeeper for Melvin Nuss. She enjoyed reading and sewing.

HOISINGTON - Eugene H. Bitter, 84, died Feb. 22, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. Born March 30, 1930, on the family farm near Susank, he was the son of Julius and Emilie (Schmidt) Bitter. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, Eugene was a farmer, stockman and fisherman.
ALBERT - LoRay D. George, 83, died Feb. 21, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in La Crosse. Born Sept. 1, 1931, in rural Albert he was the son of Herman "H. D." and Hilda "A. C." (Tammen) George. On Aug. 21, 1959, he married Anna Mae Wheeler at Peace Lutheran Church in Albert. She preceded him in death Feb. 3, 2002. A lifelong resident of Rush County he was a farmer.
LARNED - Larry L. Fleske, 55, passed away Feb. 20, at the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital in Larned. Born Oct. 9, 1959, in Great Bend, he was the son of Walter W. and Rena J. Eveleigh Fleske. On Jan. 14, 1989, he married Sharon L. Horne in Great Bend. She survives. A lifetime area resident of Larned he was farmer/stockman.
LARNED - Gerald P. (Short) Penka, 62, passed away Jan. 11, 2015, at his home in Norwood, Mass., following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

LARNED - Mary Beth Herrmann, 59, died on Feb. 18, at Diversicare of Larned. Born Feb. 23, 1955, in Kinsley, she was the daughter of Quentin J. and Lucy W. Tholen Herrmann. She graduated from Barton County Community College with an A.A. in Nursing and from Barclay College with a B.S. in Business Administration. A lifetime area resident, she was a Registered Nurse and Administrator at the Pawnee County Health Department.

BISON - Ella Marie Steitz was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Bison in Rush County, the daughter of Jacob and Ella (Schaumburg) Scheuerman. She was adopted and raised by her parents, Constain and Florence (Scheuerman) Steitz. She graduated from Bison High School in 1952 and attended Fort Hays College. After living in Denver, Colo. for 31 years, she retired from Shell Chemical and returned to Bison in 1988.
