St. Joes celebrates Catholic Schools Week
ELLINWOOD- In celebration of Catholic Schools Week, St. Joseph Catholic School in Ellinwood held a full week of activities. In addition, the school is celebrating 125 years of education.

KSU Ag Profitability Conference to be held in Hoisington
HOISINGTON - The Barton County Extension Council will host the 2011 Kansas State University Ag Profitability Conference on Feb. 16 at the Knights of Columbus in Hoisington. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A noon lunch will be served. The cost for the conference is $5 if registered by Feb. 7, $10 if registered by Feb. 14 and $15 at the door. Register at the Barton County Extension Office or call 620-793-1910.
Colson named to CBH position
HOISINGTON - Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington has named, Curt Colson, as its new president and chief executive officer. A come-and-go welcome reception will be held on Feb. 16 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Turnbull Safe Room. All are invited to come and meet Colson.
Superior Essex wins SHARP safety award
HOISINGTON -Continual improvement is important in all aspects of business, and the safety arena is no exception. On Jan. 26, Superior Essex was recognized by the Kansas Department of Labor, Division of Industrial Safety and Health, as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, for exceptional safety practices, achievements, and employee commitment toward a safe work environment.

The Ellinwood Historical Society will hold a dinner at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 at the Senior Heritage Center.
HMS celebrates Kansas Day
HOISINGTON - Hoisington Middle School students celebrated Kansas Day with a couple of hands-on activities. The first activity was making homemade whole-wheat yeast rolls for the entire student body. Students from Susan Lowry's and Tina Johnson's classes made four batches of yeast rolls.

CLAFLIN - Studying the lives of bees, along with other creatures, Claflin Elementary School students learned all about Kansas state facts from the educators at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center on Thursday last week.

EHS participates in forensics competition
ELLINWOOD - Members of the Ellinwood High School Forensics Team competed at the Smoky Valley High School Invitational on Jan. 29. Though EHS only entered a few students into the 20-team meet, each of Ellinwood's speakers placed in the top six.

Board hears community strategic planning report
HOISINGTON - The USD 431 Comprehensive Planning Committee, which were citizens of Hoisington appointed by school board members, met earlier this April to discuss strengths and weaknesses of USD 431, at a meeting facilitated by Kansas Association of School Board Deputy Director Dr. Doug Moeckel. They presented their ideas to the school board on Monday night.

John Carmon Ellison 1955-2013
John Carmon Ellison of Allen, Texas, 57, passed away on May 30, 2013. He was born on Sept. 3, 1955, in Fort Stewart, Ga., the son of John and Dee Ellison. On Nov. 28, 1995, John married Phyllis Taylor in Great Bend. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. John was also very proud of his police work; he started the SWAT program in Great Bend. John loved barbecue and cooking out, but most of all, he loved his family. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.

HOISINGTON - Hoisington Cemetery employees request that all arrangements and grave decorations on the ground and not at the head of the grave be removed to allow for maintenance of the grounds by Monday, June 10.
Ellinwood June Jaunt was a success
ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood streets bustled with activity at the second annual June Jaunt in Ellinwood. Out-of-county license plates filled the parking lots in the city, and that, said Nancy Baird Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce director, was a sign of success.
