ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood High School alum Kelsey Menges has recently earned awards as a participant on the Kansas State University forensics team.
"What is the What" by Dave Eggers. This true narrative illuminates the history of the civil war in Sudan through the eyes of Valentino Achak Deng, a refugee now living in the United States. As a boy, Deng was driven from his home, and forced to walk cross country seeking refuge. As he traveled in desperation, he faced both hostile soldiers and rebels, as well as lions, disease and starvation. Unexpectedly, he also discovered kindness and love. The story continues through his immigrant experience in the United States.
BARTON COUNTY - Elementary schools in Ellinwood and Hoisington are celebrating Red Ribbon Week which is observed across the nation to highlight the issues of substance abuse and its negative impact on schools, communities and the nation.
HOISINGTON - At its regular meeting Monday evening, the Hoisington City Council heard a presentation from Nickie Lee, Efficiency Kansas team leader. Two programs are available, Efficiency Kansas and the Weatherization Assistance Program, to provide home weatherization assistance as cost savings measures.

HOISINGTON - Superior Essex of Hoisington is announced the latest recipient of the STAR Employee Recognition Award. Kent Schremmer, scrap operator, was named the first quarter 2014 STAR Employee and will be treated to a dinner in his honor, a customized gift pack, a plaque, and STAR Employee parking privileges.
Each nine weeks Hoisington Middle School faculty and staff choose students who have shown leadership throughout the school. This can include being respectful to adults and students, improving in grades, being helpful in and out of the classroom and just showing leadership qualities.
