Claflin celebrates Memorial Day, Ambulance Service

CLALFIN - On a windy Memorial Day, Claflin residents and former Claflin residents were present at the Claflin Cemetery to commemorate those who died in military service and, in a separate ceremony, the beginning of the Claflin Ambulance Service.

Hoisington requests cemetery arrangements be removed

Hoisington Cemetery Employees request that all arrangements and graves decorations on the ground and not at the head of the grave be removed to allow for maintenance of the grounds.

Hoisington trolley service in need of volunteers

HOISINGTON - A valuable service to Hoisington residents is the trolley service which is provided by volunteers. For only 25 cents, residents can ride the trolley anywhere within a mile of the city limits of Hoisington.

USD 431 hires staff

HOISINGTON - USD 431 Board of Education hired staff for several positions for the 2011-12 school year at a special meeting on Thursday. Jeb Detter was hired for fourth grade instructor; Miriam Bolyard for Spanish instructor; Katrina Edgerton for 4-year-old pre-school instructor; Bridgette Schneweis for .6 Title position; Janel Rugan for .4 Title position; Kathy Hoffman for .4 elementary counselor, Steve Husted for custodian to begin immediately and Zach Baird for summer weights assistant this summer.

Barton offers morning Leadership Excellence Series in Hoisington

Barton Community College will offer a Leadership Excellence Series presenting four sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at Superior Essex, 75 E. State Rd. 4, Hoisington. The fee for the four sessions is $65, which includes the workshops, training materials and refreshments.

Clara Barton Foundation looking to hit a “big drive for cardiac equipment”

HOISINGTON - The 18th annual Clara Barton Hospital Foundation's Golf Benefit is looking to hit a "big drive for Cardiac Equipment." On Friday, June 17, the Foundation will hold its annual event to raise vital funding to replace aging cardiac equipment in the Emergency Room. Cardiac Care equipment is vital to the monitoring, diagnosis and treatment of our cardiac patients and is extraordinarily expensive. The Golf Tournament will be held Friday, June 17, at Lake Barton Golf Course with tees time beginning at 8 a.m. Organize your four person team and participate in a fun-filled golf scramble.

EHS students receive awards

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood High School band senior member Nick Espinosa was the recipient of the nationally acclaimed John Philip Sousa Band Award. This award is given to the most outstanding senior band student. It recognizes those young musicians displaying superior musicianship, leadership, dependability, loyalty, cooperation and other qualities of conduct which school instrumental music programs strives to impart.

USD 355 builds bus barn

ELLINWOOD - USD 355 Ellinwood Board of Education has purchased property, 901 E. Santa Fe, in Ellinwood to begin building a bus barn. The property was purchased from the City of Ellinwood for $15,000 and dirt work is done, the BOE heard at its regular meeting.
