Council to interview candidates

HOISINGTON - Four individuals have expressed interest in becoming city council members in Ward 4, the Hoisington City Council heard Monday night. They will be interviewed at the regular Oct. 24 council meeting by the council, which meets at 7:30 p.m.

EDH to hold free estate planning seminar

ELLINWOOD - A free estate planning seminar, sponsored by the Ellinwood Area Health Foundation, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Ellinwood District Hospital Education Room. Morris Laing Attorneys will discuss the importance of estate planning, recent tax changes and the impact such changes have on estate planning. Seating is limited. Business seeks to donate electronic scoreboard to USD 355

ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood School Board heard at its regular meeting this week that a local business is raising funds to donate an electronic scoreboard for the football field. The estimated cost is $16,000. The old one is from 1987 but was beginning to show its age, said Superintendent Ben Jacobs.

Ellinwood debaters win open division at tournament

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood High School Debaters Connor Birzer and Jenna Snell won the open division of the Arrowhead Invitational Tournament held at Hays High School on Sat., Oct. 8. The duo posted a 5-0 win-loss record and was the only team in the open division to have a perfect record. In the novice division, Rachel Doll and Rachel Schloctermeier also went 5-0 and placed 2nd, missing first place by only a few speaker points. In individual speaking awards, Birzer placed 4th in the open division. Doll was the top speaker out of all 78 novice debaters competing in the tournament. The ...

Four Kansas Schools receive $5,000 to teach wind energy

CLAFLIN - USD 112 Central Plains School District is one of four school districts in the state to receive $5,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development to install a 1.9 kilowatt wind turbine to educate students on the importance of wind energy as an alternative energy source and to promote rural jobs.

Claflin Twisted Stitchers sew baby blankets

CLAFLIN - Claflin's quilting group, Twisted Stitchers, recently met for work sessions to make 95 receiving blankets for Barton County Health Department nurses to distribute at home visits along with vital Sudden Infant Death Syndrome prevention education. Nurses stress that babies should be swaddled correctly and always be placed on their backs and facing up to help prevent SIDS.
