Welcome to the 4th edition of Marsh Musings. This week we will be focusing on a critter that carries a very negative stigma in the state of Kansas: the black-tailed prairie dog. Kansans' tend to either love or hate these critters. In Kansas, especially Western Kansas, prairie dogs are known as a destructive pest.

HOISINGTON - The Hoisington City Council heard good news last night when the Hoisington Community Development Corporation announced that they had a home and farm business considering opening a location in Hoisington in the old Duckwall store. It would create six new jobs for Hoisington.
HOISINGTON - The City of Hoisington is applying to become designated as an E-Community. When a community becomes designated as an E-Community, their donors help them to create a $125,000 in 75% Entrepreneurship Tax Credits.
Ellinwood Police Department monthly report for July Approximately 126 calls for service and 93 officer initiated calls were received for the month of July. Officers responded to 20 medical/fire calls and worked two non-injury accidents. Three arrests were made and four criminal summonses were served in the month of July. HOISINGTON - The 28th annual Kansas State Demolition Derby will be held Sunday, Sept. 4 during this year's four-day Labor Day Weekend in Hoisington. ELLINWOOD - Last August, Ellinwood had serious problems with flooding after torrential rains, particularly on the north side of town. The city has narrowed engineering firm choices to one and is in negotiations with them.
Ellinwood Library announces holiday hours
ELLINWOOD - Four juveniles were apprehended in Ellinwood for shooting out car windows Monday between 6-8 p.m., according to Ellinwood Police Chief Art Keffer. There are 11 reported cases at press time from within the city limits.
HOISINGTON - The Hoisington City Council approved two new water wells for the Hoisington Recreation Commission for the Legion Field and softball diamond at Bicentennial Park at its regular meeting on Monday.
HOISINGTON -The Hoisington Swinging Stars will host a square dance at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Hoisington city auditorium at 1st and Main Streets in Hoisington.
PAWNEE ROCK - The Hoisington High School Student Council recently spent the day at Praise Ranch in Pawnee Rock in a service learning project. Twelve students and Principal Meg Wilson assisted with clean up of the gymnasium at the old Pawnee Rock Elementary School.

HOISINGTON - At its regular meeting on Monday, the USD 431 heard a report from board member Deb Stephens on a new K-6 after school program which, she said, "is a desperate need in the community." It would be held at the Hoisington United Methodist Church on school evenings until 6:30 p.m.
Winter is officially here! The weather has cooled down, and some of the best little hunters have appeared on the scene. The short-eared owls are here! I saw the first one of this year yesterday evening at dusk on the Redwing Road. It is the time of the aerial hunters. Hawks, eagles, falcons and owls can be seen with a little patience.
