CLAFLIN - The Community Scholarship, Inc. of Claflin awarded scholarships to nineteen graduates and nine alumni at the Central Plains High School on May 18, 2014. Many donors, alumni and organizations made it possible to award $32,113.00 to the graduates to help with their college expenses.
HOISINGTON - Walking or riding a bike is a healthy, wholesome activity, and students walking to and from school gives kids great outdoor exercise. USD 431 Hoisington School District has received a $10,000 grant for a Walking School Bus for the next school year. A Walking School Bus, where a parents walks with the kids to and from school, is one of the latest initiatives to get kids outside and combat obesity.
Each year the Kansas Preservation Alliance, Inc. recognizes exemplary efforts in historic preservation across the state of Kansas. The 2014 Awards for Excellence were presented May 9 at the Old Supreme Court in the Kansas Statehouse in Topeka. The restoration of the State Capitol building was recipient of first place. Second place went to Manweiler Chevrolet of Hoisington.
ELLINWOOD - Those 26-book encyclopedias and heavy dictionaries, once highly valued, have pass their expiration date in the Information Age as users find the Internet more convienient and up-to-date. Along with damaged books or books with out-of-date information, they are being repurposed as arts and craft items for decorating.
ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood Rotary Club in cooperation with the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce is in the process of organizing the After Harvest Festival parade held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 19. Line-up will begin at 9 a.m. on Park Street on the west edge of Ellinwood.
ELLINWOOD -At its most recent meeting, the USD 355 Board of Education approved hiring several employees for 2014-15. They were: Sheri Holmes, director of Library and Media Services; Kyla Smith, vocal music instructor; Shatlyn Marshall, 4th grade teacher; and Russell Schadel, grade school custodian.
HOISINGTON - Clara Barton Hospital Foundation will "Race to the Finish" with its 21st Annual Benefit – Golf Tournament, Dinner and Auction, Friday, June 13 to support its Therapy Services and Laundry Expansion project, currently under construction in Hoisington.
