HOISINGTON - Gardeners of the Hoisington Community Garden will be meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 6:30 pm. in the back room of the Hoisington Pizza Hut. They will talk about how they will get started with the garden next spring. Food raised from this project will be given out to the people of our community that love to eat healthy garden vegetables. This project is endorsed by the Healthy Ministries Committee of the United Methodist Church, the Hoisington Food Bank and the Hoisington Ministerial Alliance.

HOISINGTON - Both Hoisington Middle School and Hoisington High School established Kansas Association for Youth clubs in their buildings this year. KAY is an organization, offered through the Kansas State High School Activity Association, that teaches leadership and character through service. Each year these clubs earn points for the various projects that they do for school, community, nation and world. Both Hoisington clubs have chosen to earn the gold award. To earn the gold award there are several requirements one of which is earning 1,000 points in service.
Ellinwood Rec to offer make and wrap gift class
HOISINGTON - To promote awareness of the Barton County-wide teen binge drinking problem, the Hoisington City Council and USD 431 will have a joint meeting on Jan. 3, 2011 at the Hoisington Activity Center. The state-wide Communities That Care survey showed that Barton County is higher than state average in binge drinking and liquor during the last 30 days.
Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation has announced that a fund has been established for 23-month-old Kaito Richter, Great Bend, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. He is undergoing chemotherapy treatment in Wichita. He is the son of Amber Beverley and Nick Richter, Great Bend.
HOISINGTON - The city of Hoisington has received complaints about trash polycarts being left on the street long after trash pickup days, and, as a result is considering new rules.
ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood High School Forensics Team placed 6th at a tournament held at Southeast of Saline on Saturday, Feb. 22.
ELLINWOOD -The Ellinwood School/Community Library is excited to welcome national award winning author Cynthia Kadohata to the Ellinwood library for a series of events during the first week of March. The schedule of events includes presentations to student groups, student book signings, and question and answer sessions on Wednesday, March 5th.
Approximately 121 calls for service and 112 officer initiated calls were received for the month of January. Officers responded to 11 medical/fire calls. Ten arrests were made and four criminal summonses were served in the month of January.
CLAFLIN - The Claflin Fitness Center, which was established by volunteers in 2013, has added classes and is making plans for further improvements to the facility.
Legislative coffee to be held
ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood School District USD 355 will begin implementing its iPad student initiative with a partial rollout for the last quarter of the school year for 5th and 12th graders and a full roll-out from k-12 this fall.
The Clara Barton Hospital Foundation is currently seeking applicants for their 2014 healthcare career scholarships. Each year the Foundation desires to present several individuals with scholarships. Scholarship amount varies with the merits of the application and funds available from the endowments. The four scholarships to be awarded are: Jonathan Witt Scholarship, Sadie Stalcup Scholarship, Verda Lane Nursing Scholarship and Dr. Robert Moore Scholarship. Application deadline for all scholarships is April 1, 2014.
